      I've been a restorer of musical instruments for the last 20 years (I was a Shipwright before I retired) including toy ones. So I was extremely interested in what you were doing.
      I'm also restoring a toy piano but unfortunately in a much worse condition than the one your working on. Mine needs some of the tone bars replacing as they've rusted through and been lost. But I can fix it. I also need to make a new cabinet for it but (if I'm careful how I take it apart) I will use the original parts as templates. Thank you for some very useful tips.

      @@fnersch3367 depends on how much of the cabinet needs replacing or restoring but any timber like ply which is quite cheap or a soft wood such as pine, or a harder wood such as beech. Most can be got from a local timber merchant or if your into recycling, then old wood from the local tip should do. Make sure to avoid mdf and chipboard. If any tone bars are missing, you will have to replace them with new ones but getting them to the right pitch might be a problem but there are articles about that on RUclips to help. Steel brass, or Iron. you should be able to get from a hardware store or metal dealer (loads on ebay}

    According to color matching it is reccomanded to stain the wood before the varnish. Stained varnish is better used if you want a quick job on a surface not coloured. Better to use some aniline stain (water or alcohol based) on the new parts of wood. Color must be matched with wet surfaces (use some diluent on older parts) to get a rasonable approximation of final result when applied trasparent varnish. If you use filler they are better slightly darker than background than lighter coloured, if you have doubt of being able to match darker blends better

    Hello. I might sound like too late (but I just stumbled upon your video). First, let me tell how I was so moved by this attempt to restore "memories", since I can't think of a better way to mend the wounds time inflicts upon everything. Such a gentle and humble initiative ! Congrats. Now, for the technical parts, I might give you some ideas. I'm what we call in french an "ébéniste", that is "cabinet maker", more or less, and I had to perform some tricky restorations, on very old furnitures. These are sometimes very difficult problems because you can't ever get the same color between a new piece and an oxydised wood (because of UV, wheather etc…). However, there are some techniques to "mitigate" the discrepancies. For instance, one of them consist in avoiding colored varnish (at least in the beginning), and try to match color with several light coats of stain (in your case, I would try and use something we call "brou de noix", a kind of hazelnut decoction, water based, and non-toxic. Then, once you have achieved a more or less uniform color, apply some shellac to stabilize what you have reached. Be aware that all water-based solution will raise the grain of the wood, you might want to lightly sand (and carefully vacuum !) between coats. After that, you can use various brown crayons or markers, to do some localized touches, and only then harmonize everything with a lightly colored wax for example. Other than that, the only recipe, is patience, patience and patience ! But I can see you have plenty ;-) Have a look at Thomas Johnson's videos, if you don't know his work. It's a wonderful source of inspiration : ruclips.net/channel/UCd8v3SbzGP9_wuSOr_xk_eA. Take care, and keep the good work. Thank you very much for these very nice 30 minutes of delicate work.

    I think I would have got some other wood, the same thickness, and taken the piano apart. Then trace around the existing pieces on to the new wood, and remake it that way. You have a lot more patience than I have, and your way is probably saving more of the original instrument.

    • @theymaker125
      @theymaker125  4 года назад +7

      Thanks! Since this is a restoration work, so i can't replace just everything, that would be called as remake and lost all the histories.. but of course you could do so to make the piano more durable and nicer the way you wanted to.. Sweet babies, you redid plies in plywood by hand?! That's a level of dedication I didn't think as possible.
    My only suggestions for the varnishing (as a novice who loves watching woodworking videos) would be
    1. Try starting with a darker wood, so you don't have to apply as much varnish, or
    2. Use a darker stain on the light wood so it catches up to the rest of the color faster. For example, if the body of the piece you're trying to match is medium-brown, try using a light coat of dark brown on the light wood so that the light wood & dark color mix to a medium-brown color. Then add the same varnish as the rest of the piece so that it has the same overall look.
    Again, I have no experience with woodworking, but I have some idea of color theory. Hope it helps!

      @theymaker125  4 года назад +2

      I was having a deep dilemma on the plywood restoration as well. Since my friend requested to keep everything as much as possible, so ya, that's the way I could thought of. Some years ago, there was a piano factory in our town, and they made just the same toy pianos) I remember them from my childhood)

      *Lots of things are well done, but the varnishing job is lousy. I wonder why did you not sand all the wood? You could at least have dyed first the foil and after that the varnish instead of putting layers and layers of varnish on it. Sorry, but it was a waste of time to watch this video.*

    I didn’t know toy piano test has to be done in a rainforest. Good to learn new skills.
