Aged cheese, my good lord. That jam Land's End had me crying tears of happiness, love when good music could do that.. I just gave Kreutzman a standing ovation in my living room, 16 years after this happened.

This was IMO their best era by far from 2001-2005, right as they started transitioning from mostly a bluegrass band to more of a jam band. They had the perfect mix of bluegrass jam band electronic sound that was original and one of a kind.
I feel lucky being able to catch about 50 SCI shows from '01-'05 touring around the country during the early 2000's as a young man in my late teens/early 20's seeing a few hundred Phish, SCI, Moe, STS9, Umprheys, YMSB, the Dead/Lesh n friends/Ratdog, shows and to me SCI was the place to be during that time. They were in their musical creative Prime they played with passion and soul every show and had the scene with the best following made of family who were all people creating a vibe of positive, love, and acceptance no matter what part of the country you were in, there was none of that shady negativity with the ratty lot kids or nitrous mafia that was centered around the drugs and money game that was evident at nearly every other lot scene, or the petty headier than thou narcissism cause you didn't have dreads, an OG Be Good Family lot shirt, or your GD family wings pin meant you were just some crusty to sell some shitty beaster, bunk ass doses, or fake ass Sassafrass molly, you were always accepted regardless if it was your 1st show or 501st at a Cheese show. Oh how I miss the good old days!!

i agree with everything you said.. I first saw them in 03 and was accepted by everyone in the crowd..i distinctly remember an usual amount of young children and babies regarding the family atmosphere.. granted I wouldn't take my young child to a show but that's just me.....the show was a straight up hoe down....Nershi took his shoes and socks off at the beginning and I knew this was about to be a cool show..fast forward 12 years to the last time I saw them and I felt it lacked an identiy….alot of kang trying to be trey and way too many peaks that became repetitive....bottom line 02-03 cheese cant be beat

Early Cheese Tour was where it was at, 100%. Times were simpler 20 years ago, that’s for sure, and the music spoke volumes. When Phish went on hiatus, other bands stepped up big time. Panic, Biscuits and Moe were all firing on full cylinders, while Cheese was literally creating their own new sound. It was the best time to be in the scene, no doubt. Those early Bonnaroo years can’t be touched and all of the bands prospered heavily due to that exposure from it every summer. The scene was still small yet felt like family in some aspects. No iPhones or social media to be a constant distraction, just everyone living in the moment of true musical beauty. Definitely miss those times. 100%.

I probably knew you back in the day... We used to make these crazy sunglasses and pass them out. Kyle used to wear them on stage sometimes. You're right, those were some of the best years in my opinion.

I used to see shows like this in the local bar ( 5 dollar cover charge, free before 7pm.) with the Volunteers, later to become the Zen Tricksters. They always had great jams with the crowd dancing our asses off. The best cover band of the Grateful Dead and that kind of music. The lead guitarist was so good that he now plays with the Dark Star Orchestra. Can't see shows like that anymore and certainly not for 5 bucks.

Interesting fun fact/trivia: This performance of Rivertrance is available as a music video in iTunes. It makes a great gift for people that aren't familiar with Cheese

Seemed like during Rhythm of the Road Nersh got a little lost during his solo (see the way he ended it), but then Kyle swooped in to save the jam with an amazing piano buildup that got everyone back on the same page before frying our faces with that amazing organ solo. I love hearing old Cheese and finding moments like this, where a jam starts falling apart but then one of them just pulls it back together.

    • @Kimock7Autism

+kind2311 could not agree more. In my experience, filmmakers and film editors are independent contractors typically unfamiliar with the music and guitar solos.........they really don't care. It is a sad reality the style of concert films are typically very JUMPY from instrument to instrument constantly moving........and then there's PHISH webcasts which are perfection.
