Such AWESOMENESS! Great info for a newbie who has yet to make a piece of bezel jewelry!! Thx so much for doing this for us!!! 💝💪🏾👏🏾🥳
I've spent more time and money on arts and crafts and time preparing. But I think I am close to doing something
Not all heroes wear capes.
Thanks!
Think the cling wrap would melt on deeper pours?
I doubt it, it gets hot.. but I don't think it gets near hot enough for that.
You can put cling wrap in the oven, so as long as it doesn't get over 350-400 degrees Fahrenheit, it should be fine.
When you used both the wax and the mold release on the shiny tapes , which did you apply first the wax or the release ?
Wax and then release.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo Thank you very much .
Wonder if furniture polish would work
It might, they tend to have a big variety of stuff added though.
What an awesome experiment I didn't have the patience to do myself. Thank you for doing it! I volunteer in a woodshop and we have folks (including myself) that use epoxy, so this is a total gem of a post. Thanks again.
Ah perfect, glad it was helpful!
I've never wanted to wax something as badly as I do now.
I don't know what to say to that.
this video was exactly what I was wondering about today. I am going to to a English walnut river coffee table so I was wondering what I could cover my form with so my mom doesn't have to take me to home depot since I am only 14.
That's awesome man! Glad I published it today. And super kudos to you, best of luck on your river table! Feel free to message me if you have any questions, would love to see it when you're done.
Thank you for doing all of the experiments so we don't have to! This was very helpful!
You are so welcome! Just tryin' be helpful :)
Now I'm ready to use a plastic PVC sheet as the bottom of a mold. Do you have any experience with this? Will it stick to Pvc?
Great question.. I doubt it. Just do a small test first
Thanks for this !! I bought mosaic marble hexagon tile to create a safe floor for my bearded dragon enclosure and I was brainstorming ideas to do a safe easy border to fill the edges . Cutting marble this small is not easy .. so I thought some kind of resin would be perfect. So I’m going to be using clear cast mixed with some dye. Does the epoxy gas off fairly quickly ?
Does the sticky side of tape release from epoxy? I need to seal the back side of a seam I’m filling in the crook of a tree (cutting board).
Depends on the tape... often it will.
Man this was great. I was looking forward to the blue one somewhat winning the race at the last pull... Oh please oh please....No' you stuck to the painters tape.🤣👍 Good information I don't have to go and buy more stuff. Gorilla tape it is...😎😁
Oh I just gotta find out what is a way to make the mold🙄
Clear packing tape works well too! Melamine is a solid mold material. I've also used marker board for a cheaper option, but it's not as thick
I am pouring into a big crack in a parota table, the crack goes to the end of the table, should I tape the ends with packing tape?
Something.. for sure. In my experience tape doesn't onto the ends very well. I either screw a board (covered in tape) onto the end to make a wall and caulk it... or if the gap is small enough, fill the end of the crack with silicone caulk and then cut the end off once it's done.
So it looks like just wax work well. Only issue is the seams. I wonder if the wax works over hot glue?
Probably, just make sure to add plenty
I get glass cut to fit my molds. It's smooth, tape is too porus and gives me too.much.probles
That’s a solid approach
Question... when you are using the tape for epoxy, it's usually the sticky part that is against the epoxy. It looks like, in your vid, that it's the outside of the tape that you are using for the experiment, instead of the sticky part.
Just depends on the application. If you're lining a form.. it'll be the not sticky part. If you're slapping it on the underside of a board over a knothole, it'll be sticky.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo Ahhhh, ok, I gotcha. Thanks =D
what do you use to keep epoxy from leaking under a bezel?
Form it up
duuude amaaaazing video. Great effort and love the follow through thanks so much, I'm going to make some next level because of this.
Do it man! Thanks for the feedback :)
Some interesting findings. I've used blue tape quite a bit for gap filling with epoxy and I've not really had an issue.
That makes sense. The adhesive layer seemed like a block. So for gap filling the epoxy was probably against the sticky side, not the paper. Oh damn.. I think I’ve got another test to do.
We all forget sometimes that a voice over is helpful and a respirator should of been used been there bro
Truth brother
Enjoyed the test and comparison. Having the resin release from molds is such a critical thing when making things with silicone. I belong to a group where we share information about epoxy projects and uses. One of the topics we discuss occasionally is mold release vs. no mold release and methods for ensuring epoxy doesn't stick to whatever we are using as a mold. This video is on point for that discussion.
I do want to ask - this video is 3 years old has anything occurred in your epoxy work that you would question your original conclusions or have something more to elaborate on?
Wow at how easy they came off all the gorilla tape
Right?! Blew me away, totally unexpected.
Do you think I could just apply wax to plexiglass?
THat'd probably work.
So what is the winning tape I’m not gonna watch the whole thing?
If you're not skipping to the end, then I'm not going to do it and type it out for you
Did you add any wax or spray on the Clint wrap or wax paper?
I didnt
I would like to epoxy this bowl: ruclips.net/video/_NjDxBsMk5M/видео.htmlsi=c88TB2BIZuL7l80P
If I could wrap the inner and outer surfaces of the bowl with something like tuck tape, turn the bowl on its side, and have a little opening in the tuck tape to pour in epoxy I was wondering if you know of product that can release from dried epoxy on that side's adhesive side.
Have you tried and experimented with transfer tape. I did a experiment with packing tape and it left the epoxy sticky on the bottom. I just recently did another experiment with transfer tape and because the transfer tape is similar to the adhesive on packing tape once the epoxy became in contact with the transfer tape and the epoxy cured it left marks on the bottom of the piece I did and the transfer tape started to crumble a little bit because the epoxy got hot.
I haven’t, that’s interesting
@@YouCanMakeThisToo this is the transfer tape I used, www.brilliantvinyl.com/Clear-Medium-Tack-Transfer-Tape-with-Release-Liner-and-Blue-Grid-Lines-12-x-150-Feet.html
Very cool experimenting - definitely going to keep this in mind for future projects!
Please do!
Thank you so interesting to watch
Thanks for watching!
Thank u! I needed to create a bezel for my radio
Glad it helped!
Hello there I am wanting to make top covers for my bedside tables. Basically like a oversized placemat. I have made some frames the size I want out of pine I was thinking about cauking a silicone base to it to create my base and cauking it afterwards on the inside too to create a nice seam all around. But then before all that should I be covering the pine in something first ? Clingwrap parchment paper ? Before I go ahead and fix the basee silicone to the frame ? Hopefully I have explained this enough for you to possibly be able to advice. In a nutshell. I have created a pine frame out if sawn pine woof and screwed together. I was thinking maybe I should cover frame in clingwrap or parchment paper then using some caulking to stick my base to the frame and seal om the inside too. I have ordered a thick silicone mate the type we use to bake on so about 4mm size I require. So I was thinking should I be covering rhe pine in Clingwrap or parchment then affixing the base ak my silicone mat with caulking then sealing it inside to create nice seams . I just want to be able to demould with ease. This is my first major job and it's for my bedside tables so I would like nice clean results I just couldn't afford ti pay put £100 or more a custom mould for my job. Hopefully you understand what I am trying to do and maybe able to help . Thank you
How can I make epoxy stick to a chrome motorcycle gas cap? I want to put my dog tags on my gas cap and encase/encapsulate it in epoxy.
Thank you for this video. meant a lot.
Glad it was helpful
you should try the aluminum foil tape, the stuff used for HVAC duct-work!!!
Very nice experiment video Caleb
Thank you 🤗
Thanks for all the experimenting and sharing it. Was wondering if the wax can be used in a silicone mold to pop the epoxy out after it cures or would the silicone release spray be better for that?
Both work well
Great video. 😊 Thanks 👍🏽😲
Thanks!
Very informative, thank you!
Thanks for watching
im glad you have the same name as my high school woodshop teacher. both of you know what you’re talking about and are very creative.
What a coincidence, that's awesome!
I’m only a minute in but thanks for making this. I’ve been racking my brain trying to determine how to build a quality mold for a project I want to make.
Thanks for watching! Hope the rest of the video was helpful. There's lots of ways to go about it.
Is gorilla tape 'gaffa' tape (uK)?
I don't know, I get the sense they're pretty similar though from what I've heard
great video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
thanks for this . i added this to my favs so i can refer back to it from time to time .
Wonderful!
So this is the proof I was needing for my lawsuit. "ClingWrap" wont stick to anything!!!!
It sure doesn't anymore
Thanks a ton I'm just getting into Epoxy and was wondering what tape alternatives I could potentially use and this helped a lot.
Glad I could help
This was top notch stuff my dude! Very thorough, very helpful for a newbie. Thanks!
Thanks!
This video is great. my application is a little different. I want to seal a through-hole with epoxy or potting compound without having to sand the epoxy down. So I was thinking about applying tape on one side and filling with epoxy from the other side? Do you think the adhesive side of these tapes would stick to the epoxy?
Your best bet for that will be get a scrap of wood and coat it with tape. Then place tape down against the show side of your and hot glue the heck out of that block to your piece to seal it off and hold it tight. Then pour in from the other side. The adhesive on tape tends to act as a barrier so epoxy seldom really sticks to it.. but it tends to droop and the epoxy seems to work it’s way through the adhesive and leak.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it!
this was very helpful for just getting into this, thank you so much for the information
Glad it was helpful!
Any thoughts on aluminum tape?
Should work fine
Good to know, Thank you!
You bet!
i did a mold with wax paper and it released okay, but the sides were foggy... how do i get the epoxy resin to be clear and transluscent on all sides?
It probably absorbed a bit of wax, you may be to wash it off. Otherwise you'll need to sand and polish it.
I think that was the most accurate use of the word DUDE since the 80s, damn dingle berries.
🤣🤣🤣 thanks man
Thanks for the info!
You bet!
Will beeswax work the same or should it be some kind of automotive wax? Sorry still new at this.
It’d probably work the same. Just do a small test first
Really great info…
Glad you think so!
So can you release resin from resin?? great video I learned something today👍👍
You'd have to use wax or something in-between
Thank you! Was trying to figure out how to reuse silicone coaster edge mold I made!
Glad I could help!
So it seemed like, of the tapes, the Gorilla did about the best? But the packing tape did well enough on it's own to win in terms of value, since it's much cheaper than all of the tapes?
I wouldn’t say gorilla was the best, but it was the most surprising. I think what helped the gorilla release was the texture.. harder for a vapor lock. But that’ll also leave a texture. For me the take away was almost anything works if you wax it enough
Great content!!do you think i could use just plywood 40in×40in with the clear tape because in a different country with limited supplys?thank you got a new subscriber here:)
Yes, absolutely
Miss your project videos, so I thought I would watch some old ones.
Thanks for the in-depth testing, I bought some epoxy and will be trying a pour!
Good luck on the build 😁
Thanks! I'm actually about to start editing project, and I think I'm going back to more of the older style.. with voice over and less face talking.
I’ve been using blue tape as a dam but with the sticky side up. It’s been working, but I want to do a pour of about 1”, which I haven’t tried yet. Have you tried a dam using the sticky side up? Also, have you tried metal tape?
I've done sticky side on when I'm just patching knot holes and stuff. The problem is the epoxy sometimes wicks between the adhesive and will start leaking.. but that's only when tape is all I use.
Metal tape will work as well.
A summary, possibly in the form of a written table, at the end would help a lot... Congrats anyway...
If you want to aggregate the information I shared in the video into a graph I’d be happy to put a link to it in the description. (Videos can’t be changed after they’re posted).
Great video, thanks! What you said about the Thickset was a little confusing. Were you saying that Thickset is more viscous than 2:1 or less viscous? I would think the one with "Thick" in the name would be thicker
Thickset is less viscous. The "thick" is because it can be used in a thicker (deeper) pour, not because the fluid is thicker.
I bet freezer paper would work. Acrylic paint peels right off.
Probably would!
Thanks. I'm just starting to use resin and my first mold is made but the pour is ahead of me. Looks like I'm adding packing tape and wax.
It can save a lot of tears later
Thanks kid ,you help out a old carpenter guy that was wondering about a few things before i do my big river pour ,
Glad I could help!
I recently came across uhmw tape (polyethylene tape) I think that would by far outperform the tapes you tried.
Oh, I bet it would.
Great little tips video. Love getting tips and tricks hints from other woodworkes. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Thank you a very helpful video . best part you showed us how we can use what we already have and no special types of tapes etc needs to be used if you have silicone spray or wax. Very informative
Glad it was helpful!
THANKS for this!!! ♥ I was looking everywhere for a good tape test for resin :)
Glad I had it for you!
thank you for this it has helped me alot ...i love the texture some methods gave to
Thanks for watching!
Blue tape works great when the epoxy is on the adhesive side.
Yep, otherwise it soaks into the paper side and is not fun to remove.
at 1:20, is that an epoxy saw blade cover on the right?
Great video, thanks. Curious about something you didnt touch on - i need to build up a mold because my inserts are about 2mm over the lip of the silicon. I've seen people use tape (like 3M 3350 flex duct tape) but it would seem they have the sticky side IN, so that it circles the mold, sticks up, and sticks to itself. Is that possible. Or did they do sticky side out and i just didnt figure that out?
Also, does the silicon mold release or wax discolor the resin in any way?
I haven't had any issues with resin discoloration.
Either way would probably work.. in my experience the adhesive on tape doesn't really bond to the epoxy, it's more about whether the material is nonporous and a good barrier.
Thank you so much! This is awesome information! Very cool and great resourceful information to help us with our epoxy work. Great video. Thank you for posting!
Glad you found it helpful!
Good to know you don't have to buy expensive tapes. Just a little wax/release and cheaper tape work great. Thanks for sharing. Until next time. *Chris*
Yep! And unless you have a bunch of scrap plywood that’s otherwise useless... it’s even cheaper to just buy marker board or hardboard and wax it. And not even worry about tape. For small stuff at least.
Thank you
You're welcome
Almost wasted $70 bucks on Tyvek tape
Just about anything works
I was about to do the same sort of testing, but to see which tape has the least meniscus effect at the edges. It is a lot of work sanding/filing off sharp edges due to the meniscus of epoxy against the dam, so if there is some tape where epoxy would "bead" and not stick at all, that would be ideal. Looks like Gorilla duct tape may be the one?
Your best bet to eliminate that is instead of tape, use marker board (smooth melamine coating) and put paste wax on it.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo How about making dams out of strips/blocks of parafin or beeswax? Anyone tried that?
Very interesting! As a beginner this was good imfo.
Glad it was helpful!
Just found your channel exactly what I was looking for you got a new subscriber here buddy thanks for the video
Thanks, glad to hear it!
Have you thought of something to do with the bits of resin left over? They look like bits of stained glass to me.
From this test? No, I already scrapped them. But when I have extra I have little silicone cups I pour them in to use them as stand offs.
I was curious to know if the finishes clarity was altered from the releasing components
Not that I've noticed.
Old video but its just what I needed! Good one.
Glad you found it!
What are materials epoxy doesn’t stick?
Wax for sure, melamine most the time
Do you know of tapes that could cause an adverse chemical reaction in the resin? I used a double stick to hold down embedded object. Tape failed (of course), resin turned cloudy grey. Process of elimination to find out what went wrong, re: the cloudiness.
I haven't heard of that.. I'd say greater chance that the resin wasn't mixed well enough, the temperature was too low, or it reacted with what you were casting
@@YouCanMakeThisToo Thanks for responding; I suspect A,B.and C,--all of the above.
In terms of clarity what one kept the epoxy as glass like on top as what it set on? For example the resin molds keep the resin looking clear on all sides that touch the mold. What product seems to do the same here?
Best way to do that is a smooth surface mold that's just waxed or silicone spray.
Thank you for sharing this... It was so helpful ☺️
Glad it was helpful!
This is great info. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Cool thanks for your thoughtful testing!
Thanks!
Exactly what I needed to know, thank you.
So glad!
What did you spray on the tape before you started adding?
Silicone release spray, should be a link in the description
Been searching for a way to put some epoxy between two pieces of wood on a wall. And because of this vid i know i can make it work with the packing tape !! Thanks a lot for this video.
So after this test, does this change how you make you epoxy projects? What would you use? Just melamine coated in wax?
I think so! Or hardboard coated with wax. The melamine releases a little better, but it tends to chip out at the edges.. so it's really important to covert hat bit.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo nice. u could try HDPE too. expensive, but its solid plastic.
Packing tape and cling wrap for the win
Heck yeah!
This was interesting to watch! And kinda satisfying
Right?! Peeling epoxy is pretty satisfying :)
Thank you for this! Helped a lot!
Glad it helped!
