It's really convenient to have Fabien Frankel's looks - sort of mediterranean look (like Oscar Isaak). You can be casted pretty much in ANY time of movie, because you are white, muslim, latino at the same time.

1:43, one tape audition and nailed it. They replaced Ty Tenant with this actor. I wonder why Ty was recast, though?! Ty didn't do a bad job. Maybe they just wanted to make the time jump more obvious? Maybe he gave a stronger Aegon performance and time was vital to replace Ty? The big jarring jump for me though was the height difference between the actors. Ty is 5ft10, I believe Tom Glynn-Carney is about 5ft8, maybe 5ft10 too but its hard to tell, he looks shorter though.
They didn't “replaced” Ty Tenant. They didn't “recast”. It was really meant to have TWO actors for Aegon (teen and older version) in season 1 like what they did with other characters like Rhaenyra, Alicent, Aemond, Helaena, Jace, etc. Tom is the MAIN Aegon II (coz clearly, his version is what we will see until the end of the series) and I believe he was casted first like how Emma D'arcy was casted first before Milly Alcock. Kate Rhodes (the casting director of HOTD) has an interview, which you can watch here on youtube, where she talked about the casting process for the HOTD actors/characters. She clearly wanted Tom to play Aegon so much and she told Ryan and Miguel about him being the perfect actor for Aegon (which maybe also explains why his audition was very straightforward and fast). FUN FACT: Before HOTD, Ty Tenant already played as the younger version of Tom Glynn-Carney's character in the movie “Tolkien” so maybe that's one of the factors why they casted Ty as younger Aegon.
