Because it was left at a perfect note in a well-paced setting with no convoluted plots in the long term. Most antagonists were defeated (both Disney and non-Disney antagonists), the Disney characters of that time had their happy endings, and the main protagonists reunited with their beloved ones. There was nothing else that would have changed this ending back in 2005 (with the exception of the Secret Ending shown after the credits). But then, it would have been left to the imagination of the viewers to think future adventures for the protagonists. Then you have to take into account the future investments that would have been capitalized for the series to survive (e.g. storywriting, future developments on character and video game design, cash investment, and marketing). Otherwise, the series would have drop out from future releases and it would have been reduced to a cult-classic video game series with limited international support. Since the main series had seemingly ended on KH II back in 2005, new drafts, new stories, new protagonists, and new antagonists must be created. Otherwise, the stagnant Kingdom Hearts series would have shared the same treatment as the remakes or reboots of the Disney classic films and television series.
My childhood was pretty brutal. But the inspiration I gained from Kingdom Hearts and listening to Utada Hikaru sing Sanctuary pulled me through the moments I'd just fall apart. I just sang it to myself, and found my sanctuary in my mind and in being a writer. This game had a major impact on my life and who I wanted to be. The kind of person I wanted to be... Watching this punched my childhood right in the heart and brought what good it had to light. Leaving the pain in the dark.
I’ve played this game many times since my childhood, seen this exact cutscene dozens of times over the years… And only just now today did I notice Riku’s absurdly long thumb at 8:05
Ngl kh2 had the best ending compared to any other kh game I literally cried to see riku, sora, and Kairi together and the fact that goofy, Donald, and Mickey were there also made me cry
I remember playing this as a kid and only wanting it for the Disney characters,Action etc only to get a profound story and a beautiful message and lesson behind it. I have to be honest and say Kingdom Hearts 2 is the first JRPG..no Game to ever actually make me cry lmfao (I aint ashamed>:( ) and too this day THIS ending and Sanctuary/Passion by Utada Hikaru is the only song to touch my heart in that special place since Childhood. Kingdom Hearts 2 opened my eyes to gaming as a form of art and its only gotten better with the Games i play as I've grown up like Final Fantasy, .Hack G.U, Mass Effect,The Last of us,Uncharted,Heavy Rain,Beyond Two souls etc...i play games not just for Gameplay but now for there Story,Dialogue, Message and Emotion thanks to Kingdom Hearts 2. I will be waiting for the new adventure with my old friend Sora in Kingdom Hearts 3
Well yeah, the ending of KH3 is a set-up for the sequel, while the ending of KH2 is the end of the arc of Sora, Riku, and Kairi finding their way back to Destiny Island, the original story arc of the series.
Kingdom Hearts is more than just a game, it's an adventure and a journey filled with characters we all can relate to as we go through many trials in our lives that put our faith to the test. Sora always promised Kairi that we would return home with Riku, and he did, no matter what other twists and turns he and his friends encountered on the way. And to think I used to wanna strangle Riku the moment he betrayed Sora in the first game as if their friendship meant nothing, until I saw the rest of his story in Chain of Memories, 365/2 Days, and this game that the sudden urge to do that vanished once he realized what his actions had cost him at the loss of friends and family, driven away the moment he took the path of darkness. No wonder he didn't want to be found as he was in the form of Ansem or Xehanort's Heartless. But it was that moment he did see what his mistakes cost and did the right choice to abandon the dark path once and for all.
Even today, at years of distance, it's impossible not to be moved watching this video....age can change many things of a person, but there's something which never change: the deep bottom of our heart which define the people we are.
No matter how much time has passed, this ending always makes me cry despite it being such a happy ending. Sora has been through so much and so much time has passed, and finally he is able to return Kairi's Wayfinder like he promised...
Beating this for the first time at 11 years old and finally getting my boy Sora home meant so much to me. The series peaked here imo, it will never be this great again.
Same, I just turned 33 last month, been a fan of this series since the first time I've played kh1 when I was 12 and this ending still gets me, even if I just randomly decide to see it on youtube without even replaying the game, lol, it's just too good. I love kh2 so damn much.
One of the most satisfying endings to a game in history. Sora, Riku, and Kairi got to finally return home to their island after being separated for so long while Roxas and Namine are able to still be together due to this. Sora saying “We’re back” was what he wanted to say ever since the Heartless destroyed his world in KH1. If none of the other games that came after this existed, I would have been completely fine with. A grand finale like this comes once in a lifetime.
I love this ending so much. It remains my favorite ending to any game, even after so many years. The letter being the poem from Kingdom Hearts that i had stuck in my head for so long was such a great surprise. And when Donald and Goofy showed up, i just flipped. So good, just so good. "You're home" *Tears all over my face*
@@YuukiHyuuga15 Before kingdom hearts three I felt sorry for Roxas, because he had to deal with the fact that he wasn't real and his character arc should had ended with him accept that at the beginning of kingdom hearts two, so that's life we as people have to accept something that we can't change and grow from that, but since they brought him back it's like we don't have to accept anything. This was actually the perfect ending for the series. Everything that came afterwards, the spin offs and KH3, are all just a fever dream. Sometimes simple is better. Convoluted for the sake of it ends up ruining a good story.
Gotta love how Nomura made an ending good enough that if the series stopped right there it would be a nice book ending to the saga, the story ends where it begun.
The series ended here. We lost many great voiced actors and some of the old ones are just being voice directed wrong to the point it sounds like they have no charm anymore. I wish I could hug Donald and Goofy. It seemed like a pleasant feeling.

The feels.. the memories.. Kingdom Hearts is truly the best. It's hard to try to express my absolute love for this series. It really gets to me.
Guy:Welcome to the salty spatoon how tough are ya?
Me: I saw the ending of kingdom hearts 1 and 2 and only cried for 20 minutes
Guy: come right in!
Cried for five.
***** didnt cry
I cried for 5-10 minutes on this ending when I first saw it; and that's actually the truth
I beat Ansem Riku when I was five, after my hundredth time, and sat through Sora's Sacrifice, and I only cried for an hour and a half(mind you, I was five)
Best comment I've ever seen.
this game had one of the best graphics on a ps2 game
Brazilianloko yes
i like how kairi and sora have such similar eye colors..shows they have similar souls
after completing KH3, I think I would've been totally content with this being the final ending. Why was this game perfect...
Because it was well paced, not too convoluted and the Disney worlds had a clearer goal in this one.
Otherwise, the stagnant Kingdom Hearts series would have shared the same treatment as the remakes or reboots of the Disney classic films and television series.
one of the best ending sequences of any game... ever. peak Kingdom Hearts
the namine and roxas scene always gives me feels T_T
My childhood was pretty brutal. But the inspiration I gained from Kingdom Hearts and listening to Utada Hikaru sing Sanctuary pulled me through the moments I'd just fall apart. I just sang it to myself, and found my sanctuary in my mind and in being a writer. This game had a major impact on my life and who I wanted to be. The kind of person I wanted to be... Watching this punched my childhood right in the heart and brought what good it had to light. Leaving the pain in the dark.
Revisit this ending... after finishing kingdom hearts 3... WHY IS THIS ENDING BETTER WTF SQUARE ENIX
No it isn't.
Patrick Claudino yes it is...
@@6ixgoat746 Both are good.
they look so much older in kh2 than 3
because this one has nostalgia
I’ve played this game many times since my childhood, seen this exact cutscene dozens of times over the years…
And only just now today did I notice Riku’s absurdly long thumb at 8:05
Ngl kh2 had the best ending compared to any other kh game I literally cried to see riku, sora, and Kairi together and the fact that goofy, Donald, and Mickey were there also made me cry
@Elijah C yeah that one was sad
I absolutely love the way Goofy and Donald ran straight for Sora, and Mickey literally jumped right into Riku's arms 😭😭😭
This felt more conclusive than kh3
It should have been where the series ended
@@TheNadroj10 I think it should’ve been the end of Sora’s story.
🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
....don't cry.....
*Tears appear*
Dam it. It begins
bradlie1 you wouldn't happen to be a Percy Jackson fan would you?
Why would you build a dam, are there that many tears
Riku has long white hair
and glowing green eyes...
He can walk through walls, disappear and fly?
Are u guys referencing Danny phantom lol
***** and when he knew what he had to do he had to stop the heartless that were comin through he's here to fight for me and you!
Is it more or does he remind me of kadaaj guys in FF7? I mean white hair and black outfit (org. 13 outfit)
floooooooooooooooood *Laughs and then sobs.* Oh my god that was so good.
No matter how much time has passed, this ending always makes me cry despite it being such a happy ending. Sora has been through so much and so much time has passed, and finally he is able to return Kairi's Wayfinder like he promised...
still makes me tear up a bit, even now
same here
i just hope that KH3 is as good as this because the only one that was as good as KH2 was birth by sleep
yup me either
I love dat song, sanctuary
When Sora's and Kairi's hands meet ....... I CRY.
if the game ended like this i would've been completely fine w/it ngl.
I second this
Beating this for the first time at 11 years old and finally getting my boy Sora home meant so much to me. The series peaked here imo, it will never be this great again.
God damn it... even as a 30yr old this still kills me every time
Same, I just turned 33 last month, been a fan of this series since the first time I've played kh1 when I was 12 and this ending still gets me, even if I just randomly decide to see it on youtube without even replaying the game, lol, it's just too good. I love kh2 so damn much.
I cry so bad 😢when Donald and goofy hug sora it's so sweet ❤️
One of the most satisfying endings to a game in history. Sora, Riku, and Kairi got to finally return home to their island after being separated for so long while Roxas and Namine are able to still be together due to this. Sora saying “We’re back” was what he wanted to say ever since the Heartless destroyed his world in KH1. If none of the other games that came after this existed, I would have been completely fine with. A grand finale like this comes once in a lifetime.
And they made the bad ending for KH3 :/
I love this ending so much. It remains my favorite ending to any game, even after so many years.
The letter being the poem from Kingdom Hearts that i had stuck in my head for so long was such a great surprise. And when Donald and Goofy showed up, i just flipped. So good, just so good.
"You're home" *Tears all over my face*
Im so hard to make cry. But this literally destroyed me.
WHO ELSE KEPT REPLAYING THIS ?? 😢😭
+Son Of Anarchy Me everything i listen to thissong in pandora 😭😭
+Lizzy “Lizabethx3” Rogerz *on
***** 😭😭😭😭
Everyday until KH3 dropped.
I don't think they should have brought Roxas back because it weakens the emotional impact you get from his story.
I strongly agree with this.
How come
@@YuukiHyuuga15 Before kingdom hearts three I felt sorry for Roxas, because he had to deal with the fact that he wasn't real and his character arc should had ended with him accept that at the beginning of kingdom hearts two, so that's life we as people have to accept something that we can't change and grow from that, but since they brought him back it's like we don't have to accept anything. As a result I don't have the same emotional impact about Roxas as I did before.
@@YuukiHyuuga15 Like at the very last battle between Sora and Roxas in re:coded you truly feel what Roxas is going through before and after the fight, specially when he tells Sora I going to show you what real hurt feels like.
@@euclideania2888 I don't see why his storyline had to end tragically though, it's an option, but he still suffered to get to the point where he can finally be a person in kh3.
i can't understand why being a happy ending i always feels sad and start crying
feel*
alvaro sanchez its bittersweet
@@silversauceran I get what you're saying, but this ending isnt bittersweet.
Also 2 more DAYS!!!
@@user-fn4ds7zm1i It kind of is considering roxas, naminé, and axel
For me this is the true ending for Kingdom Hearts.
Same brother. When Donald and Goofy rush in and dogpile Sora it hits my inner child fr. Gets me emotional.
The golden age of the video games right here...
Riku: Sora?
Sora: Hmm?
Riku: I think it's for you.
Sora: *Reads* You've been invited to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
if you aren't touched by this game, then you have no heart or feelings cuz this is truly the best gam ever brought to man. Everytime I hear the end credit song I tear up...I am 5'11, 201 pound guy that happens to be very athletic. If I am touched by something like this, any true gamer would be as well. :) :') *sniff* (tearing up cuz so many childhood memories coming up)
i agree
***** yea, it's hard to not cry at the ending of a KH game, but especially the console versions
***** Yeah, Kingdom Hearts really touches your heart, like it did mine. ^_^
I love kh so much
Yeah, no lie. I well up every time I see the endings too. Every time.
KH2 would’ve been the best way to end the series. I mean this ending is perfect and one of The best endings. It is a shame things got stretched out and continued far along after they should have.
Where the hell are parents?
Lol
+Sergiiooo14 yas yeah and?
sora's mom still has his dinner
+B3NN3TT they only are mentioned once before Destiny Islands was swallowed by darkness. his mom still has his dinner XD
sora's mom is going to be sitting at that table.
"eat your dinner.
NOW
@5:43 is where it starts getting good :)
But for me the tears start to pour out when Sora transforms into Roxas for a second and Kairi into Namine
Can someone explain that?
it's their respective nobodies :)
Damn, kh is deep lol
I really like when Sora and riku go through the light, lol shit was a dope. Then Sora giving back the good luck charm kairi have him in kh 1 made me tear up
My fav part is where Goofy and Donald throw themselves at Sora ;_;
OH MY GAWD. 7:35 is when the feels start. The love, the friendship, the waiting, the music, the story, all the games and moments that led up to this very moment. FEELS. :,)
HD quality *cries* This is beautiful. *breaks down crying*
This is where they should have stopped. Anything past this was just crazy and too confusing.
Look at you Cory all grown up now. Man that’s crazy.
@@everydaynine_2282 wtf
Soras face lightss up when he sees Kairi and swims towards her running = tearing up
goofy donald mickey re unite with everyone = smile and tearing up
"We- we're back"... "you're home"... = Dont cry dont cry dont cry
Gives Kairi back her lucky charm = CRY A LOT
We should take a moment to appreciate this gem that managed to evade RUclips’s copyright strike bomb.
Better ending than Kingdom Hearts 3, that's for sure.
lol fr, but Idk I think KH2 was way better
Always gotta be that one guy who bitches about everything
I have to agree with you on that
All we fans wanted was a happy ending and a fuc@@ing KISS after 10 years of w8 ... but no, they decided to make Sora dissapear
WHEN IT SHOWS ROXAS I JUST DIE FROM TEARS QWQ
forever a classic memory
The Roxas and Namine fade away hit harder than anything KH3 did.
I prefer this ending than the ending of Kingdom Hearts 3.
KH3 sucks, the ending is so bad
KH3 was amazing. It was about resolution.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will have the most touching ending I bet
I hope it makes me cry ;p and I've never said that about a game lol
ik how u fell bro

I really hope the series ends with KF3. I waited WAY too long for the finale.
"We're back!"
"You're home."
All these years and that still gives me tears.
Sora : We’re... we’re in Smash
Kairi : You’re home
The series could have ended here (without the after credits scenes) and nobody would have complained.
I still remember the night I beat this game, who was around, and how excited I was to see this ending
imagine at the ending of KH2, while sora and riku are leaving the realm
of darkness, aqua almost reaches them, but collapses on the beach as the
door closes. where was she at this point?
James OG364 She was probably sleeping.
The way kairi says "you're home" feels so genuine, god I enjoyed kh3's ending so, so much, and I like it more storywise, but this one is the best executed one
As I scroll down the comments, I'm glad to learn I'm not the only one who cries while watching this. Donald is just too frigging cute. Can't wait for KH3!
8:56 when sora grabbed her hand is where it got me in my feelings 😭😭 I love this game and ending. So beautiful
Through the years I cry every single time
“You’re home” 🥺❤️
Riku has something else that Sora doesn't...height.
yeah but Sora also has something else that Riku doesn't.....Kairi ;)
@@mr.hawklingiii8739 Big oof
Cried at the ending the first time, haven't seen this scene in years, got e crying at 31yrs old. It's a perfect ending, everything is just so perfectly beautiful about it.
After a long fought battle and endearing memories. Soru, Riku, and jiminy cricket return to the realm of light.
Don't worry, I'm 33 and I replay kh2 a lot and still cry every single time, lol. 100% agree that the ending is perfect, the direction, the music, the meaning, the feels, even the credits are amazing.
2020 and this ending still make me feel some type of way
Honestly I would have been fine with the series ending here. The game and the ending was just that good. This ending just makes me smile and brings happy tears to my eyes. Kingdom Hearts 2 is the best of the series and it still holds up to this day for me.
That scene where it goes to a simple piano note and show Roxas through Sora and Namine through Kairi smiling at each other, really gets me emotional!
22:30 Good News Sora, you're invited to the Smash Bros, and they need you're help. The world has been filled with Darkness.
Someone seriously need to make an edit with this ending (The King's Letter) and Sora's entrance into Smash
The series ended here. We lost many great voiced actors and some of the old ones are just being voice directed wrong to the point it sounds like they have no charm anymore. I wish I could hug Donald and Goofy. It seemed like a pleasant feeling.
This is where the series ended for me.
guys can you believe that there was no youtube back then and i had to finish the final boss again and again to see and listen to that beautiful ending...?
Watching this game is almost like having real friends
This has the best ending of all the games
ffx>>>>
Roxas best anime/manga/tv show/video game/board game/movie/novel/short story/excerpt/sitcom/radio show Character. hands down.
He's simply the best. When he says, "Looks like my summer vacation is over..." at the end of the intro, I just burst into tears.
Did anyone else get goosbumbs when kairi yelled "SORA RIKU!"
more like... the whole video lol
what about when the ending comes on?!?! Goosebumps all over.
Jeff Posaski especially the music :o
hungryzombies64 true!!!!
The part that gave me goosebumps was when Donald, Goofy, and Mickey run from behind Kairi.
Man, even if there wasn't a KH3, this ending would have been perfect.
1. nice
2. the note being read while a sad dearly beloved plays in the background and sora, kairi, and riku are reunited is the peak of this series
