Heard a bit of this on NPR today. They talked about how hard it is, how revolutionary it is, to try to understand your “enemy,” or anyone who is just obviously in pain, with love. It really is the only way to truly change things. Thank you, Ani. What a perfect message for our time and future generations. I cried the whole way through, not because your song is sad, but because it’s so profoundly beautiful.

I LOVE this song..it's my song for my son who is a teenager and struggling with serious mental health issues..mostly self harm. Sometimes when people are suicidle they will do things to try and make you hate them so it will be easier when they are gone. As ani sings.."you can't make me hate you and carry that hate around". I love the part about "I will ask you questions. I will try to understand. if you tell me your stories I will hold it in my hands" that's sometimes what people need more then anything is for some One to ask questions and hold space for that person. It's not our job to lecture or solve there problems for them. People want to be heard and understood and loved unconditionally. She said she originally wrote this song as an activist song for how to listen to people we may politically disagree with to bring them over to our side. I do think thats an important approach generally speaking but we are not always going to be able to do that. Some people are too far gone. Like the Capitol rioters for instance. And some people are truly sociopathic and fascist. But when in good faith discussions with someone of differing political idealology it's really a good idea to start with an area of agreement and work your way out from there. Cancel culture does none of that..and should be reserved for those with money and power whom we can effectively call out that way.

Maybe. I've been looking at how the whole transcendence based, mostly monotheistic Western philosophies need this linear trajectory, compared to immanence based philosophies with several multiverses happening at once. Resistance doesn't really have a place in the latter, only the former. Coexistence doesn't really have a place in the former, so....here we are needing revolutions.
