  • From the personal film library of Martinn Mandles, the first skipper of PGH Tucumcari. Uploaded by Ray Vellinga, Pres. IHS. This is terrific history lesson on hydrofoils. Until recently, this video could not be published under RUclips's now relaxed time limitations.

That's me at the chart desk, navigating High Point, using our TANCAV chart/video overlay system at the 16 minute mark. Thanks for sharing.

I drove the Secret model from Stevens Institute of Technology Davidson Lab circulate tow tank , Hoboken Nj , to David Taylor model Basin in 1979 during the gas crisis .
We used a civilian van with private plates to be low profile Except the license number did not allow me to fill up that day!
So when I almost ran out of gas I had to stop and wait till the next day!
Got to see the big basin and compared to our tow tank it was enormous !!!
    Now all gone …

The Chesapeake Bay could use a hydrofoil ferry system to get away from building more roads in sensitive watersheds . Need the speed and smoothness hydrofoils give for a contemporary ride. Maybe open up David Taylor once again to build an Advance Hydrofoil system and give the City of Annapolis an innovative business base. The Jones Act could help with the reason for existence.

These boats gave come and gone.
    Think they're all decommissioned.
Now there's SWATH and can't say the Navy has moved into this technology either.

hydrofoils are riding on the surface of the water and thus have some disadvantages in rough oceans. Swath have advantages such as very little roll/listing but aren't terribly fast. Catamarans also have their advantage/disadvantage. Everything is a trade off and needs dictate what is best.

Almost all of them got scrapped, except for one lucky one that a Scraper purchased instead and converted it to a Museum, It's the last of the PHM's Uss Aries No. 5. Located in Gasconade MO of all places.
