Thank you! Yes we have seen many aquaponic farms, unfortunately due to Environmental restrictions in Canada, they are not applicable to a farm of our size at this point in time. It would be wonderful, but it is something that will need to be recognized first.
The yield widely depends on water, in our case we have permits to take 3750 gallons per minute. We have changed alot of our production from "production" sized fish to fingerlings 15-60grams. At this facility we produce roughly 2m a year.
@aliuzbekistan Hey- this is my Dad's farm in the video. The temperature of the water can range from 8 degrees celsius to 18 degrees. Oxygen is supplied naturally in the water, but we try and increase with simple blowers + oxygen stones. The 2-foot waterfalls every 100 feet also add some oxygen. The drop every 100 feet also provides some areas for the manure to gather, which we suck up and put on our front field. Fish are fed by hand, as well as with the green fiber-glass feeders.

It all depends on the grade that you want. This type of grading is not done right before the fish are chosen. It is usually done as much as 24 hours ahead of time, given the water flow, fish naturally want to go upstream therefore it is very effective. However when you want a very specific grade, we do it with the grid and then hand sort. To put the fish through a machine can be stressful, and is quite costly for our operation.
Your farm is incredible. Have you seen any aquaponic farms? They get massive crop growth and the crops clean the water and in turn the fish excrement feeds the crops.
Over crowding can be a major issue, it is directly related to the size of fish you would grow and what temperature your water is. Our raceways are 50 ft x 8 ft x 3ft deep. We generally run at the equivalent of 6000 pounds per raceway in the summer. More in the winter, upto 8000 lbs. But again dependent on size of fish, wht kind of growth you want to put on etc.
It all depends on what you would like to do in fish farming. I have both staff that have gone to university for the aquaculture technician program, as well as staff that have learned through experience and those that are just learning with us.
My goodness, this was 12 years ago and hearing about the permit process sounds worse than death. I can't even imagine what it's like now. Kudos to you for sticking through the process. I am in the initial planning stage of a private trout raceway off a creek. This video was definitely helpful; especially with you being in a colder climate and able to handle it. Any tips on keeping things from freezing? Like burying intake pipes I am guessing.
Hello Arman, 1. We do not have a yearly average per say, our lowest water temperature coming from the creek is about 0.5 C, highest being 26 C. In our wells we average 9C for 6 months of the year and 13C for the rest of the year. 2. We do alot of fish feeding by hand however, since fish are willing to eat 24 hours a day they are supplemented with demand feeders. 3. Please explain FCR
i wish i were your neighbor :) fish waste is one of the highest quality organic fertilizer i have used. you could probably market the dehydrated fish waste at garden centers :) also in my spin filter i have a good layer of active carbon that helps clean the water and it makes the single most efficient multipurpose soil amendment known to man. bio char(active carbon) is relatively easy to make and provides energy in various forms and holds carbon long term in the ground..

Thanks for the video! I am also located in Ontario. I was wondering if it is possible to stock a pond with rainbows that is being constantly fed by an underground artesian well? The pond is round with a 40 M diameter. Would it be possible to stock enough fish in this pond for my families personal consumption or would the freezing of it over winter cause all life in it to die? Lastly, is it possible to stock a small private 3 acre lake with rainbows, and use it for personal consumption year round. The reason for the questions is that a property I am thinking of buying has these two features on it. I have an aim for being as self sufficient as possible. Thanks again!

Yes we raise fish for human consumption. They are processed through licensed facilities here in Ontario. If you would like more details you may send a message and I would be more than happy to pass on the information. As for timing, there are a lot of factors. Such as temperature, feed conversion, and the size that you consider "Market Size". Our general rule of thumb is one year, one pound.
You talk about over crowding is there a ratio gallons to fish is it by pound by inches or what. I have a tank that is about 70ft by 15ft by 5ft deep how many could be raised in a tank that size?

That is very dependent on the environment and food supply. in rainbow trout typically 1-4 inches could take as long as a year or as short as 8 months. 6 inches would take typically 2-3 months more.

There are fish farms in England, all you have to do is check them out. Many fish farms do not advertise freely due to public misconceptions about their practices.

We are pretty fortunate here. There have only been 2 cases of red mouth in Ontario this year and both were found only in government hatcheries with wild fish stocks. It has not been a problem for us**yet. Vaccines are not yet used here either
I'd turn that pond into a giant aquaponics system and have crops growing along side it also clams would help out with filtration put them in sack with the fish
Fish have been our main focus so far. Who knows what the future could bring for us in aquaponics??? We do have a sizeable population of snails that act much the same as clams in the filtration side of things.
I suggest a job with fish farming for anyone who enjoys working with fish and also likes diversity. There are many facets to working on a fish farm. Our youngest employee has been 14 years old.
I wouldn't recommend salmon, a trout or bass may be better. It takes a bit of work to get them into the pond but once they are there its not too hard. If you have a good food source for them all you need to watch is predators.
Dont you find that pushing a sized grid through the raceway you may not get all the small fish swim through your grid, so really its not a very good grade? it would be much better to put every single fish through a grading machine such as a faivre helios.

We use 3000gpm from the river, all of which goes right back in the river. We also have 2 deep wells that also then flow into the river (water which was not originally from the river system) also where the farm is built sits on many shallow aquifers, which we utilize for our early rearing and broodstock. Basically we use 3000gpm from the river, 120gpm from wells and 350gpm from the aquifers, meaning we put back 3470gpm to the river.

Horrible fish culture practices! The more you handle the sac fry and fingerlings the poorer their growth performance. Tray incubators product small fry which perform poorer than fry from deep matrix incubators. Redd Zone "Best Fry" incubators allow for "Swim Out" fry that feed better and grow faster. Redd Zones Water Spike oxygenates the ponds for maximum growth rates. Too bad your operation is so antiquated.
I purchased fish last spring, you agree I was overcharged, You, on two occasions promised to send me a refund. I will not be buying fish until you make good on your promise. Caveat Emptor !

I believe that FCR is the Feed Conversion Ratio. How much food will it take to get the fish to one pound. In Southern Idaho, average FCR is 1:1.
