Glad to hear the video was able to help you out! That’s the goal c: I like to focus on setups such as high low rigs because they’re very beginner friendly and that’s all you need to start out. There’s lots of different types of fishing rigs to try, the basics help you understand what’s going on and branching out will become easier c: The strongest teacher is yourself though, best way to learn is to get out there and fish, more time you spend fishing, more knowledge you’ll slowly pick up on! Welcome to saltwater fishing in SoCal Manuel c: let minnow if you have any questions 👌🎣
I’m glad my vidya sparked fun memories for you :D did you use to fish Oceanside Pier often in the past? It’s currently my most favorite fishing pier in SoCal c:
Thanks David :D! I’m glad my vidya was helpful, if you ever have any fishing related questions you can always ask me in the comments and I’ll try my best to answer them c:
Awesome. I fish that pier a lot, but I always go at night so i can get the mackerel and dont have to pay for parking. I also always fish on the deep end. I gotta try fishing the surf side more. Never caught a croaker or corbina.
It’s a very nice pier to fish on, I haven’t really fished at night for mackerel too much but Pier Life Fisherman fishes for them often and has a few videos on the process he uses. The surf side has a lot of different fun variety if you’re going for surfperch or croakers, sand crabs work very well for corbina and a bunch of other species. Overall in the surf side I would expect Yellowfin Croakers, Barred surfperch, Corbina, Spotfin Croakers, and the occasional smaller leopard sharks and shovelnose guitarfish. The bite is gonna be closer to the bottom so any bottom rigs will help, I think fish finder rigs are what the locals like to use. Bait wise your best bets are going to be sand crabs, shrimp, mussels, bloodworms, and ghost shrimp if you can get some c: Thanks for watching SpaceManDawn, let minnow if you happen to have any questions! 👌🎣
@@SvenGoesFishing Nice! I gotta make it out there more often. I live in Menifee, so it takes me an hour to get to the pier. And gas prices arnt helping lol.
Yeah I know what you mean, it takes me about an hour to drive over to Oceanside Pier as well, but the fishings usually good and as the weather gets warmer and warmer, more fish are gonna come in c: Oceanside pier is pretty solid for surfperch and croakers, I think Oceanside in general has the highest overall population for them c: I had a buddy said he went fishing a few days ago and him and some friends landed a minimum of 30 yellowfin croakers!
Hey Sven, I’m 11 years old and I live in Oceanside. Here is a tip. Go near the last part of the pier. That is where all the fish is at. Love your vids keep it up bro! 🤙🏽
Hi Rhys thanks for watching :D glad you enjoy my videos, I’ll definitely try to check out the end the next time I’m in Oceanside, my buddy tells me there’s a lot of mackerel that run though after the sun goes down, I’ll try to get a mackerel video done some day! 👌🎣
If I remember correctly, they’re called claw sinkers, you don’t have to use those specifically, disc or pyramid sinkers are also good for surf or heavy wave conditions c:
My default hook size is 6, small enough for general purpose fishing (great for all surfperch basically) but also big enough for potentially larger sized catches. Eagle claw baitholder/ snell prelooped hooks is what I like to pick up, very convenient for swapping out like if you fish high low rig a lot (which I generally do 😂). The baitholders are good because they have little barbs that help catch the bait and prevent it from slipping off the hook too easily c: Let minnow if you have any more fishing questions, hope I was able to help out, thanks for watching ken ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
@SvenGoesFishing Thanks for the info Sven, I live in Maryland and fish the Chesapeake Bay, also do you prefer circle over J hook? Last question what are your thoughts on fishbites?. Thanks in advance. Tight lines. Ken
@kent7525 both circle and J hooks have their benefits, I usually use J because they are the baitholder styles I like, circle is much better for making sure fish don’t get gut shotted but sometimes it’s hard to keep bait on them. Also for fishbites, they’re definitely more of an east coast and gulf bait, but they’re awesome for sure. I’m trying to use them more over here, and they are rly good at slaying calico bass 😂 shrimp electric chicken is my favorite one, when they work over here, they rly work :D
Nice! You guys caught so many fish that day. Do the croakers out here croak? I didn't hear them croak at all in the video but maybe the mic didn't pick it up. I might have to head over there soon!
Yeah the croakers croak or grunt, sometimes it’s really loud while other times they don’t at all. It is definitely easier to hear in person, the mic doesn’t always catch it 😂 you should definitely head over to Oceanside pier when you get the chance c:
I love fishing in Oceanside, always worth the drive for me and it is a lot closer than Monterey 😂 Luis left a bit earlier during the day but Pier Life and I fished the entire day, with him fishing way into the night lolol. Thanks for watching Doug! Always appreciate the support c:
You don’t have to buy them, you can just forage them c: the pier pilings during low tide would be the closest place to get them, otherwise jetty rocks during low tide would hold them as well. If you did want to buy them, tackle shops usually have them frozen, otherwise you should be able to find them in the seafood section of Asian supermarkets :D!
It is a really nice to fish for sure, they have a lot of amenities such as bathrooms towards the middle of the bait and a bait shop close by! There are slow days but overall I think fishing is always good at Oceanside Pier. Thanks for watching Just A Bear! :D 👌🎣
Amazing video Sven. I like the fishing at Oceanside Pier, I need to head back there from the looks of it if the fishing will still be good. Waiting for more videos
Come back out and fish when you can! The pier is super nice and the fishing is good. I like how there’s a bait shop on the pier too, very helpful when you’re missing a few stuff or decide to come fish on a whim with no bait 😂 thanks for watching as always John, always appreciate your support :D👍👌🎣
@@SvenGoesFishing fishing newport harbor had a Seagal eat the few pieces of squid I brought for bait and only had a swimbait and a few tiny hooks to catch smelt for bait so I put a piece of gum on my hook and ended up catching a 13 in Jack smelt and a bunch of little ones for halibut bait
That’s awesome :D a 13 inch Jacksmelt on gum! Darn Beach Chickens attack again! D: Thanks for sharing, I may try to use gum one day to see if I can catch some too lolol
That depends what you wanna go for. If you wanna go for surfperch or croakers, closer to the beginning of the pier is your better bet in the surf zone. Out deeper people like to catch mackerels and such, or even sharks :o! Sometimes sculpins even like to show up out deep ^-^ let minnow if you have any more fishing questions and I’ll help out as much as I can c:
You can dig for sandcrabs in the sand c: during certain seasons there’s a lot of them there. Daily bag limit is 50 total a day (which is a lot) so you’ll have ample amount of fishing bait c:

I think I might try it one day, not for myself but if it’s a nice fish I could always give it to the local anglers c:

@@SvenGoesFishing Huntington Beach Pier is good but not as productive as Oceanside... throw a live sardine under the pier at the corner of the fire hydrant on the right side... Nouth of the Pier what the locals call the cliffs about mile or so north. The water is shallow for about 100 yards and there's like 3 foot deep trenches as you Wade out....use light spinning gear and a simple barrel swivel 1/2 slider above it and a 3-4 leader with a sandcrab.. Trick is sandcrab no bigger than a finger nail...I use an owner needlepoint hook you can sink it perfect and hide it well in a little sandcrab!
Thanks for the tip Eric! I haven’t fished Huntington Beach pier for a while so I’ll see if I can head out soon if my schedule permits it. I also haven’t done any surf fishing forever, definitely wanna get that done soon too 😂
Yes it is Mike :D limit is 10 for a lot of fish species unless it’s a special restrictions one like California Halibut. I mainly fish catch and release so most of them went back in, I think for that day I only kept one to make myself dinner when I got back home c: thanks for watching :D 👌🎣
Well to be honest pjer are OK but with a lisence I fish the beach and get bigger fish tho leopard big rods and a reel are a need sputnikt work better and a surf pole can cast way father I stop using a bell just loosen your line and a big fish will pull your drag fact a subik rig will get mack or smelt all day long
I agree, pier fishing is just okay, but I think they’re the best way for beginners to learn about fishing/ figure out if they enjoy it enough to invest in a fishing license. I actually want to get back into shore fishing, I haven’t caught a legal leopard shark yet, I don’t plan to keep them but I hear the fight is crazy 😂 thats also true, technically the drag system is a built in bell system and works just as well if you don’t have a bell. I grew up using bells so I still enjoy having them, and it’s quite funny because sometimes at home my wife will ring one of the fishing bells just to spike my adrenaline before I realize we’re home haha.
