How to Record your Computer Screen & Webcam

- FREE and works on Windows, Mac, & Linux. Record your computer screen and a webcam simultaneously.
There are lots of programs out there, like ezvid and Camtasia. Some have ads and others cost money. In this video, I walk through how to download, install, and set up Open Broadcaster Software (obsproject.com). It's free, has no ads, and allows you to record your desktop and a webcam simultaneously. On forums, this is most often recommended as the best screen recording software. You can use this for gaming videos or even corporate walkthroughs and presentations.
The screen recorder is very powerful. Watch the video to learn how to configure and set it up.
INSTALL
To start, we'll go to www.obsproject.com to install the OBS Studio or Open Broadcaster Software Studio software. Then we'll install the software on my computer.
SOURCES
Once installed, the first thing we'll do is add sources. We'll add one for the 'Display Capture' -- which gives us the desktop. We'll add another for the 'Video Capture Device' -- which gives us the webcam. You'll want to make sure that Video Capture Device appears at the top of the list, which ensures that the video appears on top of the desktop image.
OUTPUT TAB
Next we check the output tab. This shows where the videos files are stored. You can also edit the file type that we store the video as. I personally prefer recording in .mp4.
AUDIO
Next we check the audio. You can see how you can adjust the audio level for system audio as well as for the mic.
Lastly, we'll click on recording, show a demo recording in a game, and then play back the file to see how the recording worked.

Exactly what I needed! Not a gamer-- I'm in private education, but with COVID-19 canceling all my workshops, I needed a way to post my tutorials without needing to meet with students. I think this will work!

If you have tried Screencastify, let me know if OBS is better. I find Screencastify simple to use but I am now looking for a screen casting app/software for videos that are not for teaching.

Heya, northern neighbor. Thanks for your helpful information. I changed from capturing display to window capture because I didn't like seeing all of those layers on my monitor when I'm trying to work with OBS Studio. In the process I could no longer see my webcam. Your explanation of setting up helped me find my issue and become comfortable with hiding my OBS screen while recording.

This is the 4th time I've looked this up and you zoned right on in. I was recording in minutes. Thank you! I tried a couple of different ways but this way just worked so quickly and easily. Now I can record my training videos and save time repeating the training over and over.

Great tutorial, especially for beginners. This is much easier than using an el gato with an external mic and editing software. All that was too much for my 8 year old son (and none of it was free) , I wish I knew about this a few years ago! I can also use this for my business. Thank you for the info!
Thank you! This was super helpful. I'm doing virtual classes and sometimes have to do prerecorded versions. This way of recording is super helpful and way better than the other options. And, as someone whose work and personal life are mostly outdoors and involve little use of technology, this was the step-by-step tutorial I needed!

Thanks! This video came in clutch. I do have one suggestion for screen recording though - I think it would be helpful to use the zoom in/out feature rather than full screen when clicking on items with small text (1:29, 2:30, etc)

Thank you, was usefull to startup. However, having difficulties to add my second monitor. OBS only shows one display in the capture list.
Super helpful, had to fiddle with a few things though to get it to actually record my screen. Now I gotta code a dumb Java project and record myself going through it and how it works. God, I hate this class.
