    One of my mates is the Grandson of Jimmy Murphy, who was assistant manager to Matt Busby for nearly 25 years. He recited me a story where Jimmy was asked "Who was the best player you ever coached?" Jimmy responded "Duncan Edwards" and the guy who asked the question replied with "Not Georgie Best?" to which Jimmy responded "No. George Best didn't need coaching."

      Exactly, which is why the GOAT of all time debates are rather meaningless. Also, the deconstructing analysis only goes so far (Messi and Maradona were one footed, etc), but what we can say with safety is that for about 6 or 7 seasons Best was one of the best and probably the best when Pele declined a little. And that he had it all: close control, two footed, great vision, acceleration, two footed, good header of the ball, great tackler too, and great shot from either foot. He was a complete player.
      I got to see him quite a few times at OT. I feel l increasingly lucky the older I get LOL.

      @@Muninman Everything about Best amazes me but what amazes me the most is his balance, The way he makes cuts on a dime and when he turns, it's like a skier leaning into the turn. They foul the shit out of him and he still keeps his balance and the ball. Hell, there's one where he is fouled, hits the ground, and bounces back up with control of the ball as if he had fallen on a trampoline and just popped up. Now the guy would have stayed on the ground, got carted off, and would be demanding a red. His balance was incredible.

    He was the best in the world for about 4 years until 'outside interests' distracted him. In those days cameras were not at all the games as they are now. I remember him playing at Southampton one evening in a league game, (1969 I think) and no one got near him that night. He scored a fabulous goal from outside the box into the top corner. Ended 3-0 If I remember rightly, when Saints played at the old Dell stadium.
    A girl from my class at school ran on the pitch and got his autograph and then managed to get back into the crowd chased by three stewards. She proudly showed his autograph in class ! Great days, glad I was around to witness them !

      Good pitches, and a lighter ball, softer ball to allow swerve and bend and dip to a shot. While Maradona's played quick one-twos, Best played his one-twos off the standing foot of the last defender. The rest survives in the memory of the lucky ManU fans who attended the games he played in where only the attendant crowd witnessed his peerless skills. Personal demons aside, he is the most naturally gifted player to grace the game and few come close to the talent this lovely man was blessed with!

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 3 года назад +1

      @Ultimate Nova Creep 'Ugly' is probably an overstatement. Successful dribbling is never ugly.
      But there's something about the way Best dribbles, the way his upper body is totally still, his arms slightly raised for balance, while his lower body does most of the movement, that makes him look more like he's in total control. You see the same thing with Maradona, Ronaldo Nazario, players like that. They have minimal upper body movement, and when there is upper body movement it's always deliberate, for a specific purpose. Also, when they started dribbling it always looked like they knew exactly what they were doing and had a path laid out ahead of them. Once they started running with the ball they tended not to stop or slow down. It looked so decisive.
      Whereas, with players like Messi, Neymar, even Ronaldinho, their upper bodies are throwing off feints and bobs all the time, just random twitches and jerks, and their style of dribbling involves a lot of stops and starts. It makes them look less elegant, less decisive. than the likes of Best, Ronaldo, Maradona, etc.
      Just my opinion of course. I used to play a lot of football and I was a dribbler. There was no feeling more glorious than beating two, three, four players in a row. It was always dribbling that made me fall in love with football and what I loved most was players who made dribbling look easy and elegant.

    • @nialloneill5097
      @nialloneill5097 3 года назад

      This is the main point I would make too, especially since his pace was a great asset in his early days. like the goal against Benfica showed in one of the clips above. He got by without it in later years due to his imperious balance, incredible strength, brilliant technique and fast footwork. Maradona had the footwork, Cruyff the balance, Ronaldo the technique and speed...so add them together, and you have George Best...simply the Best there has been. And it was noted he could play all positions in the team to an elite level, which tells you something about his all round skill base, along with his innate football wisdom. No player has ever brought joy to me like him, in fact I barely watch the game, sooner play, but if he was playing, I'd be glued to the set, no doubt, but like the man said, nearly all footage of Best was lost due to the lack of coverage back then. Sad, but true, so enjoy the few clips we have, including some of his games for N Ireland.

    There's a couple of very short clips amongst these, showing him playing for NI against Scotland in October '67. Dad finished his night shift in the mill and took me and Ian over on the ferry from Heysham. Bad crossing on the Duke of Lancaster, full of jocks - orangemen with the big drums and all the songs there in the canteen. Dad knew the words and sang along and him a taig. Whole place stank of beer, smoke and sick.
    Bloke at the gangway in Belfast selling rosettes from a box round his neck, so Dad got me a Celtic one and let me put my scarf on now.
    Quick say hello and some eats at my Aunt Pat's, then down town walk to Windsor Park. On way we turned a corner and Dad tore the rosette off my coat, put it on his. A bloke in a trilby and raincoat stopped us, a few quick words to Dad and we all went in this bar. He said it was not a good idea to wear the rosette. He said things were hotting up and it wasn't long now till it kicked off.
    Anyway we got to the match OK and what a performance from George. Magical touches every time he got the ball - and it was clear he really did want the ball that day. Only one goal and that from Dave Clements of Coventry.
    Still got the programme. Marvellous, unforgettable day.

    George Best hacia honor a su apellido. simplemente era el Mejor, un jugador adelantado a su época, una leyenda verdadera leyenda, que sucumbió en el alcohol y la vida bohemia de los ruidosos años 60 y 70. por algo lo llamaban el quinto Beatle.

    Ronaldo and Messi are 2 of the greatest, but there's a generation of players like Best, Charlton, Eusebio, Pele etc that we only have a handful of game footage to appreciate them. Boy I just wish we could of seen more of these great players I bet they've done some crazy things of camera.

      You are right. In one game he had 2 defenders marking him at all times. With United in front, he was tearing up the right wing when he dribbled pass them both like a ghost. He then turned around and went back and dribbled around them again to the delight of the crowd. A bit disrespectful but he was so confident and could ride a tackle like a cat, when tackling was brutal, and still have the ball at his feet.
      I was at the match where he kicked the ball high after Gordon Banks had released it and he went on and scored a header as the ball was falling back to the ground. Unfortunately it didn't count. He was pure magic that day.
      He was as good drunk as he was sober. He was drunk in quite a few games. He wasn't the only one at United, though.

    Made me cry just watching it. The memories! And all done on muddy bobbly pitches. Look how many times he is tripped - if he went down he got up and beat them again. Messi - eat your heart out!

      Ive seen Messi go down and dive plenty of times. Don't make him to look like a saint out there. When Messi gets a bad tackle its because its just that, a player who made a bad tackle. George Best had to play against guys who would chop you at your knees on purpose and run through them. That goal he scored in this video against Chelsea, where the defender tries to saw Best in half, the referee didn't even give that challenge a second look. It was normal back then.
