- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- This is the story of Moirai, A game no one can play anymore. It was created by Australian Indie Game developer Chris Johnson. Popularised on RUclips by channels such as Markiplier and Jacksepticeye in late 2016 the game took off on Steam. All was going well until someone took poorly to the game success.

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for the really nice comments! Bit surprised at the amount of traction this video has gotten as of late!
I am working on a new video as I type and hope to have it out very soon!
You guys are pretty neat! ❤
Thats the youtube algorythm for ya, never a clue what tiny video it blows up next.
wow I expected this channel to have a few hundred thousand subscribers, but no! this is really well made, good luck with growing your channel and getting the attention you deserve.
i saw my brother play this
Perhaps this video's content is a crossroad of search terms and interests that together trigger the algorithm.
If you take a look at steam, the dev has plans to try to bring it back. Fingers crossed dudes.
I'm proud that I was able to play it before it got taken offline. I remember laughing when the previous player started talking about eating a really good jam sandwich and that's why there was moaning.
A man of priorities
wait is it possible for multiple players to get the same guy? I remember getting this exact answer in my playthrough, that was priceless

The absolute gall on the troll to harass a game dev and then say to them "I make games too, you should play mine!".
@Your Mums Co-Worker hopefully nobody knows, they deserve no attention
@Your Mums Co-Worker Your "friends" have poor taste.
Exactly why the hacker/dev deserves no attention.
@@thejunktownsheriffkilliand4800he deserves kiwi farms attention
in all fairness they typed like a 12 year old kid, nothing really good can come of harassing em, just hope they learned from it and moved on and assuming they did make a game i hope he keeps doing it
That hacker is such a loser. Instead of spending their time working on their own game, they made it their mission to bring someone else's low. Even so, Moirai went down in history as a cool game with an interesting concept at its core, and the hacker is only known for ruining the fun.
Which isn't a loss for the Hacker who wanted attention. The hacker very clearly won.
It is why people are so helpless against trolls, they don't understand any positive or negative outcome makes trolls happy if it gets trolls attention. They win no matter what.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 people that need attention like that already lost at life

The fact that the hacker responded similarly as to how Moirai worked was funny.
i found it infantile, therefore it was infantile

I don't understand why they said it or why they did it. Were they really a child, or just some kind of narcissistic manchild?

I played morai before it blew up, back when I was young and couldn't afford games so I would play any free game steam had released to try and cope with boredom having played all the other free games that were fun and getting frustrated by ones that were pay to win. my first encounter was fairly unique because when I asked the man why he was covered in blood, he said it was because he slaughtered the sheep outside, I didn't believe him and killed him. the game hand-locked you in so I played it a second time. and sure enough once you got the knife you could go back outside and slaughter the sheep. when I went back through I used the same excuse, and also died... karma.
I too, had played moirai, It was when i was very young too, around 6-7, I did not know much english at the time and i basically played free games like you, and i just walked around for a bit and got bored, then uninstalled it, thankfully i still have it in my steam library, i havent got around to playing it though.

Man this is actually sad I randomly thought of this game after years
same
I wonder if the reason this guy took it upon himself to troll the dev is cuz he was mad he didn't get the attention he thinks he deserves for his game. I mean it makes sense that at a time of early RUclips Let's Plays someone immature could get salty over a game getting hyped up by Let's Plays
Instead of reaching out to youtubers, the hacker decided to ruin someone else's game. That's just sad.
I love these little cryptic games. I'm a small dev myself, and having something like this happen would be awful.. I could only imagine how bullshit it was
I'd just like to add that the developer chris made a steam discussion post on the moirai steam page asking how best he could monetise the game. He wants to bring it back but is unsure how to generate money for server costs etc. I wonder if that was a result of this video gaining traction?
I really hope so!!
Any response yet?
I love the response of "What did you think of the game?" There was a lot of questions he could've asked relating to why the hacker did it or who they were and plenty of emotionally charged responses that may have involved some foul language but instead he just asks a simple question. I may be looking too deep into it but to me it reads as Chris treating the hacker like just another player, not giving the attention that the hacker said they were looking for.
The best weapon against a troll is indifference.
It was such a beautiful example of a game that was more about the journey and experience then about complex mechanics or graphics.
Certainly a rare gem.
The hacker is exactly why we can't have nice things.
Its such a shame, Chris didn't deserve the shit he got for taking a day to spend with family. He didn't know it was going to blow up like that nor did he expect some dickbag ruining it for everyone else. The concept of the game and answers coming from other players was awesome.
My friends told me to play Moirai ages ago. But at the time, I was especially paranoid about possible hacks or viruses or whatever, so I never did play it. Now, I really wish I did.
How ironic that the game went offline due to a hacker.
I got a group of friends to play it and I remember us joking that this is the most elaborate email scam they have ever played
You didn't miss much of anything. This video makes a pretty low quality experience feel very mystifying.
@@turnkey_hole It would've been, is the thing.

I was searching for this game for ages, didn’t know what happened to it. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed! 😀
its sad what happened, i was an early player and what people did to a great experience for so many people was just wrong, and i wish i had spotted the hacker signs early enough to warn him back then since he did msg with a few of the loyal re-playing early followers.
“I heard moaning, what have you done?”
“Doo doo fard”
Absolutely glad I played the game before it blew up. Honestly it's a game I wish everyone could've experienced for themselves.
This reminds me of Journey where you can play with people but you have zero control over it. You cant communicate with them and they only pop in randomly. You can only work together to play the game
I hope Chris is still making games and that hacking deal didn't kill his passion for making them

I’d hate to be the last guy who played this and never got an email
Thanks for sharing! I never heard of this one or had a chance to try it. I hope the hacker fails utterly at their own game development dreams, what a jerk.

I just rewatched Markiplier's video about this game^^
I remember watching this years ago and thinking I should play it once I get a PC.... And this is how I'm reminded of it....
The fact that the hacker took over the game to get the dev's attention and then say "You should play my games" makes all of this even worse.
Great video, Moirai definitely could be brought back assuming someone decompiled the game or got the source code. It seems like the servers would be cheap to host.
Apparently it’s a Roblox game now called Norns

Imagine someone entering the answers not realizing anyone else would see it
He just needed to run the server in seasons, going dormant once issues are detected and restarting with a wipe at the beginning of the next season.
No kidding I've recently had strange flashbacks of this game existing, but I couldn't for the life of me recall what it was called. Something about it made such an unsettling imprint on my memory.
That was such a perfect ending. Great video!

Wow, I'd totally forgotten about this game. I still have the email from when I played it back in 2016. Hard to imagine it's been that long. Cool video.
I remember watching mark play this back in the day, good stuff.
For a long time I thought it was made by the same people who made "I'm scared".
I know the person who got the game taken down, and there's a lot of misinformation/superstition surrounding the method used to fill the database. There weren't "servers" used to host entries; it was a single SQL database that anyone could've accessed because plaintext credentials were bundled with the game during distribution. The database getting filled with garbage data was inevitable.
So…
Who's the person?
Doesn't excuse them for being a prick lmao
@@JinxBigStompa From what I've seen, the conversation Chris had published by CNET/PC Gamer was fabricated to fit his victim narrative and promote his other games. He also lied multiple times about the method used to fill the database with junk data so he could dramatize the events and act as if it was a sophisticated, coordinated attack. It wasn't. He distributed his credentials to literally everyone who downloaded it.
The only hint of truth to their conversation were the first couple quotes published. Actual conversation:
- Chris gets an invite from my friend after being spotted on the Steam forums.
- Chris opens with:
"Why'd you do it?"
Friend: "I thought it was funny"
C: "For the lolz, eh?"
F: "you bet my man"
C: "What did you think about the game?"
- Friend asks another friend of ours to write up his actual thoughts on the game. That's relayed to Chris.
F: "I thought it was interesting, and that the camera and fog made it feel eerie. The positioning of the camera, the slow speed of the player, makes you feel vulnerable."
- Friend then asks Chris to play a Roblox game he and the other friend had given up on years prior.
- Conversation ends.
I think if you find an obvious security vulnerability, you should prod at it until it gets noticed. The database was filled with a single line of text, by a single person, and Chris could've addressed the issue by temporarily taking the SQL database offline to change his credentials. It wasn't a continual problem either. There was never a script published to the game's discussions page. The database was filled *once* and that was enough for Chris to take the game offline permanently.

this is why we can't have nice things.
"Would you hack the game if I put it back up?" Why not like, change the code so he can't hack it again? I know it can't be full-proof, but at least you know this one specific exploit that can be patched
Also eitherway, even if he could fix the hack, he would have to go through the database and delete not only all the hacks but all the derogatory things people have put in. This, combined with needing a server to actual host the games recent popularity, combined with the game getting a massive poor reputation dump for no fault of it or his own that can not really be fixed, was too much for one man and an extremely small team to do.

Awesome video brother
I don't think Moirai is gone. Even though it relies on a server to play, there were probably hundreds of thousands of people that downloaded it and there's no way everyone who once had it just deleted it.
But it relies on a central server to work fully, doesn‘t it?
Had to check. I downloaded this game and found it in my library, then downloaded it.
When opening the game it now says "Moirai is no longer available to play. Thank you to everyone for taking an interest in our little game. Chris, John and Brad"
It was a small game anyway. Really enjoyed it though.
I actually played this just before it got popular, I’m so glad I got to experience it
glad i got the chance to play it then! i had no idea morai was gone
7:30 That's just creepy...
You don't need much of a server to run a game like this. Anti-spam protection is very easy to implement. Those are just excuses to not learn how to program properly.
thank god we didnt know the hacker’s name
it will forever be known as hacker and it’s game will never see the light of day or night
why are you calling them an it
It's a messed up situation, but I won't lie, I was definitely laughing at the conversation between the developer of Moirai and the hacker
I was thinking about the game and trying to find it. I saw the thumbnail and immediately knew it was the game- but the game I watched was actually a remake of the game, on roblox. I thought about it since the youtuber I watched played it in 2018-2020 so it wouldnt have made possible, I googled it up after seeing this video and sure enough, the game I thought of was the remake. I honestly find the idea of this really funny but also very interesting. The fact your fate is decided on another player, You giving up a reason WHY you had blood on you and the next player probably killing you (because, it's funny) if I played the game before it went offline- I would 100% get attached to the fictional character I play as and get a bit upset if I get killed
