Dembele's foul is at 2:03, what you have put in a circle as well. It is when Dembele catches the outside of Di Maria's left foot with his knee. Then Di Maria trips with his left foot on his own right heel. At 2:10 Di Maria is falling already and I think that touch does not matter any more. NOTE! You have made this more clear in the first video. I saw it as second though ;)
Thanks for the analysis 👏 yes, the touch of Dembele’s knee with Di Maria’s foot is what causes his imbalance. Prior to that his push/pull starts the whole process of the foul.
About dimaria's penalty, it is like upamecano's header, it is a question of seeing it from behind, not from the sides. It was a strange penalty because not one clear action but several subtle actions that combined with the speed at which they were going made him stumble to form the penalty (the slight push of the hand, the rubbing of the feet, the small nail).
I know I’m 7 months late but: another thing about the Upamecano handball incident. Is that even if it was a handball the Argentina players would’ve saw it and claim a handball.
Mac Allister was fouled by upamecano in the box same way England got their second penalty against france. Montiel handball a few years ago wouldn't have been given and honestly even now it doesn't look like a penalty to me. The ball was going way over and montiel was in the air with his back turned, ball hit him in the elbow.
I haven’t seen the MacAllister one, I’ll take a look. Montiel handball is debatable but current guidance says it’s probably handball based on arm position. Harsh for sure.
Montpellier was a clear penalty and handball. Yes he turned his back and dint mean it. But what he should have done is put his arm behind his back like other players or in front of his private area. That way he would never have handballed it. And it either was just gonna go over. Or maybe martinez would have saved it. But it doesn't matter as Argentina won the world cup bro
As an Argentinian, I gotta say I love this video xD! 🤣 I really liked this video because it explained every scenario detail by detail, without missing anything (excepting for Upamecano's hand touch, since it was proven it was not a hand touch so there's nothing to debate). I'd like to know in which video you explain Scszesny's penalty over Messi, I'm sure myself it wasn't called correctly but anyways I'm interested in watching your explanation!
It’s debatable for sure. Many decisions like this are because the ref makes a subjective decision based on his perspective and application of the laws. That’s why we all discuss so much!
Agree with all your observations but still think that Di Maria penalty is 50-50 at best. Argentina gets almost 1 penalty per game. It's pretty clear why. The ref must have been warned and he made a big decision early in the game.
Interesting perspective. I agree that it’s a debatable call depending on your experience, inherent bias and perspective. I believe it was a foul but that’s my perspective based on my experience. I get it that others don’t feel the same and why would they? They have completely different experiences, inherent bias and perspective.
In this world Cup most advanced technology was used, even they are putting technology inside the ball for the first time to cover all the angels, all the penalties to argentina was given as per proper football rules, you can check.Other than that European referees favouring a South American country, sounds pretty mess😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I think the leg contact is crucial in Dembele's potential foul. Seems it was the most clear penalty from all soft penalties Argentina had in this tournament.
it's always debatable when it's close like this with minor contact and bias affects the views of everyone, including me! I believe it was a penalty though based on the conditions.
I Though First That Was Upamecano Handball Because I Was Looking From an Angle That Looks Like Upamecano Touched The Ball With His Hand. Every Angle Is Diffrent. Thank You For Explaning And Also Sharing These Referee Decision!😃
Yes it definitely looked like handball initially so I understand people reacting how they did. However when watching closer, it’s clearly a header. Glad you found it helpful!
Good video.. can you please explain why a European ref was awarded the job, if an Ecuadorian or a Uruguayan ref was awarded everyone would be going crazy.. I am sure there are many refs from Asia or Africa that would do an amazing job in the finals
Thanks. Hard to say how they choose the ref but likely Marciniak was the best option. Obviously they couldn’t have a South American referee in charge of this game. He did a good job
Collina picked him, but it is right call. They couldn't pick french related or south american related referee (obviously) they needed least personal bias (Poland lost matches both to Argentina and French so there is no personal interest to help anyone) and they needed someone intimidating (to avoid game going out of control like Argentina vs Netherlands). Marcinak kinda fits all criteria and he already was well recognized referee.
As a French person, I think Poland and France are culturally so far from each other 🤷🏻 so doesn't seem like a problem to me. Uruguay is just next to Argentina though. If it were a Belgian referee, here I could see a problem, but "Europe" is very big
@@cosmicpeach7080 South America is big too if you wanna use that as an argument, main problem is FIFA is biased towards europe, and that's a fact. They could've easily chosen a NA/Asian/African ref but didn't.
It’s imposible that you say that Di maria’s penalty is penalty, and after that, say that Thuram’s penalty isn’t. It’s incredible that in the Thuram’s action you said that “For me the ref is correct”, when it’s a clearly contact. Soft but there is contact. The same with Di Maria’s penalty.
Different situations. Dembele is behind Di Maria; did you watch both videos part 1 and 2? Thuram situation is simulation but I understand some contact; however it is initiated by Thuram moving his leg across. Your perspective is different to mine, that’s normal.
In Di maria’s situation it’s visible that Dembele is cutting him off, and in Thuram’s it is completely different. Refs decision was right, and he did absolutely great job, because it was extremely difficult to make a proper decision, which he managed to do, especially without using VAR.
Thuram clearly dived and tried to make his own legs to tangle with Enzo Fernandez He even laughed afterwards and didn't complain because he knew what he did
My guess is because argentina were already leading 2-0 with one of those goals being a penalty so it would look bad on part of the referee handing out penalties all over the place for argentina. It will look like the ref is siding with only one country. In that case I think the ref would only give the penalty if it was 100% a blatant foul that prevented a clear goal scoring chance and not just incidental contact.
What about the foul Fernando committed against Coman just outside the box towards the end of the game? The ref played advantage but they never went back and showed the replay if it was inside the box or not?
I don’t remember that one; if it was a potential penalty, VAR would 100% have checked it but they don’t show it unless it’s a full review when they believe the decision should be changed
Look these analysis are so superb , thanks so much, I appreciate you alot for this one. Many critics needs to be schooled by you including some football journalist
There only one question i want to ask, if Otamendi did not receive a red because he tried to go for the ball, why he didn't even recive a yellow for making a foul as the last player standing.
you see clearly that when dembele touches di maria's leg, he's already diving, like he's already fell so that shouldn't have been a foul for me cause he's clearly simulating
Thanks for the videos, did you also notice the advantage play being denied against france around min 89? My friend who is a france fan is killing me because of that. He thinks this game was rigged lol
The ref could have let play continue. If they stop the game to give a yellow card, they cannot allow advantage so they have to make a decision of either giving a yellow or allowing play to continue if a goal is likely/possible.
@@PaulSpacey he gave a yellow, but then the same player (or maybe another one) prevented the free kick, so it should be a second yellow because the counter could have continued
tell your friend that France got 7 subs because of concussion protocols; if the game was rigged, I clearly see a tendency for the French, and not the Argentinian side (though to be 100%, the referee was right)
Different circumstances. Di Maria was from behind; impossible for France player to get the ball without fouling him. Thuram was from the front and contact was inconclusive.
@@PaulSpacey I'm a french fan and I think that's the best video I've watched about this final. I only wonder if there was foul on M'Bappé just before the second goal of Argentina. For me, it seems that the defenser doesn't play the ball and hits M'Bappé but it's difficult to find good videos...
True; most people don’t know the laws of the game. Even if you do know them, referees can still use their own discretion to apply them so we see lots of subjective calls that we all have different opinions on!
And about the DOGSO incident with otamaendi. You focus on the leg challenge but in fact he was pulling Muani for a good second or two before he fell down = red card. And that is even mentioned in the screenshot you showed from the Laws of the Game. any reason you focused only on the last frames but not the actual pulling?
Yes you are absolutely correct. If Otamendi only pulled Muani with zero leg contact afterwards, it would likely have been a red card. Because of the leg contact (where he can argue he was going for the ball and the ref agreed), then it becomes a yellow because of the penalty award and the way the laws and guidance stand on that situation.
Thanks for clarifying this. I got into a discussion about that 'subs entering the pitch' thing. I replied that this rule was obviously made to prevent potential interference with a play, not being emotional and trying to celebrate!! Lol.😅😅😅 I also think the Dembele is one of a rare case though. Ref will certainly have to rake his brain on this one. On the other hand, you can still get a foul LEGALLY since attempting to foul could be penalized, and Dembele is certainly trying to trip Di Maria with his unnatural leg position, but on the other hand, if you use common sense, it's probably safe not to be given it as well...Maybe it's really hard becoming a football ref, you would get flamed no matter what your decisions are.
Glad the rule clarification helped with your discussion! And yes, the Dembele foul is debatable and it depends on your perspective, inherent bias, past experience and opinion. It’s not a clear yes or no. I happen to think it’s a foul but I understand why others don’t 😀
@@yoshuareynaldo2295 Right, it is the final of the world cup, penalties should not be given left and right for any small contact, only for obvious ones
@@yoshuareynaldo2295 World Cup final being the most prestigious match in football referees should try their absolute best to not make game deciding decision very easily. You have to be extra careful or then what is the point of that match then. The first team who is lucky to get a slight touch will get a penalty and boom game is finished. World cup final should not depend mostly on luck. Luck should be minor part of it
Di Maria initiates the contact. His left leg goes left out of a normal running path to go find Dembele’s leg - finds it as intended - fall down - it’s a dive not a penalty. Wrong decision in the final of a world cup for a penalty call on the opening goal - game changer
@@PaulSpacey would not bother me as much if Argentina had not had so many soft penalties awarded in this world cup. The largest number of penalties any team received since 1966.
That's correct. I think even the Argentinians would not have raised this if the decision was to not award the penalty. It's such a nothing burger, terrible decision. Great match from both teams but it's insulting to the game to claim that penalty was fair.
Would love a video that shows all the yellow card not given to argentina players. For example at the end of the game why the referee whistled a foul when france was 3v2 in counter attack, instead of letting the advantage (first yellow card) and then the player prevent the free kick to be played (second yellow card). I think the biggest mistakes were on letting argentina play dirty and not giving them the yellow card they clearly deserved
Yes that’s the area I think the ref could have done better; lots of incidents where yellows should have been shown. Argentina slowed the game down in a clever way but the ref could have dealt with it better.
@@mvpcomps De Paul should have been shown a yellow in the 3rd minute for his charge in the back. Rabiot's foul on De Paul was a harsh one but he got a yellow. Cards forgotten on tactical fouls and Otamendi penal.

It is a little bit tricky at 2:47 snapshot. But actually when u’re watching video, Messi did go for the ball BEFORE Martinez touched the ball. Of course, everyone would say Martinez must get the ball before Messi, all depends how strict that referee controls and gives exception

Spot on. Great analysis. 👏
I bet you won’t show Netherlands Argentina because you know how bias that was for Argentina .
I did a video on this game. Ref was poor but for both teams.
@@PaulSpacey again you are not being honest because you have a bias over Argentina or Pepsi obviously. Netherlands were totally robbed that game.
I know I’m 7 months late but: another thing about the Upamecano handball incident. Is that even if it was a handball the Argentina players would’ve saw it and claim a handball.
Lol but it wasn’t handball so all is good 😁
@@PaulSpacey yea, I mostly referring to be people who are still claiming a handball. Probably should’ve clarified that.
Perfect analysis

As an Argentinian, I gotta say I love this video xD! 🤣
I really liked this video because it explained every scenario detail by detail, without missing anything (excepting for Upamecano's hand touch, since it was proven it was not a hand touch so there's nothing to debate).
I'd like to know in which video you explain Scszesny's penalty over Messi, I'm sure myself it wasn't called correctly but anyways I'm interested in watching your explanation!

Di Maria’s penalty is not a penalty. If it’s so highly debatable, then it probably isn’t a penalty
It’s debatable for sure. Many decisions like this are because the ref makes a subjective decision based on his perspective and application of the laws. That’s why we all discuss so much!
Great call by the ref on the last one. He was so sure it was simulation while I had to watch it in slow mo to confirm
Me too; in real-time I would have said penalty.
😄
Nice video, thanks for all the explanations

I think the leg contact is crucial in Dembele's potential foul. Seems it was the most clear penalty from all soft penalties Argentina had in this tournament.
it's always debatable when it's close like this with minor contact and bias affects the views of everyone, including me! I believe it was a penalty though based on the conditions.
It was pure penalty.
Dembele pulled d-maria's foot behind and didn't let it land on the field properly.
The dive starts before the leg was touch. There is the debate. Di Maria is a forward and got what he aimed, congrats to him
@@sebastienbearez9547 he was pulled as well
I Though First That Was Upamecano Handball Because I Was Looking From an Angle That Looks Like Upamecano Touched The Ball With His Hand.

I don’t remember the Alvarez incident. I’ll see if I can get a Cro vs Arg video up.
There's no need to analyse this. Marciniak recognized his mistake on that case.
Incredible match calls for incredible measures
Thuram clearly dived and tried to make his own legs to tangle with Enzo Fernandez
He even laughed afterwards and didn't complain because he knew what he did
You are a joke 😂
I just love how you deny everything he said without any logical reasons given 😂
Wow, that make everything so clear, thankyouvery much!
Glad it is helpful!
Good video. Can you explain why a penalty was not given to Argentina at 63' for Upamecano colliding in the box with Mac Allister?
Thanks Kevin. I’ll take a look at that incident but will need to go through full game as it doesn’t appear in highlights.
It was a shoulder push right ?
@@aurickpereira5988 it was clear penalty for me
My guess is because argentina were already leading 2-0 with one of those goals being a penalty so it would look bad on part of the referee handing out penalties all over the place for argentina. It will look like the ref is siding with only one country. In that case I think the ref would only give the penalty if it was 100% a blatant foul that prevented a clear goal scoring chance and not just incidental contact.
@@aurickpereira5988 Shoulder vs. shoulder yes, but when Player 1 uses his shoulder to push Player 2 in the back, it's foul.

There only one question i want to ask, if Otamendi did not receive a red because he tried to go for the ball, why he didn't even recive a yellow for making a foul as the last player standing.
He won’t reply
He should probably have received a yellow for the challenge but it’s not a guarantee; you don’t have to get a card if you foul in that situation.
you see clearly that when dembele touches di maria's leg, he's already diving, like he's already fell so that shouldn't have been a foul for me cause he's clearly simulating
The initial contact was before the moment you describe.
Thanks for the videos,
did you also notice the advantage play being denied against france around min 89?

If we follow the same logic from di Maria’s penalty then there’s a penalty for Thuram!

Loud and clear, people must double check the laws of the game and references before making/exaggerates and blow things out of proportion
@@PaulSpacey did he even get a yellow? 😑

Thanks for clarifying this. I got into a discussion about that 'subs entering the pitch' thing. I replied that this rule was obviously made to prevent potential interference with a play, not being emotional and trying to celebrate!! Lol.😅😅😅
I also think the Dembele is one of a rare case though.
@@PaulSpacey Yes, look, im a Messi fan, but if i were the ref, i'd probably not going to give the pen to discourage diving in the box.

Di Maria initiates the contact. His left leg goes left out of a normal running path to go find Dembele’s leg - finds it as intended - fall down - it’s a dive not a penalty. Wrong decision in the final of a world cup for a penalty call on the opening goal - game changer
This video shows how Di Maria moves his leg to the left with the intent of finding Dembele’s leg: ruclips.net/user/shortsModBRNKaGik
