  • Cream - Toad live at Royal Albert Hall, London.
    November 26th, 1968
    10 of 11
    "Farewell Concert" is the live recording of the Cream's final concert at the Royal Albert Hall on November 26th, 1968.
    Directed by Tony Palmer, the film incorporates pieces of six performances with narration by BBC announcer Patrick Allen, along with interviews with the band members themselves, showcasing their playing abilities.
    The film has often been criticized for both its mediocre sound and visual effects.
    In 2005, a special extended edition of the concert appeared featuring full versions of all songs separated from the narration and interviews. The new version featured digitally remastered sound and video including three bonus songs.

    'A really good band with a bad drummer is not a good band. A really bad band with a good drummer sounds better.' - Ginger Baker.

      Actually this is true.... Since a band follows a time signature and the drummer (mainly) is in charge of keeping that time signature, they can essentially make or through the entire performance. Drummers are also responsible for controlling the amount of energy being released, both by the band and the audience.

      You talking about the Strange Brew Movie. There's a lot of good stuff in that movie. One of them is the one your talking about but Ginger says it a little bit different.
      Ginger: A band is as good as it's drummer, a mediocre band with a mediocre drummer is mediocre. A mediocre band with a good drummer, becomes a good band. A really good band with a really good drummer, becomes a superband.
      And right after that I love what Alex Van Halen says what he learned from Ginger is that drums are a musical instrument. There's more then just the hits, there's nuances, there's dynamics an so forth.
      And like Ginger says in the movie: You can practice forever an get the most amazing technique an say nothing with it at all. It's a gift that some people have, and we three had it in abundance.

      I am a piano player and Ginger makes me want to play the drums. Funny enough I play along to his as rhythm track... I do recommend using Ginger as a metronome when practicing it's a hell of a lot more interesting than tick tock..... his time is as smooth as the burning cigarette in his mouth while he's soloing.

    Baker just naturally loves drumming, the more licks he can hit, the better - he is always in a blissful state when he's playing -
    But apart from being ultra-coordinated he really understood the mechanics of polyrhythmic drumming time-signatures

      Jonah Martinez Tuning is definitely part of it - most half-decent drummers of the day would tune their kit jazz-style (super high) and not cover it with tape and blankets. It also has something to do with mics, but that's not my area of expertise.

    • @jonahmartinez4298
      @jonahmartinez4298 6 лет назад +1

      I got it! Consider his shells. 3 ply mahogany Ludwig’s with wide bearing edges. This gives then that fat, round, and warm sound. Also consider he did not dampen his drums. He used coated ambassador heads all around, tuned high. Nothing inside the bass drums- maybe a felt strip touching the head of the 22”, but the 20” was wide open. Lastly, the room surely had a part in the huge sound.

    • @arminiushermann09
      @arminiushermann09 6 лет назад +1

      spudfriley Yep, and that's because he was so diverse an got the most out of his drums. His timing, improv skills an four limb Independence is indeed, amazing, an the fact he plays beats on every last piece of his drum kit, he never wasted a single piece. Most drummers just use technique an stick to only a few pieces of their kit an make it look like their doing more than they really are. Not Ginger, as an article said on this number: Baker often produced complementary rhythms on the hi-hat, ride cymbal, double bass and tom-toms simultaneously. It features sustained, imaginative drumming that would knock out a Carnegie jazz audience.

      It’s a combination of sheer hard work and practice with his god given ability of “natural time” as Ginger calls it himself. I understand this as a higher level of timing and coordination that is rare to find, allowing him to manage multiple time signatures and rhythms simultaneously and instinctively knowing where he is in rhythmic progressions without always having to consciously count beats and bars.

    Yeah, the drums sound incredible. And you have to remember this was back before the drum companies were making different, weird sizes ; they were standard sizes and there weren't many options for drum heads or mikes, either. Basically, 'off the shelf' equipment .... and listen to them! I always though Ginger had a very unique sound to his small tom toms. As many time as I heard him live, they always sounded the exactaly same.
    But the best trick in this solo was how he changed shirts between 8:00 - 8:15 and back again by 8:30 without stopping , LOL :)

      socialdtjo76 Nope Ginger is at least billion light years ahead of Bonham. Bonham still hasn't figured out light speed yet. Bonham just uses his technique to go through the motions, which is so boring to listen too. Ginger has four limb Independence an improvises like no other. He plays Jazz with an African beat over the top. And with Toad here he often complements rhythms on the hi-hat, ride cymbal, double bass and tom-toms simultaneously. Something Bonham can't do, just like the way he can't use snycopations an polyrhythms the way Ginger does. And I don't remember Zeppelin especially Bonham having to improvise their songs for 10 min an more on every live song let alone never playing any song the same way twice.

    What about his brain, it has to have break neck thought, the dexterity to connect and have the reflex's to execute, know when to drop the bomb and never over play and share musician ship also! Ginger is the MACHINE, the VITAL time keeper of this group along with MR. Jack Bruce and Eric is the butter, CREAM and the jam! and they are all in the groove" it's all about the groove. Ginger reminds me of Elvin Jones just more powerful and precise! BAR NONE! the drummers drummer along with Keith Moon - Mitch Mitchell - Neil Pert - Charlie Watts = octopus Damon Che of Don Caballero - Jerry Fuchs of Maserati = look em up and go too school and study

    It's obvious that they had at least three cameras on Ginger. I wish that they'd go back and dump all the super close tight shots, and actually show him playing the drum set. The artsy 1960s messing with the focus is tiring, and gets in the way of actually seeing Ginger's playing style. Whoever still has those reels of film, please go back and re-edit them in a more viewable fashion.

    @claptonbrucebaker Not to mention I'm not sure anybody except maybe Buddy Rich, some of the other other jazz greats could play with sustained energy like this for ten minutes. This solo has no relaxation period in it, it is continuously physically demanding and rhythmically complex.. Going even five minutes playing stuff like this is physically demanding. Ginger is the perfect fusion of a jazz and a rock drummer. even crazier is that he plays both styles with his limbs at once

    R.I.P. - No other rock drummer came even close. (John Bonham? Please! Bonham was considered "great" by those people who's older brothers were just a wee bit too young to have purchased Cream records, and thus were unwise to overrated Bonham's 2nd rate cribbing of Baker's powerhouse style -- hear Baker's "Toad" with Cream to confirm this).

    • @CrimsonKarl

      Bonzo had his own talents that were different than Baker's. He had a very unique thing he did with his right foot and will be judged mostly on his studio musical output in the Zeppelin catalog, which is truly great. But as a soloist, he just wasn't that good. That Moby Dick solo is long and meandering. It's not easy to hold an audience's attention with a drum solo, and Baker was truly the king of the rock drum solo. Actually, he invented it.

    I find it insane that these guys were all still under 30, Clapton was only like 23! That’s crazy they made music like this at that young of an age?! It’s funny how people say young people don’t appreciate music like this these days... but these musicians were even younger lol!
