  • Simple mall scale tractor logging dying Douglas fir trees on my off grid property . Logging with a Farmi 501 tractor winch on a Massey Ferguson MF 30 MF 34. These logs will be taken to my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. Then mild into lumber to build a small off grid cabin.

    Great content as usual! Maybe Bring an Axe next time? lol Good idea to not talk about politics, all it accomplishes is strangers insulting each other on social media. Salvage work isn't boring to me, I do it all the time on the family Farm. I like how you show the whole process from selection, cutting, yarding, and the mill.

    Politics: From the Greek -- "Poly", meaning many and "Ticks" meaning malicious bloodsuckers.
    Therefore, "Politics" = Many little voracious/malicious bloodsuckers.
    Here endeth the lesson.
    When you get all the lumber from the standing, dead trees, the size of the off-grid cabin will be upwards of 3,500 ft.sq. ! With wrap-around decks...
    Enjoying the content, another likeroo.
    Cheers from a (sub-arctic) Linn County.

      I think I would actually rather deal with many ticks than politics. I usually feel them crawling on me before they bite and when I do they are a problem that is easy to solve.
      I keep thinking the same thing. My building material supply is going to soon exceeded my building.

    I like the pallet fork setup. Looks to be home grown. Forks are long enough to get the job done but not so long as to get in the way. I suspect that was the idea. And or the longest bars on hand. Either way, like em. On the lookout for an old 2wd front end loader myself. Lot of fords out there but the owners are right proud of them.

    That tractor winch set up you use is really simple, but very effective. Your old tractor is a good match for the winch, and having a differential lock makes it a lot more useful. Vintage is best !

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  8 месяцев назад +3

      Not only simple and effective, the winch has lasted over 30 years without hardly having to do anything to it. I’ve had to do very little to the tractor too, other than routine maintenance.

    Someone made a remark about Tim wearing sunshades cutting a tree. His safety glasses actually darken in sunlight. I've used a peevey/cant hook for a lot of things. I believe you just came up with a new use! 👏 Have to edit my comment, i just saw a new use for the point on the tape! You have all kinds of new uses for standard equipment!

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  8 месяцев назад +2

      I find these sun shades don’t fog up like a lot of safety glasses do for some reason. Just don’t tell OSHA I am using them.
      Oh yes all kinds of standard equipment has all kinds of uses. My charcoal grill often gets put on the same table I often file my chainsaw on. I just now realized how amusing it might be if someone saw how often I use chainsaw tools when I am grilling.

    Lots of work for one tree with that old tractor, but she’s a workhorse, how long is the winch cable? I use my CTL with grapple attachment to harvest trees, it can go places I can’t even walk on, and the logs stay clean as I pick them up where they fell. As for politics I usually drop trees where I’d like some politicians to be standing that way I never miss the mark 😂

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  8 месяцев назад +1

      It is 165 feet. I have another one I can put on it that is 220 feet if I really want to reach out. It performs better with the shorter one. I will have to try that politician visualization trick when I am falling trees. I am guessing it will increase my accuracy. 😁

      I have used a branch many times to drive wedges. The problem is I cleaned up that spot a few years ago. I cleaned it up so well, there were no branches to be found.
      After looking for one I decided to go get the peavey before I got peeved..

    YOU MIGHT LOOK INTO A GOOD SET OF TIRE CHAINS WE USED THEM FOR YEARS

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  8 месяцев назад

      It’s a good suggestion for a lot of cases. It is so rare that I need more traction that I really haven’t felt the need to do anything for more traction. My concern with chains is, they would stir up the soil on the roads, then when it rains again they would really get slick. One of the reasons I quit driving the tractor on them in general after it gets muddy. When it’s wet and muddy I don’t want to be logging anyway.

      I haven’t used one so I can’t say for sure. But I can picture how one could be helpful. One question I would ask is how easy is it to remove from the line when you don’t need it when it might be in the way. Some people swear by using a car hood to pull the log up onto and drag it on. I have seen videos of that. With a car hood I definitely wouldn’t want to be packing one around.
