Years ago, Cooks Illustrated Magazine recommended taking a quart spray bottle, add 1 cup vinegar, fill with water. I spray my vegetables and fruit with this mixture, let them sit a few minutes, and rinse. So you use a mixture if one part vinegar to three parts water. I found that my cauliflower doesn’t get black spots.
I single layer all of my fruit between paper towels. I also layer them according to ripeness. The better ones on the bottom layer and the ones that need to be eaten pronto on the top. No cover. Just paper towels. Lasts at least a week. Also after inspecting the packages for the best ones I weigh them and choose the heaviest ones. Yes this adds time to your shopping trips but I feel it is worth it.🍓🍒.
I put a folded paper towel on the top of the berry container that they come in after rinsing. Then I flip the container and store in the fridge upside down. This lets me see how much berry juice is leaking every time I open the container. It makes it easy to exchange for a fresh paper towel too.
Another way to preserve strawberries (I haven't tried other berries but I have to think this will work for any variety) is to immediately take them out of the container and put them into a mason jar or other glass container with an airtight lid. Put the lid on and put it in the fridge until you want to use them. At that point, use the vinegar/water solution to wash them first. I can attest that it works for at least 2 weeks.
This is a GENIUS HACK!! I use white vinegar all the time in the laundry/ for cleaning to kill mould etc. but NEVER thought to use it on berries like this. Thanks, Lisa! :)
I have thrown away way too much because my fruit has molded so quickly or rather I didn't use them fast enough. So, I am truly grateful for this hack. I can hit the fruit market this weekend and get all that I want and need and not worry about my fruit/veggies expiring in couple of days. AWESOME vid! Very helpful and informative. Thank you so much. Arlene
Seems like some ppl say using an air tight container is best while others say you shouldn’t seal the moisture in. I would think the holes in the container they come in are there for a reason…Who’s right? 🤔
Wow, this is a great tip. I usually buy my berries in small batches I know I am going to use right away or frozen berries. Mainly because I find berries difficult to keep even a few days. This is great to know.
Well this might be a "hack" for your generation but I have been using white vinegar wash to keep mold off raspberries since my mother taught me to do in in about 1949. 😀 Your plan to do strawberries first and raspberries last is good -- I do that too and yes store then in a clean disinfected container. Also if you want to use the original plastic clamshell container you can disinfect the raspberries inside the container then rinse and let it dry off on a paper towel!
I was thinking the same with the clamshell. It would be best to dip it in the vinegar water also so the bacteria left in the container cant start any mold. Personally I rise all my berries under gentle tap water in a strainer with no vinegar and put them in a zip lock bag. It wont last as long as the vinegar method but I find less air by using the zip lock for storage and rinsing dirt off has pretty good success.
Thanks for this video! Yours is the best! -> I’m a cancer patient & betties are big on my Dr’s list of foods with antioxidants I should be regularly eating! 🙂👍
I heard you should also clean your refrigerator well if things have molded inside it... the spores are all over and you can't see them... Use the vinegar in a strong solution. Then dry the surfaces. Drawers too...
So using a tight tuberware box would be good to store berries in , I’m sick of buying strawberries raspberries blueberries , and half the time they start to mould even kept refrigerated especially raspberries, half the time I don’t even get to use them so big thank you for this tip I shall be doing this on next shop
This is an old Swiss method for preserving berries. It has been around for decades. Maybe if we just taught our children how to cook and passed along these methods, it wouldn’t seem like we are just discovering them!
Don't forget, after you check your berries with the great ways you showed you should turn the cartoon on its side and gently tap the berries. The cartoon should be full. If it isn't they may have removed berries due to spoilage. Also, berries are expensive and you are not getting your monies worth of there berries are missing from your container.
🤣so much is worse than mold on fruit...what ? WORSE than mold =politics! WORSE than mold on fridge fruit= sneezing w/o covering your pie hole is far worse! Worse than all is subs who do not say " hey GREAT Vid Lisa "😇
all the ones you gave a good hard shake to will be bruised and crushed in the next few hours when the next shoppers are giving their own good hard shakes and on and on it goes..
What's your favorite cooking hack? Maybe I'll feature some in my next tips video :) - Lisa

Hack? White vinegar has been used to keep mold off fruit for as long as I can remember and I'm 78?

Lisa, I love the hack of using your Instant Pot steamer basket & liner as another option to soak, then rinse the berries. Thank you!
This is wonderful ! ! ! Tired of throwing away berries because I don't get them eaten in time ! ! !
Thank you! We always end up throwing out berries! I ordered the meal prep containers you linked!
It'll change your life!! Thanks!
Very good Information, but I was wondering can I put them in air tlght plastic bag?

Thank you! Can I do this with lettuce??
I’ve heard you can also use Lemon juice in place of vinegar
Thank you so much Lisa, this truly works and so simple to do.
I use vinegar and baking soda to wash berries. Makes them last longer.
What a great tip. Surprised they don’t carry the taste of vinegar at all
been having this problem, thx for these tips!
Any tips on keeping cucumbers to last longer?
Awesome. Thank you for sharing!!!!
You helped me with my 🍓 berry berry trauma. Thank you.

Nice video very interesting I was just washing with water
Great video. Thank you for posting!

Do you not have a ratio of water to vinegar?
Hiw much vinegar and water do you mix?

Wow Thank you so much!
5:20 can or can't?
Thank you!
An can I use this procedure for anything, onions potatoes tamato lettuce
What about freezing them after they are cleaned? And also strawberries need the leaves taken off.
I just watched several RUclips vids of different ways of using strawberry tops!

I have a freezer can I use that instead??
The freezer is great.
VERY cool!
Lets do this! Operation no more mold in a week!
What's the process for cleaning frozen berries?
Berries taht are already frozen do not need to be cleaned :)
@@Lisa.Childs Cool. Thanks :)
I use apple cider vinegar on all my veggies.
Why not use the spinner to dry the berries?
When I place my berries in a air-tight container, it gets condensation and spoils the berries.. Any recommendation to avoid this?
Make sure the white vinegar is not from petroleum
Thank you so much. I throw away half of my berries every time I buy them.
Did it work?!😢
Could you be any cuter?? I just love watching you. This is a great hack. Thank you.
Wow, thanks!

Wymans frozen wild blueberries. Problems solved. I never buy fresh blueberries because fresh ones never last.
Me too, I read that the nutrient content is higher in frozen blueberries also.
