That he saw that the Turan situation was amazing, but the first one wasn't a penalty it's a contact sport so this is way to light for a penalty. And otamendi shoud have been rewarded a red card at the penalty for France as he was the last player and stopped a clear goal scoring opportunity

The ref was very well balanced throughout the whole match. The foul on Di Maria WAS a penalty. It doesn't matter if it was a hard or soft foul, it was a foul. There are several things that go into determining whether a foul is a foul (and with the consideration of a perfect world).
@@olivier4916 he dribbled past dembele already. Then, when dembele tried getting close to di maria, he caught di maria's foot. Not that dembele intended yo do it, but it's the same as when you're walking too close behind someone - one of you is going to feel it and trip up most likely.
Nice breakdown. I was dubious of the Di María pen but you’ve done a better job with your angles than some others out there. Definitely a great performance by this ref and no one should feel hard done.
Even this video missed out on the real reason it was a penalty: the pictures used here are late to the fault. Just before this photos, Demuele hits on the back of Di Maria's heel, which causes it to bounce heavily on the ground and counting as enough cause of tripping. Easy to see in HD and slo mo
They had a great slow motion moment of it on the match of the day? The one with Gary Lineker where you can clearly see Di Marias heel being clipped and it causes hit foot to hit his calf.
@@adriannuske Remember that many people doubting and calling it a "soft penalty" have never in their lives played football or ran at full speed and felt what a "slight touch" feels like and what can it do to your balance. It was spectacular match, and hard to ref, but imo the referee made very good decisions, he dynamized the game, if you are thinking that ref was bad, check the match for 3rd place. It was catastrophy. In this video there is a very accurate explain of his decision. Good job!
I was trying to find a video explaining the ref's calls in the final, given that they were more that crucial. Them being 3 penalties is the main one. That was a great job! I'm convinced he made all the right calls.
Glad you found the video useful! I’m also convinced he made the right calls but I appreciate we all have different perspectives so not everyone will agree 👍
It was a historic match, with outstanding performances, including the performance of the referee who did not make a mistake in any of his important decisions.
Pedro Pinzon.
@@realfan91 😂😂😂 literally people like you should just stop watching football my guy made a whole video to provide proof you guys cry about and it’s still not enough. 😂
I think the referree did an outstanding job in this match. Di Maria penalty was a soft foul but a foul nonetheless. He gets clipped from behind by Dembele. First penalty on France was also the correct decision as the french player was through on goal and the argentine defender brings him down deliberately. The handball penalty was clear as well as his arm was not stuck to his body and had he not blocked it, the ball would have went past him and possibly could've been a goal. The Thuram penalty is a little harder to determine but once again the referee made the right call. As Thuram approached the defender and saw that he had extended his leg out he saw a golden opportunity to try and get a penalty but the defender with quick reactions pulled his leg back just in time to avoid tripping Thuram but Thuram had already commited himself to get the foul so he dives in an effort to get the foul called but good job on the referree for seeing it.

Excellent job to explain this cases. I'm a Pole, so this match was a special for me, and I'm really proud of Szymon. Amazing ref's performance. One of the best of all time.
When Szymon gave the yellow card to Thuram it was an absolutely outstanding moment. Thuram dived very professionally, but the referee's instant reaction made even him smile (I don't blame Thuram for diving, otherwise I would not watch football at all 🤣)
I just watched ref Marciniak's interview and this guy is the most arrogant ref I have ever heard, he behaves completely narcissistically. Not an humble person for sure. But worst of all, during the interview, you could feel obviously what were his "preferences" concerning the final... I have nothing against Argentina but how a polish ref can do really fair since the polish team lost against France during 1/8. Were the other refs that bad? Just think about it...
This was the best ref performance of the whole worldcup. Literally no mistakes. And I was a France (Mbappe) fan. I won cause Mbappe scored 4 goals. The highest in the history of a worldcup final
Ref was superb, some people asking why VAR was not called, because the referee is the highest authority and wasn't in need of VAR to take decisions and quick decision making is what you need when you're playing a World Cup final. To people saying 'It was a soft foul' do yourself a favour and read football rules, the game is getting closer and closer to what the rules say thanks to technology.
I'm tired of hearing a lot of people saying that we bought the game and that the ref was biased. It was one of the best arbitrations I saw in my life and I said that after he gave France 2 penalties. Nice vid btw, you really have a talent to explain better than anyone how the rules of the game work.
Bro the 2 penalty france got was very clear and even a amateur football watcher would know it's a foul While the first penalty Argentina got doesn't even look like a foul, the player fall before dembelle make contact with his foot and the shoulder push was lighter than a kid full strength push
@@TomThePuss Not really. Dembele stuck his foot in unnatural position as if he was trying to trip Di Maria. If he didn't fall easily he could as well getting trip as well.
Probably the best individual performance. He was firm and in control but showed character and some humor to keep players relatively relaxed. Notice the game didn’t get out of control at any point.
Before Messi scored his second goal substitue players ran into the pitch and according to the rules they should take away the goal. And before Montiel a french player touched the ball with his hand so the decision wasn't correct. Argentina should have get a free kick.
Nice video. Thanks. One thing I will like to see analyzed is that before the last penalty (hand from an Argentina player), I now see a hand from a France player just after the corner. As there is not much footage about that I will love to see someone analyze it in detail. Thanks.
@Polyglot Traveler You and they are wrong. It is a head. If it was a hand, the ball would cover the palm. Instead of that you can clearly see the palm all the time. Also bounce angle clearly shows that ball bounced from the head. They are in different positions. Finally, other camera gives obvious answer that it was a head.
Before Messi scored his second goal substitue players ran into the pitch and according to the rules they should take away the goal. And before Montiel a french player touched the ball with his hand so the decision wasn't correct. Argentina should have get a free kick.
I think right before the second penalty for France, the ball hit the French player’s hand first and then there’s the second handball by the Argentina player trying to block Mbappe’s kick.
This ref was way better than some of the prior refs. The first penalty, for Argentina, was the softest of fouls and dubious. He also stopped a fast French counter attack towards the end of the match to give a yellow card to an Argentinian player for a foul. Should have given advantage instead and done the booking later. Other than that, he was way better than the refs in England-France, Argentina-Holland, the ref who killed Croatia in the semi final etc.
good comment. First penalty was definitely soft but still a foul based on the contact and position Dembele was in (behind Di Maria). A referee can let play continue before issuing a yellow card but if the play has already stopped (which it did for the free kick) then the yellow card should be shown before play restarts.
@@RJG7203 yeah right, nothing to see here... Gimme a break, real theft- Crash into a goal keeper that stuck it self in place before the Alvarez collide into him. @@laszlopap2565 I'll say this, those players running onto the pitch were inconsequential, and wouldn't have effected the actual goal being scored. To help you all out, I've checked replays and Upamecano did NOT use his hand before Mbappe got the penalty for Montiel's handball. Upamecano used his head; watch the replays in slow-motion. So please don't be telling me Upamecano handled it. Video here: instagram.com/reel/CmXTW-KgjyQ/?igshid=ZDFmNTE4Nzc= Messi was NOT offside, unless you don't understand the offside law and yes, it was a different circumstance to the Griezmann offside against Tunisia. The other fouls in this game are simply a matter of perspective, experience and opinion.
from a angle, i think you can see a hand ball from france player in the corner that lead to mbappe shooting the ball to the hand of argentine player, not sure
This video is wrong about the first penalty given to Di Maria. If you compare to the Thuram foul, it is an equivalent situation in which Enzo removes his leg, but Dembele's foot was fully planted on the ground before it made contact with Di Maria's foot, therefore it was also not a penalty b/c there was nothing Dembele could've done to move his foot while running, so the foul was not intentional. It was just an accidental contact that happened as a result of the play/defensive effort. How is it Dembele's fault that Di Maria's foot gets caught by his foot when it's not even moving at the point? That's just part the game. You're running next to or behind someone to keep up, and their foot hits your leg as you're running. That's not a foul. It would've been a foul if Dembele tried to intercept the ball as Di Maria's dribbling, failed, and instead clipped Di Maria in the process. That would've been a foul. Thuram was not a foul, but neither was Di Maria's. Sorry. Some people who say that this World cup favored Messi are not completely wrong. There was a clear bias toward Argentina.
The BIG differing factor between both incidents is that Dembele was BEHIND Di Maria. It was impossible for him to get to the ball without touching/fouling Di Maria. He was careless and foolish in his actions. This is not debatable. Contact is part of the game, having played for 20 years I agree on that BUT if you make contact from behind without touching the ball, you are at high risk of giving a foul away, even if your touch on the opponent is minimal.
France really needs to be fair. Argentina won fair and square and France needs to accept it. All argentina goals were correct and both the teams played amazingly leading to the best finals in WC history
France didn’t even play amazingly. Argentina clearly dominated entire game, France was lucky cuz Otamendi couldn’t foul him outside the box, Montiel’s arm, and Messi lost the ball which was unfortunate. Argentina chased to win the World Cup, France chased after Argentina. That’s the moral of the game
The deal was give messi the worldcup before he retire and the fifa referees carried him with 5 penalties to the finals, we all now that by now. But its nice to messi fans and kids
In Cricket, every close call is reviewed by the umpire(referee) on VAR (called DRS in cricket). But in Football, it depends on the referees mood. Not a good rule
I agree every close call should be checked by VAR. Especially if it’s a final of a World Cup. I’ll never understand why they don’t go to VAR for things like this.
@@endronek How can you tell people with a straight face that behind the scenes VAR is doing a good job if they let the ref hand out a penalty for Argentina when DiMaria dives, but when Thuram does it after a challenge with argueably much more contact, he gets a yellow?
@@devnull1013 What can I say... I saw both situations multiple times and I agree with referee's decisions. If DiMaria wasn't clipped before he started falling then it wouldn't be a penalty. If Thuram was clipped before he started falling then it would be a pen for France. You can even see that in both situation players didn't really contest referee's decisions. Neutral experts also agree with referee's decisions. Tho I agree that a lot of VAR decisions seemed controversial to me. It seems that with VAR and extreme slow-motion even the slightest touch can be classified as a foul.
I'm a fan of Argentina but from quarter final they don't deserve support. 1:48 Messi offside if he don't make a move it's okay but here it's not like that he pull out the defender that's consider as offside bcoz in the built up of that goal he pulled out the defender. I think you intentionally skipped 2 crucial phases here, you should have talked about the 2 French counter attacks, stopped by the referee for some imaginary yellow cards (the last minutes of the 90 minutes)
Certainly not intentional. I focused on the main moments with VAR. Yes the ref could and probably should have let the play continue in those situations.
At 0:41 Dembele tripped Di Maria's left leg with his right foot. But wasn't Di Maria already starting to fall before this position? How can we conclude from this that it was a penalty?
I couldn’t include video because of copyright but when you watch video replays, Dembele makes contact with Di Maria BEFORE he begins to fall down. Again, it’s Dembele’s contact that results in the pen, not the overly dramatic fall by Di Maria.
Wow, what a clear explanation. I kinda confused when ref pulls yl card for thuram. Thanks a lot bro. This game is one of the few games the ref crew did a perfect job.
0:32 Whether or not French players raised their hands doesn't matter; ultimately the play itself has to be examined standalone. It is foolish for the referee to assume that just because they raise their hands it implies guilt of a fault being done; also the referee could also conclude that because they raise their hands that means that it is not a foul, because four or five people agree with each other. Di Maria's penalty was not a penalty. He cheated, he dived, he acted. The penalty of France was more convincing but still the French player acted too a bit. Probably not a penalty too.
Di Maria's penalty was questionable. Can't believe they didn't double check through VAR in a Final. What's the point of having VAR if you're not gonna use it? That 1st goal changed everything.
Its a foul on Di Maria, there are lots of video online showing his ankle get moved unnaturally by Dembele. The ref is absolutely sharp in this final making all the calls.
Di Maria dove that. He clearly falls before actual contact with the leg and the ref didn't even bother to check VAR which says a lot. Muani was literally grabbed and kneed with some momentum. They are not the same. Not surprised.. Argentina has 5 controversial penalties in this WC.
@@PaulSpacey I do agree there was contact. However, from the footage from part 1 and 2 of your videos I've seen plus the actual footage of the game from what we are shown, it still looks like the Argentinian player made foot contact as he was falling and not before he fell. Hence why I think he dove and was intentional as soon as he was touched which resulted to more contact and justified it. If it was a push it would have had to of been extremely light. There have been much more aggressive fouls like ENG vs FRA for the English that weren't called or Morocco for example but they weren't. Probably bad and/or inconsistent refs.
In sports with contacts you will never be sure about referee decisions. Perhaps in the future could be used a software instead a referee but it would be rather boring.
I find it funny no one seem to realise that dembele planted his foot already and it worked fine until Di Maria kicked dembeles leg. Dembele can absolutely be there and if his leg was going into Di Maria then that is a whole different situation. Leg was not hitting Di Maria on the way to being put on the ground. Di Maria causes the contact. Also you just assume the defenders raise their hands because they think it’s a penalty which is ridiculous. Obviously if someone goes down in the box during a WC final you want to influence the ref of decisions no matter if it’s a pen or not. Same thing they do to win some throw ins. Explanation of ref would be sufficient enough without your own opinions.
Was Mbappé in an offside position? Muani took the right decision to shoot but should have scored based on the circumstances, although Martinez made a very good reaction save (with his foot).
No , he was onside and if he score that will be the end of game and france win but he didnt pass to him and failed to score, thank for god messi deserve to win world cup he is the goat of the game 🇦🇷🐐
What a great video! I only have one comment and that's regarding Montiel's handball. I don't disagree with you that it is a handball, but I must note that everybody overlooks the fact that there should have been a handball called against France just seconds before Montiel's handball. I am 1000% sure that would have altered the course of the game and prevented it from going to extra time.
It wasn’t handball by Upamecano btw. I did a couple of videos showing that he clearly headed it. The angle of some replays made it look like a hand but it was his head 😊
Let me say I am French and played club football for 47 years. I think the ref may have made a few mistakes but altogether things were fair. Argentina were the better side that day and they won. All is well.
Excellent video I could understand people believing there was preference for Messi (and by the same logic also for France) getting to finals but the idea of a "rigged" cup is just conspiracy crazies doing a number on us No one with at least some understanding of the complexities of an event like the WC (or a 22 people sport like football) could even fathom such outlandish idea. Even less if you considered it was somehow all risked by two French pens and a penalty shootout. The attitude of people with this mindset is mental and only gives away two things: 1. They don't understand football nor event organization 2. They're bizarrely biased against Argentina Also, don't people find it weird that FIFA didn't gave the cup as early as 2014 to Messi? But sure, they care so much for him and for his career to fix a 3-3 game, but not a 1-0 one Wtf is wrong with these people
All correct calls. Montiel was just unlucky at the wrong place and wrong time cuz there was no way for him to react to Mbappe’s powerful shot. He was definitely unintentional but regardless
Montiel was a pussy, he was brought for one thing, to defend the lead. If you're facing a shot, be a man and take it head on. If it hits, let it. He just faced the other side like a chicken and got a penalty against him. If you're going to defend make sure you face the ball and not your own goal.
@@ezegutierrez1 It was a soft penalty, he put no power on it, didnt place it. A better penalty saver like Bono, Martinez or Livakovic would have saved it.

Especially in Frances vs England and Morocco game, and a majority of Argentina’s game throughout the knockout and penalty calls and amount of yellows and sent offs that should of been directed at them, as well offside calls and ruling being so vague as similar goals scored in the same fashion that should have been offside were counted as goals in other games, games including Brazil Switzerland, Croatia Belgium, Ecuador Qatar, Argentina Saudi Arabia, that were scored in the final. sad but it is what it is at the end of the day
I’m not sure it’s a FIFA conspiracy. More likely it’s inherent bias in referees which is a normal thing for everyone. We all have inherent biases. Some dodgy ref performances in some of the games but I thought the ref in the final had a good game.
@@PaulSpacey overall the tournament had dodgy refs and calls. Not just the final. Officiating was so vague and unclear in terms of everything. Otamendi should be given a red card for his tackle, period, it was a clear contact and from behind where there was no one between goal keeper and striker, clearly obstructing goal. Other decisions could have been different if VAR was involved instead of Referee making an instant decision, even VAR confirmed they wouldn't have given a penalty for Di Maria's dive if they would have been referred without referee giving the penalty. They need clear evidence to over turn Referee's decision which wasn't there but they didn't have a clear evidence of any contact as well. Messi was clearly offside and faking the play which should be considered as it confuses defenders. Even the image clearly shows the finger was offside for the last pass but now officials are not using finger and arm as offside when it was used for each and every offside decision in this world cup. Thuram dive, you can argue it wasn't a foul, which it was IMHO, but Referee pulled out the yellow card as fast as possible to avoid any VAR intervention. Anyway, happy that Messi won but would have been happier if this world cup was `Fair Play` and the fair team would have won the world cup. Feels like this world cup was written Messi all over even before the knock out stage started. Argentina started their last 3 match with 1-0 lead before coming out of dressing room. PS: It's really strange that FIFA has 10K Camera's & sensors inside the ball to check if Ronaldo's hair touched the ball or not, but they don't have much Camera angles to check an obvious Dembele and Thuram's foul.

They changed the rule to penalise even if it's not intentional and looking away. So yea, always some harsh decisions. In the Premier League, some of these unintentional handballs are still not given, especially when they are penalties.
Yes Premier League and Champions League do sometimes determine things differently which is not good for consistency and understanding. If your arm is away from your body, it’s a risk.

Lol, Argentina and Messi were given a lot of penalties to make it this far and win it with the help of FIFA. So poor "little" Messi was entitled to win this. The game against The Neverthelands and that handball would have been a penalty kick if it was another country. People are beginning to realize that something fishy was going on in these World Cup games.
What hand ball 💀🤣 there was never hand ball in the box . Dude ur aciting like pen determine the game aregentina dominated the game and scored more after 🤣. By ur logic every Madrid champion league run is riggged 💀🤣
Calling that Thuram's simulation is top class refereeing. Not until i saw the replay did i agree it wasn't a penalty. Top class officiating there and all round with little errors.
I agree and would add despite Di Maria going down too easily , Dembele made the mistake in sticking his foot, probably trying to trip him. His (attempted) push from the back may warrant a foul as well. I agree it's really part of the game. The 'dive' now probably could be interpreted as 'claiming a prize'. I think the reason why people think this is not a pen is because they still think that contact is necessary to warrant a foul while in modern game despite the rulebook stated otherwise. Dunno if it's a good thing for the sport, though.
An illegal tackle is when contact happen, and a foul means and illegal TACKLE. Dembele could've made kung fu+breakdance in the vecinity of Di Marria as long as it doesnt impair Di Maria's ability to handle the ball in an ilegal way. No ilegal touch, means no impairment. There isnt something like "dont make gestures " or "if you deceive the referee you get a penalty" in the football rulebook. VAR exists for reasons such as this: to figure out if in sensitive situations like this contact happened(because the referee couldnt clearly see).
@@sneakcr3144 No, not really. There's actually a rule that suggested even an attempt of fouling could constitute a foul. For example in the foul section of IFAB, there is a point where you could get a direct free kick/pen if you 'trip' OR 'attempting to trip' someone. Since the 'trip' (which needs a contact) is mentioned the 'attempted to trip' means that even without contact, it could still be a foul. Therefore, even an attempt of pushing or risking a foul could be judged by this criteria. If Dembele did a 'Kungfu' near DiMaria, he could get carded for endangering him as well, despite not touching him, since there is also a clause about 'attempting to strike'.
@@yoshuareynaldo2295 I exagerated when said kung fu, he could've been punished for dangerous play if he did kung fu, but that would mean indirect free kick from the box, so NOT A PENALTY. And yes, there is attempt, but what does constitute an attempt? If what you say is true, then the tackle on Thuram from 87 minute is even more a penalty than what Dembele did. The expression "trips or attempts to trip", refers to the situation in which a player is runing behind another player that has the ball, and the player that is behind trips in order to fall on the legs of the running player, or, attempts to trip in order to break the player's ballance, but it requires some sort of physical contact, but even so, Dembele did not trip. That section refers to the player that doesnt have the ball, not the one that has it. Dembele didnt trip. Also, Dembele didnt strike, or didnt kick Di Maria. Di Maria clipped his own foot www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-12---fouls-and-misconduct You can see here....at section 2 : Indirect Free Kick The second condition is "impedes the progress of an opponent without any contact being made". So what Dembele did is at MOST an indirecte free kick but NOT A PENALTY. Keep in mind, that historically, teams that won the world cup barely got 1 penalty per tournament, but argentina got 6 penalties in 8 matches , and most of them fishy as hell. And I am speaking as a guy that is happy that argentina won, I am not french, but I hate to see argentina win like this and also dislike what the world cup has become. In 1978, Argentina won cuz they bribed Peru. In 1986, Maradona scored with his hand. Now, Argentina gets an insane amount of penalties, half of them very disputable, France doesnt get penalty for an even more sensitive tackle, and everything happens when the World cup is being held in a corrupt country that has huge human rights issues. I wanted at least the final to be a clean win for Argentina....but the truth is, it isnt a clean win.
Jee, everybody is looking at thurams rught foot, but look closer, fernandes kicks away thurams left foot, with the result Thuram cant place his left foot on the ground and then his rught foot keeps hanging.... so 100% penalty. Cant believe var did not see that
You don't give weak calls like that in a final. Not in any game. Di Maria intentionally went down even though the contact wasn't significant to even hinder him. Some people seem to think that every contact is a penalty now. Football is a contact sport though and the extent of the contact matters. This interpretation encourages diving.
Referee ruined the game. Buased towards Argentina. Otamendi no red card or even a yellow when he was the last man. Messi gets a free kick for running into a player. Messi pulls back French player to stop counter attack. No yellow. Di maria dive. penalty. Thuram dive. Yellow card. Ruined the game.
@@yolomax there is that perspective obviously. We don't want it to be a non-contact sport but this case in particular is contact from behind which is just a dangerous situation for any player, especially in the penalty area and they know that
@@PaulSpacey can i ask, do you see the foul be at the foot area or the hand because im not really sure(lookong back at the video it looks like the foot)
Nice video and channel. It really clarifies situations that some pointed as "referee helping Argentina, referring to argentinian players invading the field, ignoring that 1) That doesn´t disallow the goal if there was no interference. 2) Same happened with French players. The "Messi offside" in the third goal and the knee pass from Romero to Martinez are situations that can only be questioned by people who don´t know the rules of the game. France second penalty is super clear - no doubt at all-, and after the check you can be sure there wasn´t a handball at all from the French player -even though it may look like it was at first sight-. I think the most controversial thing may be Di Maria´s penalty, mostly due the official transmission showed the scene from a really umpractical angle, making impossible to have a good sight of the situation. Once you see the full take from a good angle, it´s quite clear the referee made the right decision. Altough it´s clearly a soft foul, I think that it matches the general cryteria for penalties in this world cup and the previous one (there was a considerable increase of penalties in this last two editions, due to the referees being more strict and conceding fouls that before were only given if they were in the midfield. If you make a quick check on the penalties given this last edition, it was the same for everyone, not only for Argentina). According to FIFA oficial rules, the penalty must be given even if there is an attempt to trip a rival (in this case, there is a clear attempt, there´s no way that Dembele´s action result in anything else than fouling Di Maria, and there is a clear imprudence, not considering that he could trip Di Maria -surely due to Dembele´s lack of defensive skills, intention really doesn´t matter here-. Plus there´s not only attempt, considering there is a really clear contact, so it´s a clear penalty). Of course there is simulation from Di Maria, but exaggerating a foul it´s part of the game, always has been (different situation in the end, when Thuram clearly simulates an action that never existed). Another important thing to judge if the decision was right or not would be checking that the referee uses the same cryteria for both sides, wich also clearly happened. France first penalty it´s not very different from Di Maria´s one. The contact seems to be clearer due the position of the camera allowing to see it on an easier way, but there´s is also exaggeration from Muani -again, this is not cheating at all-, maybe more difficult to appreciate because he instantly choses to go down, while Di Maria took half a second to check if he had any clear pass. Finally, Thuram´s "penalty" it´s a clear VAR situation, but once you check it, there´s no doubt: there´s no penalty at all (he getting away smiling throws away the 1% doubt that may last after checking).
Very good explanation and great points! You could start your own referee review channel 🤓 Thank you for the thoughtful and insightful comment; very helpful for people reading to understand the context and consistency of referee decisions.
Nobody can explain why this referee stopped play when coman was on a break with more french players than Argentina in their half .nobody cause this referee admitted he must stop that counter attack otherwise Pepsi won't ever lift a world cup...
It's amazing how even with images and basic knowledge one can prove how the refs made the right decisions but even tho there is still people here crying over this. It's over guys. Believe whatever you want even If It's not true. But stop crying If your team lost.
But Di Maria is already half way down before Dembele clipped his ankle. It's different from Otamendi who kneed Muani before he collapsed. Otamendi didn't even received any card for challenge on *last attacking player* (Should've been a clear red). I guess it doesn't matter any more. When Messi told his fans to have faith in them after they lost their first game, boi he sure backed it up.

For a world cup that was heavily criticized for its refereeing, this was phenomenally done. The realization that he knew what he was doing was when he spotted Thuram's dive (karma because in the 2018 final a free kick leading to own goal came from a dive). All penalty calls were correct, all were fuck ups by the players. My only criticism is that, like most referees this world cup, he seemed shy from giving yellows, but otherwise this was concise and balanced.
I think the referee was great in this final. Personally I wouldn't have given any of the 3 penalties, I think the first 2 were soft, but I understand it's a modern penalty. The third, I think his hands are in a natural position, the laws have changed so many times that I don't know anymore, there was the silhouette and natural position, there was the moving towards the ball, but wasn't the latest one about the T-shirt line. Anyways, Montiel was turning to block a shot in that moment, his arms were in a natural position, but I understand them given. What about the Mac Allister one. The same was given for England. I think the ref didn't give that one because it was already 2 - 0
I agree with you 100% on the 3rd penalty. I disagreed with that call as I also felt he was in a natural position. When any professional football player rips a shot from point blank, it's natural for a player to flinch away and try to protect their own body parts. All this said, I do feel the referee did do a super job!
Yes that one is definitely borderline and might not have been called in some other competitions like Champions League where those handballs have been ignored. It’s an issue they have to figure out and make clearer IMO
Tbh the second penalty from France was not a penalty in my opinion, for the same reason you stated, but oh well. It's funny that a lot of people thinks that the WC was rigged for us.

Dembele clearly foult in di maria. And the haters are penaldo fans.
I don't understand why people were upset with the ref in the final 🙄 they were both clear pens.
And Thuram suddenly gets a yellow for no reason.
If the ref determines simulation, it’s an automatic YC.
@@PaulSpacey Yes, but the fact that he determines this differently for two similar dives is the problem.
France really needs to be fair. Argentina won fair and square and France needs to accept it. All argentina goals were correct and both the teams played amazingly leading to the best finals in WC history
Great comment 👏
France didn’t even play amazingly. Argentina clearly dominated entire game, France was lucky cuz Otamendi couldn’t foul him outside the box, Montiel’s arm, and Messi lost the ball which was unfortunate.
Argentina chased to win the World Cup, France chased after Argentina. That’s the moral of the game
Depends on your perspective but most neutrals would agree Argentina probably deserved to win.

@@lepancho8122 var constantly reviews plays like this but doesn't always require referee attention

Fantastic clarification video!. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
@@PaulSpacey At 0:13 there was a contact that caused Di Maria to stumble yes, it's a clear penalty. But can the move at 0:41 cause a penalty?
Wow, what a clear explanation. I kinda confused when ref pulls yl card for thuram. Thanks a lot bro. This game is one of the few games the ref crew did a perfect job.
Glad it helped, thanks for the kind words!
Great story but that’s not how refs evaluate decisions. Are you a ref or have you played the game? Genuine question.
@@PaulSpacey No I am not. However, what I'm saying about the hands seems pretty reasonable.
Dembele made contact from back if you don’t want penalty don’t make silly contact which will give the player a opportunity to go down
Di Maria's penalty was questionable.
Pushed before he was touched with the foot/leg. Enough contact for a foul but everyone has their own perspective and opinion

I could understand people believing there was preference for Messi (and by the same logic also for France) getting to finals but the idea of a "rigged" cup is just conspiracy crazies doing a number on us
No one with at least some understanding of the complexities of an event like the WC (or a 22 people sport like football) could even fathom such outlandish idea. Even less if you considered it was somehow all risked by two French pens and a penalty shootout.
The attitude of people with this mindset is mental and only gives away two things:
1. They don't understand football nor event organization
2. They're bizarrely biased against Argentina
Also, don't people find it weird that FIFA didn't gave the cup as early as 2014 to Messi? But sure, they care so much for him and for his career to fix a 3-3 game, but not a 1-0 one
Wtf is wrong with these people
All correct calls.
If you're going to defend make sure you face the ball and not your own goal.

ref was shaky like most of the other ones throughout the tournament. Clear to see who fifa and Qatar wanted in the final and it’s not that hard to see if you look at Argentina’s and Frances journey to the final.
Argentina Fanboy, please stop lying to people
Otamendi should be given a red card for his tackle, period, it was a clear contact and from behind where there was no one between goal keeper and striker, clearly obstructing goal.

Calling that Thuram's simulation is top class refereeing. Not until i saw the replay did i agree it wasn't a penalty. Top class officiating there and all round with little errors.
Amazing that the referee called it in real-time. I watched in real-time and thought it was a definite foul!
You’re right. Very good take. It’s probably not good for the sport but those are the laws as they stand for now.
@@sneakcr3144 So why did Thuram get a yellow card after they clearly impair his ability to handle the ball, without playing the ball?
Di Maria clipped his own foot
www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-12---fouls-and-misconduct
You can see here....at section 2 : Indirect Free Kick
The second condition is "impedes the progress of an opponent without any contact being made".
Marciniak was great!!
definitely! especially given it was the final with a lot of pressure.
@@Jose-sy1je But the most unbelievable thing is how people say Di Maria is a penalty and Thuram is not
Referee ruined the game. Buased towards Argentina. Otamendi no red card or even a yellow when he was the last man. Messi gets a free kick for running into a player. Messi pulls back French player to stop counter attack. No yellow. Di maria dive. penalty. Thuram dive. Yellow card. Ruined the game.
Sorry bro, but that first pen, yeah it wasn't a pen the contact was initiated bi Di Maria not Dembele
Push/pull before the leg contact. It’s minimal contact but Dembele is in a really bad position and is foolish to make the challenge IMO.
@@PaulSpacey the thing is, if we say the contact wad initiated by dembele, then just turn every corner into a penalty
You could start your own referee review channel 🤓
Thank you for the thoughtful and insightful comment; very helpful for people reading to understand the context and consistency of referee decisions.
Referee was good until he stops France two counter attacks and Otamendi red ♦️
Otamendi wasn’t a red, check Part 2 video but yes, ref could have let a couple of attacks continue, you’re right
There actually wasn’t much controversy on this game. Actually I can’t think of any. Red did a great job
Controversy in the sense that these close calls always divide opinion. So for French fans in particular, the decisions were controversial.
Thuram's action was a 100% penalty. You can't give dimaria the pen for the lightest of touches and not Thuram.
@@PaulSpacey ofc FC England gonna defend argentina
First penalty there is no contact with Di Maria, you need to use glasses
Ok I’ll order some 🥸
Thank you for clarifying my doubts!
👍
This guy is speaking facts. The ref made the right calls and wasn't biased. Idk why France Football made a petition for the final to be replayed
Great game, best team won in the end IMO
@@PaulSpacey True
Referee was so sharp and exquisite even in this sheer tensed game! Hats off to him! that's the best referring of the century
Nobody can explain why this referee stopped play when coman was on a break with more french players than Argentina in their half .nobody cause this referee admitted he must stop that counter attack otherwise Pepsi won't ever lift a world cup...
Only the ref can explain that as he makes the decision in the moment based on the circumstances he sees.
It's amazing how even with images and basic knowledge one can prove how the refs made the right decisions but even tho there is still people here crying over this.
It's over guys. Believe whatever you want even If It's not true. But stop crying If your team lost.
Good summary! 😉 this game divides opinion and everyone has their own perspective from experience so I understand some of the crying 😂

Yeah Ref was so correct that he gave Arg 5 penalties in whole world cup 🤣🤣🤣.
Is there a limit on the number of penalties you are allowed? 👀
The problem isn’t whether they’re correct decisions according to the law, it’s that most of the calls Argentina gets in favor, no other country would get. It’s disgusting.
But if they are correct calls, what’s the problem?
@@PaulSpacey Different teams/players, different criteria. It's always been an issue, not just in the world cup.
@@wicked_cool7 You forgot to mention France was playing like sh** and could only comeback because of 2 penalties. lol
obvious. it clear this cup is dirty and rigged.

@@footballvision5098 yeah not all calls right😂😂😂 even hater says it's rigged, I'm tired of this excuses 😂😂
Perfectly summarized! 👏
Fair perspective
Funny how people say Dembelé didn’t foul Di Maria but the truth is, he was having his ass handed to him. Why else would he be replaced at the 40’ min mark with no yellow card.
That’s not diving or cheating it’s part of the game lol people would make the worst excuses for this Argentina team , but when is Neymar diving or anybody else thats not with Argentina is called diving and it should be considered a yellow this video is so biased
Biased? I’m English 😅 definitely not rooting for Argentina (or France). Going down under contact is part of the game; going down with no contact is diving.
