Thank-you. I am in transition but what I learn is: zero drop and wide toe box, this is essential for my feet. I had fascite plantar in one foot and going barefoot healed, the other is impruving slowly: I want to tray vibram fivefingers v-run women's, they are in discount here in Italy. I cannot tray on and I don't like buying online, I read yesterday that they are good for wide toe box too and your video gave me a good motivation. Karma. Have a nice life.
Thank you for your comment. Yes i agree about online buying it can be a bit risky but once you know your size then it's usually fine. Vibram five fingers are great especially having the individual toe pockets they are amazing for foot health. The important thing when transitioning to barefoot shoes is to start small and gradually increase the distance that you walk/run in them to safely rebuild foot strength. I have some exercise routines on my channel including foot exercise routines which may help you out. All the best!
Altra did have a really good shoe, the Sampson it was super light, thin, pliable and wide, but most of their runners don’t do it for me these days. I’ve recently got vibram runners. But in reality I run barefoot. But I don’t compete.
I've never heard of that shoe! It sounds epic. I like to have a mixture of highly cushioned, slightly cushioned, and minimalist shoes, and then of course weekly barefoot hill sprints 😁 I've found since competing more in recent years I've needed to vary up the shoes I wear for different scenarios and workouts but it all comes down to individual needs and preferences at the end of the day! 😁
Yeah I really enjoy running in the escalante range, they are similar to the feel of the superiors but a bit lighter and bouncier 👌 I've heard that the Torin is a great shoe for the road but I haven't tried those yet, can only afford so many shoes 😅
@@WarneysWorld if you like a softer ride, the escalante 2.5s are softest. The escalante 3s kind of feel like a mix between the racer and the 2.5s. And the racer is the firmest but lightest of the 3 and good over shorter distances. All the best!
Very interesting the message you should use different kind of shoes to train the muscles in different ways, never thought about that. What about TOPO? Have you tried them? What is your opinion on them?
Yeah I find it has been extremely beneficial for my training! My brother has a pair of topos and I was going to purchase some topo trail shoes myself but they had some arch support in them which I've found always aggravates my feet so I bought the Altra lone peaks instead. I think the midsole cushioning is supposed to be very nice in the topos but I don't know too much about them unfortunately
@@jasparvowden I have run about 200 miles in Topo Magnifly's and about 15 miles in Specter's (had to return them). Both have arch support which is placed funny for my foot and causes significant arch pain. More significant though they have a significant toe spring that bothers my arch. The Specter is stiff as a board and I couldn't run more than 2 miles without discomfort. Altras are much flatter and don't bother my feet.
@@wynstoman yeah I usually get the same issues in my feet with any shoe that has arch support so I just stay clear of them nowadays! If my feet can't flatten out and the ankle can't pronate properly while I run it causes a lot of pain!
Great video! Got another subscriber from me. I like how you remain open to occasionally rotating more traditional running shoes. I currently rotate the Escalante 3 (primarily) with the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 (when my feet need a rest/change). I'm interested in rotating in 5fingers. 2 questions... 1.) Do you wear socks with the 5 fingers, and if so, which ones? 2.) How do you size the 5 fingers relative to the Escalante? I'm size 12 Escalante and not sure what size to go for.
Thanks mate I appreciate that! 😁👍 I use the injinji toe socks in the Vibrams I find they last a lot longer than the Vibram brand socks and are a little bit more comfortable as well. And I wear the same size in Vibrams as I do with the Altra shoes so that keeps it easy!
I never could run but I started go faster using minimalist shoes (put off soles from myself) when I walk for kms: I started run too, was a strange thing and came automatically. I am a expert of holistic medicine but I ned somethings more and barefoot is that. Good karma to you.
Hey Robbie, good to hear from you mate! I usually get the Altra shoes from the Altra Australian website but there's also a new zealand distributor called trek n travel which have great prices they just have a little less variety of the altra shoes but worth a look! Cheers
Hey mate, my vibrams are EU42 which is about US9-9.5 but I'm going to go up to EU43 next time as its a more comfortable fit and the racers are US9 which I would prefer to be either 9.5/10
@@jasparvowden my V-Run in EU44 (US10.5-11) fits nicely. My Escalante Racer in EU45 (US11) is OK length wise but lacks a bit of toe volume and my pinkies are a bit squashed in.
Yeah I notice the same with the racers a little bit with the pinkies which is hard to avoid with most shoes even Altra. You just can't beat the forefoot fit of a Vibram!
hi Jaspar I just subscribed to your channel, I find the contents very useful. About the shoes, do you wear these even outside of physical activity? If not, which ones do you use instead? I would like to find a wide and comfortable shoe model also for everyday life, such as going around town or going to work.
Thank you for the subscription I appreciate it and I'm glad the content is helpful 😊 when I'm not training I usually just wear the vibram five finger shoes or I go barefoot as much as possible. I find that when I'm walking in bare feet or minimalist shoes it makes me more conscious of how I hold my posture and keeps me light on my feet which I believe helps me be more nimble when I run but that's just my own personal approach, it may not work for everyone. Hope that helps 👍
On a side note, if you're looking for a comfortable wide every day shoe that has a bit of cushioning then the escalante 2.5 is very comfortable in my opinion. Nice stretchy and breathable mesh with a wide toe box

Hey mate, if you don't like too much padding then definitely the racer over the shorter distance as it's fast and snappy and it's the lightest shoe of these 3 👍
@@wdewilde1361 yeah for sure! I've taken them on a few runs over 10km and they felt good. I guess it also depends on what kind of shoes you're familiar with. If you're conditioned to running in more minimalist footwear or lower stack shoes then the escalante racer is great but if you prefer a bit more cushioning then the 2.5 or 3 will probably suit you better. There's only a 2mm difference between the shoes so it's not much difference anyway
@@jasparvowden Thanks allot mate. The 2.5 seems to be to “wobly” and the 3.0 to tight because of the upper. Thats Why I think the racer would be better. Not sure ofcourse! Subbed to the channel
