I have always wondered whether this hidden message was automatically activated (because HAL was dismembered, and this was actually a planned part of the expected protocol to dismember HAL, once the team reached Jupiter space), or whether HAL, in one last gift to his human creators, decided to let Bowman know the truth--so with one of HAL's last decisions it could make before dying, it activated this message. Apparently the book is pretty clear that HAL had two commands "keep the crew informed about all neccessary mission information" and "keep this informational video a secret from the crew until the arrival at Jupiter" so he had a serious malfunction and decided the only way to complete both tasks simultaneously was to end the lives of the crew, keeping the message secret was deemed top priority and he didn't have the ability to realize both commands could be possible if HAL just waited until they arrived at Jupiter... An obvious solution of handing two simple commands by any human, but not by a machine like HAL... Those orders required temporary lying/not telling the entire truth about the mission, which was an inconceivable notion and would go directly against a command given to HAL, a machine that could only use logic, not emotion or understanding of nuances that humans are born with, even though HAL can study and replicate human thinking it does not actually possess that ability in full... Basically the commander doing normal human thinking for security reasons and passing them to HAL just as he would to a human accidentally made HAL malfunction and decide to go full red eye mode as the solution 😉

When humanity had achieved technology to a certain level that allowed us to go to moon, survey and find something interesting and capable of digging to find the trigger (monolith), once the light from the sun reach it, it triggered another monolith in the orbit of Jupiter, which instigate humanity to reach the next level, going to Jupiter and finally evolve humanity to become a new species, starting from the starchild.

*Good day gentlemen!* ...Hate to quibble with you, Mr. Briefing-Man, but the purpose of the monolith is not a "total mystery"- only its origin is completely obscure. The powerful radio signal it emitted was set off when humans interacted with it on the moon. Therefore we know part of its purpose: to detect the presence of life forms (or some other type of entity) that either evolved on the moon or had the wherewithal to travel there and uncover the monolith. We don't know the meaning of the signal, but we do know the circumstance in which it was triggered. We can infer that the signal has some purpose that involves the detection of entities with the means to find the monolith and uncover it. Also, the fact that the dimensions of the monolith are 1 unit by 4 units by 9 units (the squares of 1,2,3) also suggests that there is some intent to signal to the beings that find it that it has a function involving the signaling its own "intelligent origin" to those who find it. Did God make it? Is it a spontaneous phenomenon having something to do with the physical nature of the universe? Discuss among yourselves...
There could be a much greater, more elaborate purpose, but by knowing the means by which it was activated, and the implications of mathematically-defined nature inherent in its physical dimensions, we've solved a small but significant portion of the mystery. Jus' sayin'. ;P
Of course those moon-walkers wouldn't have known about the interaction of the proto-humans with a monolith millions of years ago on Earth, but that particular mystery is distinct from the first one I was talking about: This second mystery is about whether that was the same monolith or an identical copy/issue. If it's the same monolith, how did it transfer to the moon? If it's a copy or alternate version with a similar purpose (to the one that ostensibly put the idea of tool use into the minds of our ape-like ancestors), then what happened to the one on Earth? It appears that the monolith(s) has at least 2 capacities: to communicate telepathically with the proto-humans millions of years ago, and to send a signal towards Jupiter when those creatures had refined their use of tools/technology to the point where they were no longer bound to Earth.
Personally, I like to think of it as a kind of missionary device/alarm system. First, it stimulates the proto-humans to use tools, which of course they use to immediately start killing things, especially each other, since killing our own species is the behavior which most distinctly defines human nature. Sure, some people would make a case for language, but the homicidal tendencies are more fundamental, IMHO. Lots of animals communicate with others of their kind, and only chimps are as homicidal as humans (nerd note: it would actually be pan-icidal, since the species name for chimps is pan troglodytes. -> Another nerd note: "troglodyte" means cave-dweller. I assume that the reference was to chimps' appearance (since they don't live in caves). Aren't you glad you know that now? ;D) You're welcome.
After humans have refined their tools to kill enough of each other that they can start infecting another celestial object (the moon) to gain more space in which to exploit the terrain and kill each other over possession of resources, the monolith alarm system yells "WATCH OUT, THE HUMANS ARE COMING (and they are probably going to start killing stuff once they get there, assuming there are things to be killed)." I think that boils down the essential facts to their most basic implications, but most people have a more ennobling anthropocentric interpretation. BAH HUMBUG.

Every conscious life form wants to live forever and experience pleasure on an eternal basis. The notion of "Human kind' s desire to kill it's own kind and other living things" is simply the unpolished jewel of our existence as self aware, carbon based , animals.
We hate that fact on a subconscious level . Everything we do from birth to death is out of our desire to be eternal and satisfied instead of limited and hungry.
If anything, 2001 becomes a Human comedy of sorts in that we are only capable of eating, reproducing, and dying. Everything else we are beholden to are fanciful thoughts. Even the Star Child is hungry ..... born to work, but desiring only to play. Even he is a mere stepping stone toward the fulfillment prize.

"Aha!", said Boeing later, the sunsat's origin and purpose becoming less of a mystery. And from other such pits, you build O'Neill habitats.

Why we would there be tools to deactivatte HAL, and why would they pre-recorded a message and already know where the ship would be when it's played if the earth crew of the spacecraft didn't already know that Hal would lie to the ship's crew?

    • @PointReflex
      @PointReflex 3 года назад +15

As stated in the book (written by Clarke and Kubrik while production of the film was still on-going) and in the film itself those are the reasons, and I help, the anwers to your querys.
1- The tools exist as a final fail safe manual mechanism to isolate HAL's damaged memory banks in a case of malfunction, ONLY after the command control in earth validates the such operation. Therefore the tools exist but the crew has no autorization to use them unless express permission is granted, the penalty for breaking this rule is, to put it simply, horrible.
2- The finding of the monolith on the moon was kept within extreme secrecy due to the political climate of the time between the Russia and the United States. Therefore the crew of the Discovery (the spaceship in the film) was told their mission was to explore Jupiter while in reality their mission was what the pre-recorded message explained, to search for advanced extraterrestrial technology orbiting that planet.
Since the reveal of the secret was still been negotiated within the Council of the United States, and knowing that the travel to Jupiter would take more than a year, it fitted them to keep the crew on the dark so none of them would spit the truth to the citizens of the earth before the Council had taken the destition to reveal it, hence, why the pre-recorded message was programed to be shown to the crew ONCE they reached the orbit of Jupiter, about 1.5~2.5 years after the monolith was found on the moon.
3- The reason why HAL killed the crew is perfectly explained the book and the movie "2010: The year we made contact", but is also partialy shown on this film. To make the long story "short": HAL was instructed to hold the true mission secret until they reached Jupiter's orbit, but at the same time it was constructed to present data as is, in other words, to tell the truth. This internal confflict within its main CPU systems forced him to make an effort to process two completly contradictory instructions.
In one scene of 2001 HAL, in an effort to throw at Dave some hints about the mission not being what he was told, express his concerns with the porpuse of it and explains the "rumors" about some findings on the moon. But remember, he is instructed to NOT tell them what the real mission is, so its best shot is to give them some loose hints that something is wrong, wich fail completly as Dave gives no more thought on the matter.
However this internal struggle starts to generate problems within HAL's automated systems, to the point that it starts to give wrong information about a possible malfunction in one of the telecomunications modules. In response to this the crew decided to deactivate HAL as a fail-safe measure, the command on Earth agrees with this, but HAL itself, now treatened by the death of its cognitive systems, in coalition to his programming to keep the mission going wich is mixed with the mess the contradictory hard coded instructions made to his cognitive systems, decides that the best action is to kill the crew.
The command on Earth never thought that a HAL super computer would take this kind of actions since it was NOT instructed to harm the crew, however they never contemplated what two contradictory and heavily mandatory orders would do to a self-aware AI.
I hope within this wall of text is the answer, if not, I am very sorry to have wasted your time.
      Cheers :3

A radio emission "aimed at Jupiter"?
How was that determined? They heard the radio transmission, but no one was prepared to determine where it was "aimed" at. And how would the monolith know where Jupiter was? Jupiter goes around the sun in an irregular orbit, the earth goes around the sun in an irregular orbit, the moon and earth orbit each other in an irregular orbit, and all that goes on for four million years. And yet as soon as the monolith is uncovered, it aims a radio transmission at Jupiter?
And just HOW do you direct a radio transmission at Jupiter anyway> Aiming radio transmissions is done with complex antennas, and there was no evidence of that at all.
And Jupiter is a VERY big place, with numerous moons. Where do you send your expedition to investigate? To what point were they heading?

Bruh the monolith was sending the radio waves to the second monolith outside of Jupiter, not Jupiter itself. i imagine that the advanced alien technology would be able to contact each other regardless of orbits or antennas

When I think I have extracted everything possible from the movie......Nietzsche's book is like being a monolith. I keep rereading it. It's sane. If I may: "On the New Idol Somewhere there are still peoples and herds, but not where we live, my brothers: here and there are states. State? What is that? Well then, open your ears to me, for now I shall speak to you about the death of peoples. State is the name of the coldest of all cold monsters. Coldly, it tells lies too: and this lie crawls out of its mouth: "I, the state, am the people." That is a lie! It was creators who created peoples and hung a faith and a love over them: thus they served life. It is annihilators who set traps for the many and call them "state" : they hang a sword and a hundred appetites over them. Thus spoke Zarathustra. "
We're the slaves of the phony leaders, breath the air we have blown you.

The monoliths' mission is to locate, observe, and nurture the development of intelligent life in the galaxy (possibly the universe). They were sent out by their alien creators to do this millions (maybe even billions) of years ago. They're just doing what they were programmed to do. Albeit inside of an indestructible shell that appears to have the ability to traverse space at possibly speeds faster than light.
