  • Today I profess my love for the Romulan Daeinos class. A Romulan Warbird from the Mysterious "Lost Era" whose Design in many ways Harkens back to the Original Series Era. with its clean shape and bright colours she is a marked contrast to the Dark, Forboding Warbirds of the 24th century, yet she is no less deadly...
Special thanks to Harper Steele and Bigbrain for the backgrounds.

The Daeinos is indeed quite a looker. It's a great addition to the Romulan fleet both aesthetically and doctrinally.
As for the whole Nova vs Daeinos thing, well as any good subadmiral knows; a single ship is good, a quartari of ships is better.

The Dhealan being a modern design absolutely fits it. The swap between them is a good one.
Personally, the smaller ship works very well as a stopgap towards smaller, more compact, and more importantly cheaper vessels for use in the era when the Star Empire had descended into Warlordism.

My head canon about the Dhelan class(and it's variants) is that it was a design created by D'Tans group before the Republic was established by basically raiding defunct shipyards and scrapyards for salvageable components that they basically banged together into a light ship for their fight with the Tal Shiar. When the Flotilla and then the Republic are established they gradually phase it out of service in favor of the capable designs

Given the longevity of Vulcans/Romulans the Daeinos could very well have been designed by a team consisting of the junior designers for the T'Liss and the senior designers for the Norexian. This ship definitely looks more era appropriate than the Dhealan, which rather looks like something the Romulans might have thrown together during or just after the Dominion War to cover losses (Dhealan looks too D'Deridex like in 'decoration' to postdate Norexian).
These ships probably see as much, or more, service than the Nova on the less well known borders of the Star Empire and on minor fronts, like facing off with the Kizinti or the large borders away from the Klingon and Federation borders up through the Dominion War. After all, it isn't like there aren't other powers bordering the Romulans and, given the Romulan's standard diplomatic strategies, these unknown powers probably have grudges. These are relatively modern and quite powerful ships which haven't been used up in constant patrols and skirmishes, making them great for those roles.

And as someone else mentioned here, the big weapon that was fitted on it by the republic was the plasma lotus, essentially just a extremely amped up beam array, that at least in my mind, took up alot of power, so could only be used sparingly. A thought of how to have TOS era paint jobs later on is if it was used for, say, prototypes undergoing trials and what not. Easier to see with the eye if need be, and could be a homage to early Romulan history (perhaps back to the days when they split from the Vulcans). Alternately, it's a ceremonial color scheme for Praetor's Guard ships or something in peacetime. In wartime, swap the white for the regular dark green, maybe darken the orange? So they're still distinctive, but not as obviously. Or a bit of both ideas.
As for why (if not a homage to an earlier point of their history)... perhaps that era itself is seen as the start of the Empire's resurgence and renewed growth (that hits a slight speed bump with the Dominion War, then ends with Hobus) and thus is honored even as the paint job / color scheme gets replaced with the more "traditional" greens.

My it got steamy in here has the passion cooled yet or do you still yearn for those arching pylons and curved nacelles? This is certainly one of the more successful STO designs imo, it's derivative but, different enough to be it's own design and familiar as a classic Romulan predator. We owe Probert a great deal for his work on defining what a Romulan ship should be, as soon as he whipped out his big D' everyone fell in love with it and wanted more which STO have been only too happy to indulge.
Probert never intended his D' to be green, it was meant to be steely with cool squadron markings, I think you covered this Venom so the design you chose is on point.
It's a testament to his eye as a draftsman and technical analysis that his ships look awesome and work so well in fiction from a practical standpoint, and why decades later this 3rd party design bears the shadow of his influence. I think he's also being consulted on the look of many of the new shows, I'm sure I saw his name in the credits?
The 2 cruisers in Nemesis were designed from a cool/cinematic stance rather than practical, they're massive but all their guns in that sequence pointed forward, so nothing learned from the Dominion conflict? I never really cared for them but this one works and the nacelles have line of sight which is a Roddenberry detail gradually being lost to us in recent years imo.

The two ships who come to help the Enterprise in Star Trek Nemesis, one is called The Valdore, though the other is not named. There seems to be some confusion over the name of the class, can you sort that out? The Mogai-class, the Valdore-type or Norexan-class. Which is it?
I love that flying wing design looks really cool, just maybe a little too wide.

    • @Choalith_Ikanthe
      @Choalith_Ikanthe Год назад +2

From what I've seen, the official name of the class is Mogai. They are called "Valdore-Type" by non-Romulans, who use the information and scans of the Valdore itself to represent the class in-reference. This is inconvenient in the 25th Century, as there's an actual standardized refit of the space-frame called the Valdore Class, which while similar in shape, has some clearly distinct features and composition to it.
The few places I've seen mention of Norexan appear to generally be in technical advisories and reports, mostly from before the ship's wide-spread usage. It appears that this may be a working designation for the design process, or perhaps a prototype form of the vessel, prior to its gaining status as a ship of the line.
Just my observations and speculations, though.

I've crunched the numbers and you can get away with fusing deuterium to nickel for long range (dozens of light years), fast (high warp 8, low warp 9), large (Galaxy sized) Starship. Especially if they're using bussard ram scoops while cruising and store their deuterium fuel in ultradense form, tho liquid metal would also work.
