I understand it should be common sense not to go into a place with “no no no no no” spray painted on the walls but you can’t say that he knew what he was doing. A Mineshaft should’ve never been used as a clue location but the organizers had used it for fun over safety. Anybody with basic human decency would’ve steered away from using a mineshaft if they wanted people to be safe.

I work in an active silver mine. Stay out. There is nothing interesting down there. Whoever dug the abandoned mine stopped working it for a reason. If you want to look for gold, do it on the surface. I pan for gold on the surface as a hobby and it's way more fun to immediately see the gold as a shiny metal. If there is gold in a mine, it usually doesn't look like much until the ore has passed through a complex refinement process. In abandoned mines, there is nothing down there but water, rats, bats, and poison gas.
This guy is lucky (?) he didn't die. Even outside of the mine, the game sounded pretty stupid at this point. Cutting open a live rat? Come on.

I remember in high school my psychology teacher told the class about the time his friends died while exploring abandoned mines in Virginia City, Nevada. Normally he and his friends would explore these caves and mines together but that day he still had papers to grade or something so he didn't go with. Everything was fine when the two men entered the shaft but when they made their way back, that's when things got bad. While they were walking they had disturbed the air in the shaft, causing the dangerous carbon monoxide gas to "break loose" and mix in with the rest of the air in the shaft. (I'm not sure how else to describe this part). The men quickly realized what was wrong and made a run for the entrance, however one of the men collapsed and the other man ran back to help him. Unable to help him, the other man tried to run out but it was already too late. He collapsed and died a couple feet away from the entrance.
When officials reached the mine, one of the officials saw how close the man had been to the entrance and decided to walk in. He only made it a couple of feet inside before collapsing and having to be dragged out, that's how bad the gas was.
Anyways the moral of the story is, don't go into abandoned caves or mine shafts because you will die.

As an ICU nurse in the seventies and eighties I took care many head injuries. I remember one who was a young woman, she was the high school valedictorian, beautiful, talented, athletic etc. She was in a MVA with her friends and suffered a head injury. She seemed to make a tremendous recovery, was discharged from the ICU in a month. I ran into her father about a year later and asked how she was doing? His answer has always haunted me. He said “she doing well, but she’s not the same person.” I had a friend who ran into a column refereeing a basketball game. He recovered in a couple of weeks, but he completely lost his sense of humor. The joke on the unit was that to a neurosurgeon a full recovery meant a person could feed themselves.

I've spent more time underground in abandoned mines than most people have spent outside. There is a list of gear that is REQUIRED to be safe inside of a mine. A bump cap/climbing helmet with multi-point chin strap. Head lamp, with plenty of extra batteries. Handheld flashlight, with extra batteries. Heavy duty harness. Multiple 60M lengths of climbing rope fastened to a secure anchor point outside of the mine, or near the winze/shaft/decline you're rappelling down. Enough carabiners to hang a tank. Multiple Ascenders. A fall limiter. Heavy closed toed boots. A backpack with 3 days of food, water, and painkillers as well as an IFAK. Impact gloves. Long, heavy duty trousers. Heavy duty shirt or blouse. Pulse oximeter. Oxygen meter. Multigas detector and/or Geiger counter if you're in a Uranium mine.
Most importantly, multiple people and radios. If you fall, you can still reach someone on a line of sight radio. That person can reach someone else over a line of sight network of handhelds or even a cross-band repeater, and someone else can start the rescue. All of the aforementioned gear is meant to prevent a fall and rescue, or to help you survive in the event that you need rescuing. Preparedness is the only way to survive in abandoned mines. Otherwise, you're just setting yourself up to become the next Susan Powell.
If you're not extremely experienced in caving, rappelling, roping, mountaineering, and even Search and Rescue/First aid don't enter mines. I have certifications upon certifications upon certifications that give me the confidence and ability to safely navigate mines with relative ease. I only enter mines with a real purpose, such as recovery of artifacts, people, or prospecting. If you don't have a real reason to go into the mine, maybe don't go into the mine.

I've found mines to be safer and easier to navigate than caves.

Having been part of a group of people who delved in to abandoned mines in our youth (and other really stupid things) I can confirm that it is horribly dangerous; We were deep in one working that had been abandoned about a hundred years earlier and the mine floor was covered with slabs of rock that had peeled off of the roof. Walking over this broken terrain and I nearly fell in to a winze (vertical shaft) to a level that we did not know where the adit (horizontal entrance) was at. At the bottom was a pile of broken and rusty iron machinery that would of impaled anyone who fell in.
We had plenty of lights, wore helmets, pads, gloves, and worked as a team, but still, it was insane what we did in the 1980's.

Crazy how the game grew from its beginnings! Also stay out of old out-of-service mines! They are abandoned for a reason. It's not like a mining company lost money and ditched it. They aren't like an abandoned building, which are often times abandoned due to a financial reason. Oh no, mines are abandoned because all the precious metal was mined OR it became too unsafe. In many cases its both...the precious metals remaining could no longer be safely mined. I wish people knew the nature on why mines become abandoned. It really is for totally different reasons than other abandoned sites.
You see those questions about "what's a good piece of life advice?" This is one. Abandoned buildings and such are one thing to explore. But abandoned mines are absolutely off-limits. I'd explore Chernobyl before I'd explore an old deserted mine. Not even kidding.

This reminds me of when I went on a night hike once. The goal was orienteering, and every so often there were checkpoints that would grade you on how conspicuous you were as you approached, encouraging a stealthy progress with minimal light. After one checkpoint, my group misread the next direction on the sheet and ambled straight towards a quarry entrance. Fortunately, although the quarry was closed for the night it wasn't abandoned, and the warning sign at the (wide open) entrance was well-illuminated. We realised we must have made a mistake and backtracked to the checkpoint, re-read the directions and went on our way along the correct route. I shudder to think what might have happened if the quarry lights had been switched off.

Now being an engineer and a doctor, or an IT specialist is quite different as you need to be well-versed in the sciences to study those areas. @@mikshinee87 "This is the only reason artists make so much money".
The music industry isn't as easy or glamorous as you think it is. The amount of people actually have the ability to make good music is miniscule. There's a reason it's called "art": It's an art form, with techniques and conventions you have to master just to something halfway decent. Even if a musician is as sharp as a brick, you still have to recognize the skill it takes to master that art.
The same goes for other specialty fields. It's not rare, it's human nature. You can be sharp in one field, and completely numb-skulled in others. Knowing the sciences doesn't make you an expert at navigating the world or human interaction, it makes you an expert in a specific field of applied knowledge. Otherwise every IT Specialist would be a CEO.
You don't make your point any stronger by downplaying the effort that's required in other fields that you don't like as much as the sciences. If they were as easy as you make them sound, everyone would do them. People try, countless fail, the small few who succeed rise to the top.

In mining areas there are often hundreds and even thousands of adits, open stopes, inclines, and shafts, of which very few are covered or have warning signs. Most abandoned mines in the western U.S. aren't mapped, and aren't even known about unless you dig through old geological reports from 100+ years ago. States have bureaus of mining that place warning signs and put bat-safe covers on mine entrances, but as someone who used to explore mines in Colorado... they can really only do so much when hundreds of thousands of abandoned mines exist. It doesn't help either that they're often in remote or extremely difficult to access regions, like the mines in CO which often had entrances above 13,000ft - getting equipment and personnel to those locations often exceeds the budgets of those institutions. tl;dr, most western states don't care enough about abandoned mining hazards and those that do have too many mines to deal with.
