  • Native Instruments seem to be keen to keep the momentum going with their Traktor Pro DJ software, after a long period of hibernation. In the new version 4, they finally bring variable beat grids to the app for the first time, and they’ve upgraded their existing stems infrastructure to introduce in-app stem analysis - and there’s plenty more to talk about, too. Mojaxx gives it a first look on the new episode of Beatsource Tech.

They delivered the 2 most requested features in one update plus got rid of the subscription model. It's probably their best work in a decade. Glad NI is finally back!

      @thegamingfrontier3079 Месяц назад +2

Yeah, when I upgraded to 3, I liked that there was a limiter integrated but completely turned off from the upgrade. I get the need to pay a team to keep up the software but it just didn't feel like NI (and a whole lot of other subscription model software) were doing enough to justify the subscription model and there's no critical need to keep the subscription since it's not an operating system with needs for security patches.

Flexible beatgrids which you have to manually beatgrid, so mojax doesn´t use it because he doesnt have time for it. however you can buy algoriddim dj for automatic analyzation and then buy a third party conversion tool to copy those grids to traktor.
Stem separation which hammers your cpu on the fly or messes up your hard drive when preanalyzed. preanalyzing also takes you ages because you cant batch analyze.

Have always loved Traktor and tried many others but something about Traktor just was smoothe. I was hoping for a video option even if an add-on purchase. But I do love the updates. For me one of the great features not often discussed that no other software has that Traktor has is the "recording auto-break" where you can make the settings for your recordings that it will break down the recordings into 700mb or 1gb or 2gb, which for me is a great feature instead on just one long recording - which if there is a problem or a failure you are not losing the entire project. At least with the auto-break feature is great.
Great job Traktor...now just add a Video option!

I started my DJ career with Traktor software, unfortunately I went with pioneers stand alone systems and recently came back because I found mixing 2 songs together in the pioneer ui was boring for me and not a challenge.
What a year it’s been. The x1 mk3 got me back into traktor! I repurchased my 2x f1 kontrols and woke up to this major update. Still use rekordbox usbs for my club sets but traktor is the most fun I’ve ever had as a DJ and I use it for hours. Now with the stems upgrade we are really going to be able to push new levels with our music. I couldn’t be happier with NI’s comeback with Traktor pro 4 👏🏾

This is very welcomed as a long time Traktor user. I would like them to continue to develop the stems analysis to make it quicker and able to do batches. Work on the grids to make them work better with non-quantized tracks (live drummers).
Then focus on getting Traktor working natively with other manufacturers' hardware, specifically inMusic and Reloop.

    • @arkaei

inMusic hardware "working natively" with anything NI is about as likely as virtual DJ bringing their UI to at least mid 2000s best practice standards.

As a lifetime Traktor user I feel seen by NI. Finally.
As they bought Izotope a long time ago it was ludicrous we had to wait this long for stem seperation.
I think the Ozone boost is going to be quite the gamechanger for where you can mix without an energy drop - so I'm really looking forwards to testing that.
All in all - I think it's a massive step forwards and they are back to where they should be imo

  • @spirosbulk
    @spirosbulk Месяц назад +1

I've been using traktor 4 for a week now and I have to say the following, the main future I was expecting was the flexible beatgrid and I'm disappointed with them.
    positives:
    1) the ozone maximizer is brilliant! traktor always had the best sound quality, compared to other software's by far! now... whoaw! my mind was blown, better than ever! very useful in our work!
    2) pattern players are amazing, all this drum machine's are great for live remix, amazing tool for us techno DJs! they work perfectly with amazing sound quality.
takes you to the next level of your dj abilities!
    3) no subscription model.
    4) stems
    negatives:
    1) flexible beatgrid we waited many years for traktor and unfortunately it is pure disappointment because you have to do them manually, they should have been at least automatic, after so many years of waiting, I expected it to be something like...2.5 beatgrid generation.
check out DJ PRO's liquid beatgrid THIS IS A GAME CHANGER!!
this is the main reason DJ PRO is selling like crazy.
the first thought I would work to update if I were NATIVE INSTRUMENTS would be to bring BEATGRID 3.0
    2) NATIVE INSTRUMENTS please for many years to bring us new hardware!
    now is the time!
we want a new Z2, we need deck's something like the Denon LC 6000 would be perfect for the traktor, we want new modular controllers, controllers.

    3) we need a lot of new hardware to be plug n play with TRAKTOR, finally wake up and collaborate with other companies!!
NATIVE must to start making .tsi files for as many 3rd party hardware controllers as possible !

This is a step in the right direction. The step sequencer is really fun. It means you no longer need Ableton to sync to trigger some drums when you're playing live. The only thing that really takes too long is the stem creation. Serato is miles ahead, there the separation runs instantly in the engine. Perhaps the Izotope RX algorithm is also a bit too oversized here.

So, to say something about flexible beat in Traktor Pro 4 when it's the same for all other DJ Program. Serato DJ 3.15, Virtual DJ 2024, Rekordbox 7, Engine DJ 4. Well, let me correct that because Deckadance had fluid beat grid since 2015 but they were bought by inmusic and you never heard from Deckadance again. But Deckadance was way way ahead of its time. Even today it has features that none of the top tier DJ software has. Looking at you inmusic but you are worried about Serato DJ being bought by Alpha Theta.

True while you can not batch process Stems in Traktor 4 you can however process many files to be processed one after another like queueing. While processing one file I wanted to see if I could process more, so I clicked on another file to generate stems while the previous file was still generating. I did the process about four more times. The outcome was great when one file finished the other started automatically it continued this cycle without any additional interaction from me until all songs were completed "Queueing". It uses a lot of CPU but, this method works just set it and forget, and it will complete the task. I have not tried to do more than 10 files in my testing. I'm sure I will steadily increase the number to see if there is a breaking point.

So can you essentially beatgrid a live drummer whose tempo drifts, or is it simply a convenient for electronic tracks with changing, but still perfectly spot-on, tempo? In other words, could you warp a 50-year-old Funk track the way you can with Ableton? NI isn't very clear on this.

Congratulations for this update. I'm frustrated about stems separation as it takes space on the HD and can't be done in batches but one track at a time. Not very useful.

I'm a Traktor user since its launch in 2000. The software still has catching up to do but it always had its strengths (like excellent DVS, FX, beat detection, and flexible midi mapping) that come into its own now with the version 4 update. Best feature by far is the fixed price though and its inclusion with the controller hardware. I still would love for NI to open its platform more to other hardware makers though. The closed ecosystem strategy they switched to at some point has clearly been a failure for them.

Nice review good to hear there is a team working on Traktor now. I take issue with your nuo-stems comment though - "quality of algorithm not good enough to recommend"?! 😂 Easily on par or better than any algorithm out there, and crucially it's a tool which let Traktor users take advantage of stem functionality.

I did like the way nuo-stems worked, but once VDJ Stems 2.0 and Algoriddim's latest stems dropped, stock Demucs wasn't really cutting it for me anymore.

I watched the Stems Comparison video by DJ NUO including the Traktor Pro 4 stems and to my ears Nuo Stems 3.0 and Traktor Pro 4 create the most useable stems of all the DJ Software programs. Really interested to see how things will have progressed in a year or two.

I know it's a big task but I wish they would re-program the whole app. These new features just seemed to be blutacked onto TP3. The stems as you pointed out, is really what you could do before, just more convienent within the software. Flexi beatgrids are very welcome but could of used algorithm djay approach.
The best part is being non-subscrition.
As for now I don't see any point with upgrading. I have used Traktor long enough that the Flexi beat grids isn't much of an issue with what I play and I can make stems when I need using other software.
I will wait until it becomes cheaper and hopefully improved.

More streaming possibilities like Tidal. I use Tidal now for my Belgium music for weddings... that's not available on other dj streaming services. Maybe they can be the first to at Apple Music ;-)

My biggest pet peeve with Traktor has been key lock quality for some time now and I don't understand how it's not a bigger topic. It's just bad, sounds horrible, while Serato kills it on that front. If NI implement a better key lock algo, that's an instant get for me, until that time comes I think I'll stay on T3.

Sup Mojax; Ive got just 1 tiny gripe matey. It's a shame you didn't loop a bar from each of the tracks, and run through the 4 different stem options to truely get a reasonable feel of the revamped "STEMS" options.
Sorry Mo I feel like I'm just picking, but I've subscribed to your channel now for 5 - 6 years and this is my first gripe Ive had with you! (Clearly it's obvious that I'm a dedicated Traktor user!)
Is your crystal ball suggesting N.I may release an updated Z2 mixer in the foreseeable?
Props for all the dope content geezer

Regarding only being able to create stems one track at a time rather than in batches....
Fill a playlist with the tracks you want to analyse
Right click the 1st track & select "generate stems". Analysis starts
Right click the 2nd track & select generate stems. Traktor will add it to the queue to analyse
    Rinse & repeat
