I think that the M Balboa Park drop off is so bad is because it is not at all a priority to muni. Nobody takes the M to balboa park, as BART, J and K are all faster. The J, K and BART are the ones that people take to balboa park, so they have a real centralized station. The M just kind of goes there and does its own thing because it takes the long way. Great video!

Portlander here This is a great review, you are right about so many things. But I don't believe Portland is an example of a good light rail city anymore. After a visit to Seattle with my friends last year, my opinion completely flipped upside down. The link is a far superior system to the Max, and we should build every new extension in the same style as the link Full grade separation, 8 minute frequency, and 4 length trains is the current absolute gold standard of light rail. Damn you Seattle... Y'all just have to be better at everything... I know there is an at grade section south of downtown on MLKJr Way, but everything else in Seattle is just perfect

The union city transit looks my hometown transit company transIT but they difference is they have a green stripe in the middle or a fully green bus

The Sam trans should truly drop their express buses they can’t compete with Caltrain period just revive the M bus of AC transit

I did a similar route, but it was just VTA->Caltrain->BART->MUNI->Ferry->San Joaquins. I have a video of it! :) I liked this video. It left me wanting to know more!

Now for a "mega blåhaj% transit speedrun", add in the IKEA West Sacramento location to get all 4 NorCal IKEAs! Best bet would probably be to walk ~2/3 mile or take the Emery Go-Round from the Emeryville IKEA to the Emeryville Amtrak station and catch the Capitol Corridor to Sacramento. Then in Sacramento, either walk a few blocks south to Capitol Mall to take Yolobus 240 or 41 to IKEA, or walk a half-mile west over the I Street Bridge to West Sacramento and order a VIA shuttle (operated by Yolobus). Of special note is that the Capitol Corridor comes with free transfers to Yolobus, SacRT, AC Transit, and other agencies.

IMHO, if a bus or train is there and will get you to your destination but might be slower than a different route, take the one that is already there. "A bird in the hand" and all that.

I'm curious, how busy are the bay area transit networks during rush times? I see people living in the bay area, especially in cities like Palo Alto, as being "too rich to use transit"

Still too much whining for my taste. The Bay Area has both an incredible variety and density of transit. There's always a faster/better way to get where you're going if you use the express services. You don't need to take the slow and delay-prone modes if you don't want to. Google maps will route you effortlessly on the fastest way to get there. And you're literally crossing multiple counties on some of these modes and cover some insane distances by transit standards. Is it really so surprising that there are some delays, especially on the busses? The longer the line the more delay-prone it will be. That's pretty much a law of nature.

LFG....this whole journey is marred by delays haha, this is so bay area. I gotta do this run one day, heres my idea: Start at <presidio go> then go to vanness/union then <ggtransit> to golden gate avenue, then walk to hyde and larkin, jump on the <UCSF shuttle *its free*> to civic center, take <BART> to montgomery street, then take the <capital corridor> connection from salesforce center (only timing you'd need to worry about) to amtrak emeryville, you can then proceed to go take the <emerygoround> to macarthur station, take the <ac transit> down to the ferry terminal, then <SF bay ferry> back to SF, get on the 292 <samtrans> three stops to 4th street, where you can take the 30/45 <MUNI> to <caltrain>, then caltrain to south SF where you can get on the free <South City Shuttle> to wherever less fun because less distance, but because of transit density you can do a lot more I think. Also would only work on a weekday because of the south city oyster point shuttle

I can't speak on any other city rail lines, but I'm really surprised to see you complimenting the DC metro. The noise in a tunnel is extremely loud, it seems like the whole system is really mismanaged, and the lighting in underground stations is creepy. I don't know any other rail lines that well, but jeez the others mist be terrible if you like the metro

I think this project could still do well. MIllbrae is nice enough. You stay connected to the city via bart for commuting but you get more suburban amenities.

DC metro rider here. The system is good - really good, no "for America" disclaimer needed. However, I think its biggest issue is that it's missing some "usefulness". There are some serious lack of connections on the system. For example, it was built to transport from suburb to city, so the connections within the city center are actually relatively poor. Interestingly enough, whereas most transit systems strengthen the downtown core, Dc's metro probably strengthened polycentrism. And I think this is why DC metro's ridership struggles compared to Canadian systems that offer a comparable amount or even less service. What's the point of a great system if it doesn't get used? Apart from that, things like platform screen doors, CBTC, increasing the speed limit, and reintroducing ATO would be nice, and they're planning on doing that. Express services are pretty much useless in my opinion. The system is already fast enough (Union station -> Dulles is only 10 mins slower than driving avoiding tolls WITHOUT traffic).

Never mind the immense, epic scale surface parking lots, not to mention the useless, empty “plazas” and surface parking in downtown Oakland the are such a liability to any comeback Oakland might attempt. What is the delay in building up those parking lots, with multi story parking below or above mixed use development? Bad planning. Bad governance

It’s so annoying that they under built this like so much that they’re hesitant to even extend it, saying that it will be over capacity with more stops. What was even the point then?

If someone needs to travel between the 2 stations, samTrans has 2 separate bus routes that serve both. The EPX & 142. They both travel on Huntington Ave, a 2-3 minute bus ride!

Have you gone to check out Salt Lake City and its vast Trax lines? It is also working to possibly bring rail service back to a historic depot called the Rio Grande Plan!
