Metalcore only gets a bad rap from the 2000's where metalcore became an ambiguous term also describing a lot of the Warped Tour era post-hardcore bands. In the last 10 years however, metalcore has seemingly redeemed itself and looped back around to the more traditional 90's tough guy stuff. Not to mention a lot of the Maggot Stomp death metal bands that hardcore dudes love now are a fusion of oldschool metalcore and death metal calling back to Upheaval, Odious Sanction etc.

Metalcore was my favourite metal genre growing up of a teenager in the early 2010s, which is why I still have a soft spot for it today. I grew up right between the melodic death metal inspired scene bubble bursting, and the rise of the scenecore/electronicore movement that would be a staple of Warped Tour going forward. So my favourite metalcore bands are a mix of those two kinds: Killswitch Engage, old Asking Alexandria, all the Bring Me the Horizon, I See Stars, Woe Is Me, Issues, As I Lay Dying, Miss May I and many more! Also, I do not think of Sleep Token as a metalcore band; they are their own thing.

I saw DEP on their first tour with Greg Puciato, which was also Botch's last tour (until it wasn't). All Else Failed and Darkest Hour were also on the bill. I didn't understand the connection these bands had to hardcore, or even that it was a "scene" unto itself. If you asked me at the time who my favorite bands were, I would have listed them right alongside the mishmash of Slayer, Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, Nasum, Cannibal Corpse, and Pig Destroyer I was listening to. To me it was all just "metal". I had absolutely no one else to talk to about this music at the time, so I wasn't even aware of all the various "-core" subgenres until years later. It may have been Job For A Cowboy that made me aware of the hatred more traditional metalheads have for "-core". By that time, I was on a few different online forums, and the bile was palpable.

I love metal core. It’s actually one of my favorite genres. You just have to find the right stuff because there are a lot of metal core bands that really experiment with their sound, but there are also a lot of bands who are really generic and stick with the same formula. I’m glad you mentioned trivium. Trivium is one of my favorite bands, especially their later records where they really get technical and experiment with their sound. You also can’t forget about more hard-core, sounding bands like code orange. Personally, I like how they went with more of an industrial sound on albums like underneath because in my personal opinion, I like industrial metal and industrial rock groups like fear factory, ministry, and Rammstein. there are also some really good melodic metal core bands that I really like, for example bury tomorrow, and bleed from within. So overall, there are some great metal core bands that are really doing different things with the genre and making the genre more diverse, but there are also more generic bands, like motionless and white and ice nine kills, that are not as good. I will listen to those bands if I feel like listening to something more melodic or just in a hard rock/modern mainstream metal mood, but I don’t listen to them all the time.

Never really got into metalcore. I may give it another shot and check out some of the bands you mentioned, though. I do love Bleed from Within from their fourth album (Era) onwards and their third album is decent too. I also love Raunchy, mostly their first four albums (Wasteland Discotheque in particular is awesome). However, both of these bands pull a lot of influences from other genres and subgenres, so I don't think they're necessarily very representative of what it means to be a metalcore band. I tried to get into Trivium when they were first getting quite big, but it just never clicked with me - I just didn't find their song writing that great and felt most of their songs didn't hang together very well, at least to my ears. I'm sure they've released a few more albums since then, though, so that may well have changed.

First of all, I just wanted to say that, although the negative reviews are great because they're more hilarious than anything else, positive reviews should also exist and people should watch them and, possibly so, be exposed to a new band or style of music that they might not have heard but want to explore. And frankly, that's what happened with me over the years.
My personal Metalcore journey has been split into two chapters. Chapter one was me finally getting to explore new music that my strict upbringing wouldn't allow me to, and from 2000-2004, I was there for the start of the careers of bands such as Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch Engage, Unearth, and Bleed from Within. As time went on, I stuck with some of these bands as my musical taste changed and so did some of them, namely A7X who bent all kinds of genres into one they liked, and Trivium, who had started to veer ever so close to Metallica and Disturbed worship.
Chapter two started in 2018, when I started working at a job that, while I enjoyed it, there was a lot of negative aspects that affected mentally, and the sounds of people screaming made me feel better and helped me through some really tough days. In this group, I will highlight Architects, Northlane, Alpha Wolf, BMTH, Knocked Loose, Code Orange, Jinjer, Employed to Serve, Currents, Cancer Bats, Wristmeetrazor, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, Converge, Thou (before they got really doomy), White Chapel (before they kind of sanded their edges somewhat) He Is Legend (same as before), and Ice Nine Kills (starting at Every Trick In The Book).
And so that brings me up to today where, while I do enjoy the Core bands that I have enjoyed for years (and also more recently turn of the century ones like END), I will lament that, every genre does have its high points and its low points. Every genre of music has gems and turds, it is up to the listener to pick and choose what they enjoy.
Great video though, Robert, thanks for sharing all of this with us.

There's a ton of great metalcore out there. Many of the worst modern bands just happen to be metalcore or an adjacent genre (i.e. Five Finger Death Punch, Falling in Reverse, etc.).
A bunch of shitty bands really shouldn't be used as an indictment of the genre as a whole.

  • @xangrycatmanx5104
    @xangrycatmanx5104 Месяц назад

In general, I tend to like metalcore that has its roots in hardcore/punk. Obviously, 90's metalcore is among my favourites, but even more so are bands that could be considered very popular in the metal scene are sick as well (Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, Shadows Fall and bands from the "New Wave of American Heavy Metal" generation have plenty of roots in 90's hardcore).
Where it starts to lose me is when it doesn't have that hardcore/punk connection, which you start to see in bands that came up after around 2006 or so; those bands took the good cop/bad cop vocals of a band like Killswitch, but removed the hardcore/punk element.
Another consequence of this shift is the breakdown itself; in the early days of metalcore (around 1990-2006), breakdowns were mostly used for crowd participation (moshing, singalongs, pile-ups and stage diving). Nowadays, I feel like most metalcore uses the breakdown to flex musicianship and "brutality for the sake of brutality", which, in my opinion, kind of goes against the notion that a breakdown is something meant to bring the band and audience closer together.
tldr: i like metalcore with at least a little bit of hardcore/punk, and breakdowns I can mosh to

Breakdowns are also just getting more and more basic and predictable. The big name metalcore bands spend so much time hyping up breakdowns and building up to it and then simultaneously deliver the most ham-fisted bland-as-fuck breakdowns imaginable. So lame.

I actually think metalcore is one of the more diverse subgenres of metal, its doesnt confine itself to one certain approach, like say thrash or death metal, (dont get me wrong i love those subgenres) but metalcore borrows from alot of those styles and adds a good dynamic with melodys and clean vocals. What i will say though is metalcore has kind of became a blanket term which covers a ton of different bands which sound nothing alike and really i dont think come under metalcore, as you say the nu wave of american heavy metal, bands like Chimaira and lamb of god i have heard lumped under metalcore which i dont think is the case, to me metalcore is more the melodic roots of the subgenre, your killswitch engages, early trivium, bullet for my valentine, unearth etc i guess ultimately tho that doesnt matter, but when i hear people just say oh metalcore sucks i kind of cringe abit, its almost like saying it to be cool or to get a reaction from people when in actual fact if these people gave it a chance they would realise just how good the song dynamics and the musicianship is on some of the albums they claim to hate.

I just can’t take the clean vocals choruses 99% of the time. 90’s metallic hard is pretty rad. Bands I dig are the more hardcore leaning bands like Hatebreed, but early Trivium is also pretty awesome!
And the New York Hardcore scene is in a league of its own with Agnostic Front, Madball, Judge and Merauder being favorites.
An underground record I really dig is “The Eternal Jihad” by Day of Suffering which has an almost death metal like intensity to it.
But whem melodic metalcore became a thing, it just lost its edge. Killswitch Engage has nostalgic value to me, but nothing past “As Daylight Dies” has done anything for me.
There may be good metalcore out there today, but I’m at a different place most of the time.

Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Living Sacrifice, Unearth, As I Lay Dying. All the At The Gates core and New Wave of American Heavy Metal bands. Also, Parkway Drive, Demon Hunter, August Burns Red. God Forbid. Miss May I. I would throw Lamb of God in there as a groove core type band. They have lots of breakdowns. Also Attack Attack. And A Day To Remember.
My modern core bands are Motionless in White, Spiritbox, Wage War, and Falling In Reverse. That Ronald video is the best,. But i listen to modern deathcore too.
Knocked Loose is pure hardcore to me. Not metalcore in the traditional sense. I bought the new album.

I'm not a big fan of metalcore but not because it's "scene music" or cool to dunk on it or whatever. Mainly because I feel like the punk/hardcore elements got too watered down for my taste. That being said, how about more videos evaluating different subgenres, similar to this? A little intro, what u do or don't like about it, some ideas on any particular discourse etc. That'll be interesting to spark up a conversation or two...

I feel that. As time goes on, and as metalcore gets bigger and more mainstream, the heavier and punkier sounds are sometimes toned done in favour of bigger more polished choruses. Also, I'm game. Its been fun doing videos in the past talking about hip-hop and country metal and this was no exception.

KEN Mode has been my if not top 5 Metalcore bands. I know they are primarily considered as “Noise Rock” but they are pretty Metalcore throughout their discography (more noticeable on their works before reshaping themselves on the Steve Albini-produced Success in which RIP)
They’re like the weird creation of Converge and Botch that somehow had the DNA of Jesus Lizard and Unsane into the mix. Favourite record is VOID as that album really gives more depth to the band and supports the sister album NULL really well.

Those bands are some of my favorites of all time. KSE and ABR especially. Modern bands over do the same style that architects and heart of a coward stylized years ago. Erra is good. I enjoyed their self titled but the newest one didnt hit for me. As i lay dying's Shaped by fire album is a fantastic oldschool metalcore record made with modern production (same with KSE's atonement). There is AMAZING metalcore out there. You just gotta look for it.
