  • It's been a very eventful last few days for BART. The legacy fleet has been fully retired, the schedule has been refined, and lots more.

Surprisingly, I teared up watching and listening to the overhead announcement. I am old enough to remember Berkeley and Oakland before BART construction and to think these trains have been in service for 51 years is remarkable to me, and I guess just reminds me of my mortality as well.

I loved your intro highlighting the last scheduled legacy train in service. That was so sweet of BART to create that announcement honoring the last legacy train, I almost felt teary-eyed. You really captured the moment beautifully ❤
And the rest of your video was great too, you did a nice job summarizing the service changes and I like the way you went over the new map and signs!

Thanks for recording the legacy train last run. Progress is always bittersweet that way, usually and certainly in this case it is for the best as the legacy fleet was well past it's time. However having existed and been used for so long means so many myself included have memories of riding those old trains over the years watching as they aged and yet usually always got us home. I really wish BART had made a bit more announcement of the final day. While it is nice to hear they did at least have some goodbye announcements that were played, it really was not a sendoff that caught the significance of the Decades of service. Hopefully we will see a bit larger and formal ceremony announced in the near future before they fully vanish into the fog of time.

New trains are good. Next, we need remodeled stations, in the core network.

Wow I thought being an automated train the headway during a weekday was more frequent then that! That sounds more like the Late Night Service on the New York City Subways. Normal headway on the NYCT during the day is about 6 minutes, and even shorter ( about 3 to 4 minutes) on the routes with the new CBTC signaling system like the 7 and L line!

Yeah, our transit frequencies in general - both BART and local agencies - don't really make for a fully practical mass transportation system; which of course leads to low rider satisfaction, low ridership & mode share; which then leads to funding cuts ...

I've been riding those trains since they were brand new and I was 8 years old.
I will not miss them. They were long past their retirement age. Machines get harder to maintain, and legitimately obsolete.
And upholstery & carpeting are just _not_ what you want in a space like that - you want surfaces you can hose down.
I really like the new trains (though not the corny name, which just reminds me of how "futuristic" the space-age BART trains were). They feel smoother, the seats are more comfy and cleaner, the layout is more open & accessible with space for wheelchairs and bicycles - major upgrade. And the new configuration has made for different moves in the West Oakland floor show, too.

I say good riddance to those old trains, something about sitting on a seat that "squishes down" when millions of others have used it just feels wrong, the inside of the trains with the color scheme just looked dingy and dirty too, and it's kind of ironic the "streamlined" front car was replaced with a traditional "flat face" subway look for all the "trains of the future". That said, the shorter schedule doesn't really affect me too much, as going from SF to Oakland there's two different lines so as long as they stagger them it should be a pretty easy wait. I will say the shorter trains are definitely noticeable as the one I ride more in the afternoon is only 6 cars long, and that does get noticeably more crowded (just in time for cold and flu season too!)

What is the plan for the disposal of the old cars? Some should be repurposed as temporary housing.

One will be a bike shop, One will be part of a library, three will be in the western railway museum.

If the yellow line is every 10 minutes and the orange is every 20 minutes does that mean that every orange line train will match with a yellow line train at 19th street and MacArthur but not vise versa?

yes but most traffic goes towards SF

Only place I can really see it being a "problem" is for eastbound travelers from SF to Richmond, who want to make the 19th Street transfer and take a Pittsburg bound yellow line train (those don't sync up with orange, only the Antioch ones do). Either way they'll only have to wait about 3 minutes per my quick peek at the schedule.

Yep, we need them to add that Purple line to meet up with the “second” Yellow line train and smooth out this kink in the new schedule.
