All companies should produce their own bioplastics based on where the majority of their biological waste is from. There is no point shipping plastics halfway across the globe.

Economies of scale make it worthwhile manufacture in one place. It is just cheaper, and allow to companion not to invest in the equipment to manufacture the plastic. So, cheaper with less investment.
Common sense doesn’t go too far in this mad world unfortunately
The plastics are produced locally. That’s what makes it so compelling, it can easily be produced anywhere and everywhere.
Producing bio plastics takes a lot of energy than producing conventional plastics.
The plastics are not the problem, the way we handle the waste is the problem.
Instead of wasting time and money on developing such useless short term bio plastics, we should work on how to improve the waste management system

It’s a huge step in the right direction and without these innovations we would still be stuck using single use plastics. Kudos to them and i applaud their way of thinking.

Something to consider... there is currently a major water shortage in Michoacan, Mexico where these avocados are harvested. It's very well known that avocado trees require an incredible amount of water.
What is the consideration there? What can the bioplastics industry do to help with the water problem?
But Avocados are Native to Mexico and are adapted to the water cycles in those regions with summer monsoon rains. Unlike California that is dry in the summer and wet in the winter

Lets be clear - bioplastic does not breakdown/compost in a landfill unless the temperature is kept above 75 degree, let alone a beach, gutter or forest.
When they say bioplastic decomposes faster they mean 75 to 100 years, instead of 150 years.

Well, organic is a little different from biological. Considering it's organic matter that accumulated over centuries it can't really be called biological since the stuff is dead. Biological usually is in reference to living things. Either way, there are spectra everywhere and just cuz you see a correlation doesn't mean they're the same thing; biofuels and biodegradable materials are obviously better for the environment, it's well documented.

The entire green industry in most countries is a rip off, counting on the ignorance or ill education of populations to vote in such green measures and/or incentivizing them with government grants or other tax deductible funding etc. Sad.

To make oil the avocado need to be full ripe and in thos case the avocado still no ripe fully is half green to be sale it across the world if we cut it full ripe we can ship it

@@ohyeahminecraft Water may be an abundant resource but ~fresh~ water aka the stuff we use for literally everything is not nearly as abundant. Though water go back into the water cycle within a short period, it does not necessarily return to fresh water. A lot goes back into the ocean.
Stop one use utensil. Use metal , that you can wash and reuse. This technology could be good just for packaging , but fork knives spoon glasses are much better in glass or metal.

I have friends in those parts of michoacan (tancitaro y periban) so I've been there and can say that the kid is making at least 100 usd per week which is more than the average weekly wage in México

Fun fact: Avocado pits have more nutrients than the rest of it does. It makes a wonderful tea chock full of blood scrubbing nutrients. Easily prepared and delicious.
Fun Fact (not really): avocado growers in Mexico started welcoming the cartel because they were offering services to these workers such as security for their land, products and themselves that the state failed (as always) to do so. So over time the cartel started to ask for the tax money in exchange for these services. Then they started to become more predatory (not only did they open their portfolio to drugs but wanted to expand to avocados too). Now they do extortion fees and the growers are carrying weapons now 24/7. Just a behind the scenes thing that not everyone knows about

Single use plastic is banned.
Apparently the plastic used from garbage bags to delivery take away packaging is BETTER plastic now, or so we are told.
Indians even reuse delivery plastics for storage organization etc.
But after a point you do throw.
They send these forks and spoons made of soft wood these days...
99% delivery parcels don't even send spoons now.
You gotta use your own dineware. Reducing on single use cutlery.
And I save those to reuse them after washing.
I DO NOT THROW the not used bunch of plastic cutlery served in Indian flights. I bring them home even if someone thinks I'm cheap.
But it's literally not touched.
And would be thrown the next second!
I use them at home when I'm taking a homemade meal out in lunch etc.
Atleast USE the single use plastic before throwing!
Every flight so many cutlery kits are literally thrown, (for example if you choose to eat Indian food by hand like a paratha etc.)

I wish more people did that.
So picky to point out they'll break down only after a year. That's nothing compared to regular plastic, and this is already assuming the worst-case scenario where they're not properly discarded. Huge improvement, please keep it going.

Ever think of Hemp plastic? As it's very quick to grow and as a textile uses are endless from rope, clothes or once Henry Ford built most of a car with it?
Yea well as long as they stop Hemp Farmers with over the top regulations, because the plant looks so similar to Marihuana, it won't take off as an industry. But it could be a really good ressource overall, if it gets less stressful for the farmers.

Back in the day (before ww2) hemp farms where everywhere in the world, just for that, producing ropes etc, america started a movement banning all these farms because of the use as a drug.
Can hemp be used to make things that are waterproof/food safe? That would be so cool and way more logical. Plus, the avocado business is heavily interfered with by cartels which makes ethical sourcing difficult
This is a huge environmental disaster considering avocados are one of the most water intensive pieces of produce to grow. We should focus on minimizing the amount of avocados we grow. Not finding ways to use more of them needlessly.
Totally agree ! And plastic made by avocado waste have same problem still than petroleum plastic. Production implicate chimical impact and nature or water pollution (biodegradable but in 1 year) with hazards for animals which live in these polluted habitats.
Materials other than plastic could be used for these single-use items.

After knowing how much the avocado industry is having negative impact on the environment. Now that I see that we can make single use product out of the wastes I feel much more confident on our capacity to face the climate crisis we are facing. Thank you for keeping the all system up
While this is a great and creative way to attempt to tackle the plastic issue, I'm concerned about the responsible sourcing. The avocado industry is corrupted in some areas and it can be hard to source ethically
I wish bioplastics could be composted in household compost bins.
Just look for PHA on google, it is already a reality.
Some are suposed to do that, seen many bags that says you can put in compost.

They don't really tell you how it's made I'm curious what's the ratio of avacado seed to whatever the other materials or plastics they use are. I doubt it's just avacado seed
Its not just avocado pits,he says,they use less petroleum for the production sooo yes.
And they said that it uses "less fossil fuels" than conventional plastic. I haven't checked, but I won't be surprised if its 90% fossil fuel + 10% avocado oil.

This is amazing and i am really proud of it, the only down side is that Avocados Trees use a LOT of water, which is sucking up all the water in Mexico

@@aliveandwell3958 Correct, I can see that and i completely agree with you, this is a great idea to fight our plastic problems, but behind the scenes, like the water in mexico, it has pretty much disappeared, the locals relied on that water that flows through there rivers so they could plant there own crops, but now they can't because of the demand of avocados which is absorbing it all up so we can have our guacamole, our "guac on toast" ect...,now there's this bioplastic (which is a huge step and its great) that comes from the avocado pits like it says, but this means that the demand will go even higher, which means thell plant even more trees... and so on.
Its solving one problem but making another even worse, im not trying to be annoying but its true, we'll just have to keep testing until we get it right, we are definitely getting closer

Not really, with the capacity of modern container ships, any impact, IF there was any is pretty low.

@@poochyenarulez Lightweight is irrelevant though. If you fill up a container with them, that's space another container would have taken. There's limited space on these ships and when they get full, additional ships are constructed to make additional trips. Every container of product you ship will contribute towards that.

Just experienced this while in Mexico. All avocado spoons and straws on the resort.
Like how Colgate makes bamboo toothbrushes, but the package it comes in is wrapped in plastic and the cardboard has a plastic laminate to it. When you open it there's a plastic tray to hold them upwards and a plastic foam insert to keep them from moving.

I read *_"Making plastic from avocado",_* and instantly got kinda mad. Then I saw the full title and I now approve of this.
But it still contains plastic. The quick decomposition just means the plastic will enter the water supply faster.

Slicing avocado pits into thin sheets and mixing it in with tea is a good source of antioxidants.
Bio plastics are one of the “green” things I’m on board with. Because they actually work, and actually do contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions (slightly).

They say they cannot compost avocado pits but i do it in my compost pile... So thats bullshit
Do you live in Mexico? Do you know how many avocados they have to compost? It takes months probably years to compost many of them, it’s a long process. Given the amount of just one worker that makes that amount of avocados. Plus the space they need, on top of that the environment around them.

Also they are probably trying to compost huge amounts of ONLY avocado waste. Sure you avocado waste composts amongst your many other food/yard wastes, but variety probably helps to compost much more quickly.
Go back to your little backyard garden. DUH they’re compostable, but who has hundreds of hectares to compost THOUSANDS of avocado waste? They have a better solution that’s making them more money.
