Why Enner Valencia's goal was disallowed: VAR Offside | Qatar 0-2 Ecuador (FIFA World Cup 2022)

  • What looked an extremely dodgy refereeing decision at first glance, was actually the correct call. #worldcup2022 #offside #var
Here is why: Offside in the build-up to the goal.
    Timeline of events:
    1. Ecuador take a deep free kick. Every player is on-side.
    2. The Qatari goalkeeper contests the ball, with Ecuadorian player Félix Torres (number 2) also making contact with the ball. At this moment, Ecuador's Michael Estrada (number 11) is offside... his leg is beyond the 2nd last defender (the defender behind him, seen in thumbnail). The Qatari goalkeeper is actually the 3rd last defender.*
    3. The ball bounces.
    4. Michael Estrada heads the ball to Félix Torres. Offside must be called, Estrada was offside when his teammate last played the ball.
    5. Félix Torres volleys the ball towards goal.
    6. Enner Valencia scores with a header.

      This makes no sense.
The keeper is the first person to make contact with the ball.
Therefore that rules out any offensive player being offside.

You say the Qatari goalkeeper is the third last defender, but that isn't clear from the shots. The VAR graphic is a joke as it completely removes the goalkeeper who looks to me like he is the 2nd defender, not much use having a graphic where you remove the player that looks like he might be playing the guy onside and just use some other random defender as the only player you compare against.

Hey Popelazo, howcome people, you included, keeps forgetting, that the play starts at the freekick.
      -No men offside during freekick!
-The player heading the ball can't play himself to offside, and he doesn't!
-There's three Q men under the ball and receiving offender during the second touch to the ball
-There's four Q men under the ball and receiving offender during the second header
-There's five Q men under the ball and receiving goal scorer during the bicycle pass.

To explain this better because I finally understand it, right where they pause there are 3 people in the air contesting the ball: the keeper the defender and the Ecuadorian player (who is conveniently hidden in almost every view jersey number 2...this is what confused me the most). This is when the pass starts. The Ecuadorian player heads the ball straight up, then after it bounces back up #11 who is offsides heads the ball up and then #2 does the bicycle kick to pass.
I was confused because I thought the VR image with number 11 being offsides was the same person who contested the first header next to the goal keeper...it's not the same person there are two people right next to each other, #2 and #11 but the camera angles are so bad that we only see #11 until after everything happens.

ESPN editor, Johnson, explains that because the ball came off Ecuador defender Felix Torres and was immediately picked up by team-mate Michael Estrada, whose knee was in an offside position, the call was the correct one. This is because Al Sheeb came out to claim the cross, leaving just one defender behind the goalkeeper - which is classed as offside. Estrada then headed the ball back to Torres, who floated in a delightful cross for Valencia to head home. However, Estrada's involvement is why the goal was disallowed.

From the freekick, all players are onside. That's where VAR fucked up.. my guess is VAR/FIFA are trying to avoid a Qatar imbarressment, as host nation 🤷

My question is why is that a rule? So a keeper gets bailed out for making a mistake?

    • @fabio-ie9eu

exactly my thought. the goalkeeper made a rookie mistake barely any other keeper playing in the world cup would have done.

Naw no offside when the ball is played every Ecuadorian player is onside and that’s what matters when the ball is played not when you receive the ball the call was bs

The header. It’s when the Ecuador player heads the ball not when the free kick is taken.

@@awwasson So who exactly was offside? What’s the jersey number? A very bogus call. No one was offside.

@@Rayunicorn1 when the ball is played into the box Ecuador no.2 heads the ball, he is onside. However when the ball is headed Ecuador no.11 is offside (his leg). No.11 is the next to make contact with the ball so therefore it is offside.

As you can see on 00:20 the player that you say is offside is the same that do de pass. The other one which make the next pass is behind him, so no offside
