Watching y’all is a great reminder of what it was like the first time I read through every one of these cosmere books. Something about that enthusiasm once you get hooked hits different
They're going to be kicking themselves when they finish the book and realize how close they flew to the sun this episode, only to suddenly swerve into an extended joke and never return to that particular topic.
Rip, missed the stream yet again :( Clarus, in Germany, there is a training you can do to become a more secure driver. Involves sliding across slippery surfaces, etc, in a controlled environment while wearing a headset (and driving your own car). You can even get discounted car insurance rates with it. Perhaps something like that exists in Canada as well? Oh, just because ppl usually find those funny: the German word is "Fahrsicherheitstraining" ;) I didn't know about Sanderson fighting his editor, but I do find some of the "modern" terms he uses jarring. Then again, there are probably plenty of other "modern" words that I just don't recognize as such. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next live stream. PS: In German, "Elend" means "misery" :P
2:42:19 A Hat trick isn't just a hockey term. It's also used in football and in fact, the word was originally first used in cricket. Ironically, Brandon actually doesn't like the "homicidal hat trick" line, as he feels it is out of character and it doesn't make sense in-world.
I love your insights on the books but the fact, in the same episode, you criticize a fantasy world character for not calling out abuses against universal human rights AND criticize a Supreme Court for PROTECTING universal human rights irl is wild. A lot of the creatures in this book open interesting discussion on moral issues like bodily autonomy (spikes for control) and the role of intelligence for ethical dignity (Skaa and Koloss modified to be less intelligent) you don’t need to distract with double standards toward the real world to have a good discussion.
People with ideological differences than you give you the benefit of the doubt that you mean well for holding your opinions, surely it is conducive to a better world to offer others the same.
2:45:32 The reason why there is no sports in fantasy novels is because they are written by nerds. As we all know, nerds typically don’t don’t care about sports
2:45:30. Regarding no sports in fantasy, I can think of to series with it, there is Harry Potter and the Riftwar Saga (Raymond E. Fiest) (which has a version of soccer [called barrel ball]). Oh! And Wheel of time did have horse racing...
1:40:44 It is written as Aluminium. there is an I after the N. Bruh. Also, having the ium suffix makes way more sense and brings it line with most other elements, i.e, Sodium, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium etc.
I really enjoyed this episode of bookclub. It's pretty clear that the "mist taken" joke was not considered a spoiler by N&C. We do not need to be deleting things like this. It has been happening often. Please do not unilaterally try to decide the reading order behind closed doors. This mod team is killing me. It is getting bananas. Have some difficult conversations about what the hell you're doing. I enjoyed this episode a lot. (Compliment sandwiching this bish.)
@@ClarusPolaris Internally, it's getting painful and cliquey. I think there is a point where that needs reevaluating. I dunno. I liked the show. As you get more examples of what "extreme caution" deletes, it could be worth consideration. I do not see a particularly healthy dynamic.
Now I am not saying Rashek was a good guy before he became the lord ruler (after all Kwaan sent him to kill Alendi if need be), but he did his best as far as he was concerned. He understood the power of the Well and what he did right/wrong with it. He couldn't trust someone else to do better than him in one try, so he must have believed he needed a second chance at it. He ensured this by copying what Alendi was doing, i.e., war, genocide, and oppression, until the next time the Well was restored. If he were a better man then he might have had a better plan, but remember that he was just an angry teenager/young adult given the power of infinity to singlehandedly fix a world. There are also other magical reasons for what he did/the way he did but that's a spoiler.
Don't do Elantris next. Do pretty much anything else and swing back to Elantris after you're a bit deeper in. There's really nothing in it that is super important to the Cosmere at this point and it's by far one of the weakest books Sanderson has written. My recommendation would be either to do Warbreaker, or to just jump into The Stormlight Archives and intersperse that with Warbreaker and the other standalones.
Yeah, the decision has been made, but it's definitely one of his weaker books. I wonder how things would have turned out if he got to write it now with a clean slate and with all the experience gained from his other works.
Is it just me or does "Spook" give an Anikin Skywalker vibe? I am doing the audiobook, so maybe I get this from Kramers choice of the voice for him. But right now I am so fearful that he will brtray everyone...I have had this feeling since book 2.
Thank you for calling out the apology for TLR...there is nothing that can excuse the purposeful creation of a slave based economy/world oh poor Rashek doing the best he can
I agree that they're naive / ignorant about some things (as are we all), but that doesn't mean that they have no right to speak about them. If that were the case, we wouldn't be able to have discourse with anyone (except perhaps someone with an exactly identical world view).

1:11:11 that's not exactly how any of that works but sure.
3:08:00 Regarding Vin and Elond leaving the party, I totally got a "Truman Show" exit vibe from this.
I always thought that Sp...er..Lester wasn't so much creepy as just on the spectrum and his interpersonal skills were very non-standard.
I always thought the lance thing being a symble of Kelsier strange...he got killed by the backhand
If Elantris is next that's exciting as I haven't read any of it either.
"I am unfortunately the Hero of Ages" was the absolute dead giveaway without the audio. Thats EXACTLY how Sazed talks.

There is zero justification for the slavery and BS looks bad for any attempt at apologizing for TLR

Please, please, please stay away from politics and religion. You are at best ignorant of too many facts to talk about it. And it's a BOOK review.
Ah yes. Because BOOKs never have anything to do with politics or religion.

@Xeddicus427 Said about books that literally center around a war for political powers and central character's journey for religious truth. Genius.
