Just another EXCELLENT Tutorial on keyboard problems. Gary, I'm glad you didn't just suggest to throw away the keyboard ab go buy a new one. That solution is always the easiest in our disposable culture.
You superstar! My old Mac was switched off for ages and neither keyboard or mouse would connect. Plugged both into the Mac, and away they go! Thank you so much!
Thank you, Gary! The second option worked perfectly for me, and now my keyboard is functioning flawlessly. I had watched many videos before, but yours was absolutely spot-on and incredibly helpful. I truly appreciate the effort you put into creating such a fantastic tutorial!
This was incredibly helpful. I cannot find words to express how professional and knowledgeable this showcased. Please keep making videos like these. Idiots like me need this! Thank you.
That works to get rid of the crumbs and dust that find their way in. Using a can of air to blow into the keyboard when the keyboard is upside down can work (just don't hold the can of air upside down when using it; that is a trick used to clear out fluids in the nozzle of a paint sprayer, but it also ejects particles from a can of air).
Thanks for troubleshooting. It's not a dirty key as I protect my keyboard with a cover. Additionally, I had a whole new key installed professionally. Waste of my time and money!
Thanks alot, didn’t realise one of the settings led the keyboard to behave differently and not responding. Changed the settings and voila it started working ❤
GREAT ADVICE!! ONE OF THE VERY BEST VIDEO'S I'VE SEEN IN A VERY LONG TIME. Funny bc my issue was the cap lock stopped working. I called and was on the phone with apple for 3.5 hours. But they didn't help me one bit. I just had this gut feeling that this happened when a auto update was done in the middle of the night. So I opted to sit it out and wait and wa-la after about a good month there was a newer update. So I did do that update and now the cap lock works perfectly. Go figure!
Thank you!! for the "Mouse Key" explanation. You saved me another trip to the Apple store! I'm still curious as to how the pointer control got turned on , but I'm so glad for the fix.
Omg the mouse key was turned on some how. I was freaking out, I thought my keyboard was broken. This is the only video here on RUclips that actually explains how to fix it. Thank you soooooo much.
Thank you so so so much, sir. This really helped me. I was literally so much stressed that I messed up with my laptop, but just because of you now, I am okay. Thank you so much again.
Great video. I was about to give up on fixing my keyboard; And than I came across this video. The mouse pointer control feature was on preventing proper functioning. After turning off, everything changed. I got my keyboard back to work. THANK YOU.
Really amazing!!!! I have been facing the issue with the keyboard buttons, even apple support haven't helped me but now it resolved by this video. Thanks so much!!!!!
Sir I owe you a big one really I was wondering now what to do and then I saw your video it really works.... Genuinely you have earned a big respect from me...
thank you so very much for your video. i was having troubles with my ipad and external keyboard. the right side of the keyboard kept tuning into the mouse pointer and i did not know how to fix it. i just followed your instructions on accessibility part and it solved my problem
Thank You Sir! Very helpful Video, Although my problem of my keyboard volume, brightness and the whole row isn't working. I am also not seeing the option for the f1,f2 in keyboard like your video. I am looking through your channel and it is helping me understand more about mac then ever before. Thank you!
@@macmost Hey i have mac Os catalina version 10.15.7 it is 27inch 1tb 32gb ram mac, I cant seem to find any option that allows me to use those buttons. I also tried your suggestions but it only pulls up for command, option, capital keys, not what I am looking for, I wonder if its not supported on my 2012 mac, maybe that's why I am not seeing that option
@@RedditRapster So you have a 27-inch iMac, not a MacBook, correct? Way back in Catalina it would be System Preferences, Keyboard and then look around. I can't remember exactly where it is since things have changed quite a bit since then. But this video is old enough it may help: ruclips.net/video/LjgNJuxboRs/видео.html
Oh my God Gary you are the best! pressing the option key five times was on which I did not know. I was using Final Cut Pro and trying to add a marker by using options + M, it wasn’t working. Must’ve tried it five times. I just did an update and this started. Needless to say I was a “little” concerned. Thank God it was something simple. Thank you! God bless!!!
I have an older keyboard for my Mac that you had to plug in. A few months ago it started typing endless periods. I then bought a new magic keyboard and it worked fine, so I'm sure that the older keyboard developed a hardware problem. Maybe some dirt got into the period key? The magic keyboard is so nice that I won't go back to the old one anyway.
"Sticky" keys are often the result of a build up of lotion from the hands leaking into the mechanics. It could also be lint piling up inside the key. And it could be just a failing spring that is supposed to return the key to its proper height.
2017 MacPro 17" Laptop, My "Return" keys were not working on both the internal & wireless external apple keyboards. I watched the whole video, nothing so far until I tried reseting the NVRAM - Now All return keys work!!! 😁 Thank you
my left option key stopped working but the right one works...but this helped me make the control key do option key command until i can figure out why it stopped working. thank you! wow this is so helpful!! I plugged in another keyboard and the key works fine there...getting somewhere! thank you!!
Hey Gary thanks for sharing this! When I was a new MAC user a few years ago, I turned on Mouse keys! Don’t know how I did it! I figured that it was something I did, and sure enough it was! How ever I could not sign on to my MAC because my pass word was in the key arrangement! Had to troubleshoot on my phone via internet!! A great lesson!! 😊
You absolutely saved me bro... amazing and v useful.. cheers .. problem solved and i thought that my keyboard has some problem while i just bought macbook pro
Thank you! 2 days frustration, I hour Apple support - next stop Apple Store for service. Then your video - back up and running in 8 minutes. Tears in my eyes, thank you ❤
I sure appreciated finding out how to fix my keyboard, when it did not show various letters, like a, k I, o, u, etc. I got that mouse keys option turned off, though I never turned it on that I recall. Thanks so much!
Nice job! Saved my Magic Keyboard. On a iMac, I found it difficult to delete the 'other' keyboard. It needs the +/- action on the bottom left of the 'Input Sources' panel.
Thanks for all these videos! Quick question. Should I worry that the WORD "RUclips" (top left corner) in Safari is Greyed out? The Red and White button is still there and the page is working well. Thanks again! Ed S.
@@macmost Thanks for the reply! Internet paranoia I guess. This only happens in Safari where the word "RUclips" is greyed out. The word "RUclips" (top left corner) in both Chrome and FireFox is not greyed out. Thanks again for your advice! I've learned so much from your videos.
Thank you for showing me how to change modifier keys. I'm temporarily using a windows keyboard that was driving me nuts! Now it acts like a Mac keyboard. Thank You.
The info on keyboard settings was very helpful, thanks! However sending us to an Apple page instead of showing us how to clean the keyboard was a fail.... :)
Late iMac 2013 running open core legacy patcher 1.5.0. Keyboard works and then stops working. Replaced a Bluetooth keyboard with a wired keyboard. But issue persists - keyboard works for a few minutes and then stops. Wired mouse works without issue. Tried all these steps. Updated to the new open core legacy patcher 2.0 and also MacOS 6:49 14.7… Thinking it’s an open core issue?
Good video Gary. Thanks. Somehow I had Mouse Keys and Sticky Keys turned on when I first rebooted after updating MacOS yesterday. Didn’t have an external usb keyboard handy but did get about 5 secs after rebooting to enter my “mouse keys”. Took a couple of goes but got there. The “in MacOS” options of pressing the Option Key 5 times did not work, nor did Shift 5 times, nor did Option Command F5. Almost had to go back to the Apple Store or to Erase All Content and start afresh. Luckily your video pointed me in the right direction of things to try. Many thanks. Keep up the good work. ❤
Thank you Gary. I am experiencing a weird situation with my Macbook air M1 lately. I use Logic Pro for music composition and for some reason my keyboard shortcuts are not responding like they used to anymore in Logic Pro. For example, in logic when you press the key C it normally triggers the cycle fonction in the main window and when you press the return key it brings your locator back to the beginning of a track. Now when I hit the return key there nothing happening and the C key is playing the track instead of opening or closing the cycle mode. These sre the 2 only shortcuts not doing what they are normally doing and I don't know how to reset it bakc to the logic shortcuts settings.
omg! Thank you so much! I literally have 4 keypads that I thought were broken. I just couldn't understand how they could all "break' the same way. 'mouse key toggle' was the answer. And all these years I was just buying a new keyboard 🤪😂. thank goodness I didn't just just recycle them thinking they were useless.
OMG, this sticky keys thing is awesome. Never heard about it before, but definitely going to use it. Thanks Gary for pointing out another cool feature :)

Turning the keyboard upside down and tapping it at various angles can get rid of some obstructive grit from under troublesome keys.
That works to get rid of the crumbs and dust that find their way in.
