Somewhere in Time is a 1980 American romantic fantasy drama film from Universal Pictures, directed by Jeannot Szwarc, and starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Plummer. It is a film adaptation of the 1975 novel Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson, who also wrote the screenplay.
Reeve plays Richard Collier, a playwright who becomes obsessed with a photograph of a young woman at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Through self-hypnosis, he wishes himself back in time to the year 1912 to find love with actress Elise McKenna (portrayed by Seymour), but comes into conflict with Elise's manager, William Fawcett Robinson (portrayed by Plummer), who fears that romance will derail her career, and resolves to stop him.
The film is known for its musical score composed by John Barry, featuring pianist Roger Williams. The 18th variation of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is also used several times.

This music makes me cry....every time!!! A beautiful movie and a wonderful composition by John Barry who lost both his parents a few months before composing this masterpiece.
I didn't know that! Its giving me goosebumps 😭 so sad. My favorite song of all time. I'm 55
This is also my favorite piece from the very first time I heard it....during the film.
I love that it was inspired by his loss as that is the essence of this melody.

My understanding is that after Jane Seymour was hired for the movie, she arranged to get the music director for it. This music is the result. Let's give the lady at least this partial credit for an emotionally moving film.

This was the background music when my Auntie died to breast cancer 19 years ago. I can still remember how I took care of her when she had been suffering from unexplanable pain in her breast. I had to wake up when she's grawling and gnashing her teeth so I could give her a pain reliever. I SUPER DUPER MISS HER. I know I will see her in the resurrection morning. 🤍🤍🤍

I love songs from 70s,80s,90s and early 2000s and some Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars etc but no other music takes me to another world like somewhere in time. It calms my mind but at the same time gives me a mellow feeling. What a masterpiece!

This is the best version of Somewhere in Time that I have heard. Most versions are mostly the piano with very little cello and violin, not to mention the trombones. Such a remarkable group of young musicians. Bravo !!

I agree. Best music ever. I just read a few weeks ago an article of Jane Seymour she said they had to make the love scene and she said her and Christopher Reeve were falling in love as they made the movie and the day they were to shoot the love scene together she said in the article that he came back to do the scene he had found he was going to be a dad for the second time and that his ex had just told him and he told Jane Seymour he felt he had to go back. The article left me in tears as I'm sure she must have felt because she said here they were really falling in love only to find out the day of the love scene knowing they couldnt act upon their feelings because he was going back to his ex only after he'd learned about being a dad the second time. I always wondered about that movie with them and how I thought they were so good together in the movie. I only came across the article four weeks ago.

If you look closely at the musicians you can see their focus on the music at hand. Each one of them is engulfed into the melody. Of course they should always be, but here they seem to recognize the full beauty of the melody and it is touching them the way it touches us while they are playing their instruments.

John Barry had recently lost both of his parents within a short time of each other and then was asked to create the theme for the movie. This is the end result. Perhaps, to me, the greatest piece of music I have ever heard. The melody is so engulfing and every single note of the piano touches my heart and soul. I can listen to this for hours and hope the music never ends.
I know there are lyrics and I have listened to vocalists but none of them do justice to the song.
But, there is one vocalist in the world who could meet the challenge and bring the experience of feeling the melody to an even higher degree, one in which the audience will be in awe and brought to tears by her magic. Her initials are AJ.

Wow! I was in college in the 1980's when i first watched somewhere in time, until now i still want to watch it. Seymour and reeves - how lovely they are.
Perfect, no twiddling add on from the pianist, he played it and the musicians in the orchestra all played it as it should be played. This piece has lots of very delicate parts, after all it's about love. Thank you
