I had my 65th birthday yesterday, and this song holds more significance for me with every year that passes. It captures perfectly the wistfulness and sense of passing time, not only of the Local Hero film, but of life itself. It's now been over 30 years since that film came out, and while it (and most Bill Forsyth films) remain relevant and fresh today, this song never fails to stir that bittersweet feeling of regret and longing for past events, both good and bad. Mark Knopfler himself singlehandedly saved guitar music in the seventies, but this song should be recognized as his greatest sole achievement. Thanks Mark.

Why, why do a bunch of talentless concertgoers always think that it's a good idea to clap along with the musicians everyone else paid good money to hear?
There are clap-along songs. This is not one of them.
Have you ever been to a rock concert? Have you ever met any members of a rock band? Only, the people who have "paid good money" to go to a rock concert will clap and sing along to their favourite band and their favourite band would be devastated if they didn't. I guess you are more comfortable living in your bedroom.
It’s just simply true. If you’re a true fan of MK you would know not to “try” to clap on this particular song.
