I am a 4th generation Episcopalian who loves the Church. It has been called a "Big Tent", referring to the fact that there is a diversity of opinions and beliefs within it. The Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America was formed after the war for American independence from Great Britain. The Church's liturgy is beautiful, its hymns are gorgeous, and the clergy's vestments aren't too bad, either. Mainly, however, we love our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ!

@@jacobprice4544 Hello Jacob! Yes, the Episcopal welcomes all people baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity to participate fully in the life of the church, including the taking of Holy Communion. Regarding church membership, the Episcopal church has a process called reception where the person already baptized in the name is "received" into the church by a Bishop, similar to that of confirmation. As a devout, 4th generation, Episcopalian, I appreciate you referencing the official Episcopal website quotes and not just stating your opinion and understanding of the doctrine. I think the question regarding whether Episcopalians believe in the Bible was poorly worded. The quote from the church’s website is clear. Growing up, the more I learned about the Episcopal faith the more grateful I was to have been born and raised in it. So many people lose the faith and turn away from (or never had a faith) because their house of worship denied their intellect or humanity. I love the ‘Via Media’

Your entire channel, all the videos together, remind me of something C.S. Lewis said in Mere Christianity. He compared different Christian denominations to different doors leading to different rooms in one big hall. He said, "The hall is a place to wait in, a place from which to try the various doors, not a place to live in. For that purpose the worst of the rooms (whichever that may be) is, I think, preferable. It is true that some people may find they have to wait in the hall for a considerable time, while others feel certain almost at once which door they must knock at. I do not know why there is this difference, but I am sure God keeps no one waiting unless He sees that it is good for him to wait. When you do get into your room you will find that the long wait has done you some kind of good which you would not have had otherwise. But you must regard it as waiting, not as camping. You must keep on praying for light; and, of course, even in the hall, you must begin trying to obey the rules which are common to the whole house. And above all you must be asking which door is the true one; not which pleases you best by its paint and panelling. @@MilwaukeeWoman is there just one specific way to pray, I don't belong to any denomination, but if I were to pray without my hands together and eyes closed, but instead treat it like a casual chat with God just while I walking in my house, is that socially common and acceptable too?
@@91722854 you should always be in conversation with God. We are to pray without ceasing. I don't think it is a casual chat that was meant by that, but our whole life is supposed to be a prayer. As far as conventional 'prayer,' there's a probably a right way to do it, but I think it has more to do with the substance of the prayer than the method. I could prostrate myself for hours, entreating the Father for wealth and it still wouldn't be right. But if I spend my prayer time asking for help to keep my faith in Him and doing my best to align my will to His, it doesn't matter how I go about it as long as my method of prayer doesn't cause me to commit some offense (i.e. swearing).

As a Catholic, it bewilders me how similar the Episcopalians are. Basically Catholics, however there are major points that we disagree with. But it's one of the closest protestant branches.
The elder branches of protestantism is a decendant of the western Chruch. Ergo Roman Catholics.
Presbyterians (calvenists), Anglicans, Lutherans, and Moravians (Hussites) are generally similar or "catholic" lite.
Its a object of "protest" to authority and subsuquent dogamas there in.

But of course, once Luther made his arguments, many Northern Europeans wanted to cash in to the movement, drew their own conclusions, and now that's why there are hundreds of different protestant branches today. I've been an athiest for many years, and sometimes I question it. I have a high revulsion to religion. But I always feel if I was to believe in God and pick a belief system... the Episcopalian doctrine is the closest thing I can relate to. I live the fundamental belief that Faith is whatever makes you feel closer to God. We can believe different things of have different views on common religions teachings or history or whatnot. Whatever brings you peace. Is good. Idk how to word it. The fact they welcome science and welcome questioning faith. I love it.
Catholics welcome science too, in fact it was a Roman Catholic priest that came up with the theory of the Big Bang.
I was raised effectively as an Evangelical. As you may realize, there is a certain reputation that proceeds this denomination's beliefs. The older I grew and the more I learned, the more I came to a realization of a deficit (among other problems of course), and it very much was in the spirit of your last few words here - welcome science and welcome questioning faith. There is unfortunately very little faith in science within Evangelical circles and even many "non-denominational" churches, and it seems that questioning faith, meaning seeking to see if what you're believing is correct, is either discouraged or generally avoided. Fortunately, the way I see it now, there is a perfectly viable (and better in my humble opinion) understanding of the Bible that respects God-inspired writings but also doesn't compromise the necessary human nature of the authors and the cultural understandings that they wrote from. In that light, many of the controversial passages found within Scripture (such as the Genesis 1 or Flood account) don't require any absurd translation that compromises the rest of the Bible. Many people holding to strict inerrancy doctrine would probably disagree with me, but I suppose there's a reason an ongoing debate persists.
As it stands now, I believe that I maintain a reasonable theology, but its very precedent for existence is set from known scientific research, consistent historical findings, and philosophical thought. Perhaps it would encourage you to know that such a thing is possible, albeit not very common within North American culture and thought.
I suspect a lot of Episcopalians are closet atheists, as most of us consider the Bible allegorical and treat the whole thing as more of a philosophy than a religion. Personally, I don't literally believe in God, but I do feel like attending an Episcopal church and being a part of such a welcoming community has had a positive psychological influence on me. You never hear any preaching about Satan or hellfire, that's for sure; only thought-provoking sermons that inspire us to become better people in our daily lives.

This is a great video! As someone interested in the Episcopalian church, googling individual questions often turns up long winded vague paragraphs that don't really answer my questions.
Everybody shows up and prays the same words while at the same time believing different things about what those words mean. You aren't going to find a single answer, the variety of answers you're finding is as clear as it's going to get.
Don't get me wrong, though. There are plenty of us that say the Nicene Creed every Sunday and only mean just what it says.
On Hell, the survey doesn't capture what I take to be a very Episcopalian position: to believe in the existence of a state of permanent separation from God, but to hope and pray that no one will end up there.
My priest said someone similar recently. That maybe there's a hell but it's empty.
I love Episcopal sites/ topics.When I chance upon one, I read even the comments. I noticed that even non-Episcopalians can freely say, express what they think in Episcopal sites, and Episcopalians take whatever criticisms, gracefully.

Part of the issue is (given that definition of "inerrancy"), anyone who denies the historical literality of certain events would necessarily have to say they reject inerrancy. This is why many more conservative bodies (although short of fundamentalist) such as the Roman Catholics or Eastern Orthodox reject the label of inerrancy while at the same time affirming the Bible's "infallibility." This is because while they do not see all of the historical narratives as needing to be taken as "literal truth", they nonetheless affirm that the Scriptures are the result of the Holy Spirit's inspiration and thus free of error in all matters concerning "doctrine and morality."
So if inerrancy = absolute literalism, most Christians will resist the label... however, if inerrancy simply means that the Bible teaches no errors, than most Christians will affirm it.

The ironic thing about the biblical "infallibility" is that Protestants reject several books included in the Catholic Bible. How can one be a fundamentalist and yet cherry pick which books of the Bible to acknowledge as canon? That's the very definition of hypocrisy right there.

King Henry VIII started the Anglican Church from which the Episcopal church is an offshoot. Christ began the Catholic Church.
@@Margoctober It wasn't really that he "started it" since early Anglicanism was just Catholicism with a different name. He himself identified as Catholic even after England and Rome separated. Anglicanism is more about the evolution of beliefs and practices over the centuries in the absence of Catholic influence, which depending on tradition is either nearly identical or wildly divergent. Episcopalianism is the American offshoot if Anglicanism so you're correct there. Regardless, Anglicanism still has apostolic succession because of its Catholic "heritage," you could say, so Anglican priests are connected to the apostles in the same was that Catholic priests are, so I don't think it's necessarily fair to completely discredit Anglicanism/Episcopalianism solely because of its origins.

I was baptized Episcopalian, but was raised in a pretty secular household, recently I've sought out faith, first through Eastern Orthodoxy, but I stopped going to that church and found difficulty in feeling a part of the community there and in feeling present during Liturgy. Lately I've just been reading the Bible on my own and am debating seeking out an Episcopalian church. Maybe I'm just fickle lmao

I love the Episcopal Church and am a member of it. My criticism of this video is that it is read too fast. This should be read slowly so that people can follow what is being said and assimilate it without having to pause the video in order to think about what is being said. I have noticed that other videos unfortunately have the same problem.

In 1991 I renewed my confirmation vows in a large old Episcopal church in Houston, Texas. I loved that church. I served as an usher, a lay reader, and an officiant at Evening Prayer. I attended Wednesday evening adult Bible study and 10:00 Sunday morning Eucharist. I felt like I was part of a church that was doing its part in upholding Christian truth. How times have changed! That church now sponsors drag queen shows at gay bars. They now have a majority of priestesses on staff. They now hold "blessing of the backpacks" ceremonies. I guess this is in line with the overall trend in the Episcopal Church. Sadly, since 1991, the ordination of admitted alcoholics and of divorcees is commonplace. The reprehensible and evil fatal hit and run of Suffragen Bishop Heather Cook in 2014 encapsulates the apparent moral vacuousness of the Episcopal Church today. Looking at the big picture, Protestantism is whatever you want it to be.

That part at the end about some Episcopalians not believing the Bible is the Word of God is shocking and saddening at the same time because at every Episcopal service at the end of daily scripture reading the priest says “the Word of the Lord” and the congregation replies “thanks be to God”.

I mean, in their defense, a prevailing belief is that it's divinely inspired and not the literal word of God. That's my own belief, for instance, so I would answer no to it being the word of God. I don't consider it a sad fact at all, because, frankly, the third pillar of the church is reason, and you can make strong arguments for exactly how it can't be the literal word of God.
Not so sad, considering the bible canon did not exist for the first few hundreds of years of the church. You can be thankful for the word of the Lord, recognizing that you are receiving a truly divine inspired message, but also keeping in mind that these divinely inspired messages were communicated through imperfect vessels, as all humans are guilty of sin. Until Jesus himself comes back and tells us from his mouth, make sure to check if the word coming from man is consistent with the nature of God.

As you touched on is their official position on Biblical inerrancy. The Episcopal church asserts that the Bible may have errors in "what it teaches about God and God's will for human salvation" presumably because it has passed through the hands of mankind. This allows them to create doctrine as they wish since they can decide something in scripture is a mistake or something more nefarious. Ironically, their doctrine making process is by definition passing the Word of God "through the hands of mankind". Their whole statement is in the glossary of terms on their official website, but I'll quote it here:
Inerrancy, Biblical
The belief that the Bible contains no errors, whether theological, moral, historical, or scientific. Sophisticated holders of this theory, however, stress that the biblical manuscripts as originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek were inerrant, but not those that are presently available. Some more conservative scholars are reluctant to speak of inerrancy, but choose to speak of biblical infallibility. They mean that the Bible is completely infallible in what it teaches about God and God's will for human salvation, but not necessarily in all its historical or scientific statements. Episcopal churches do confession as a group during the service. But if you would like a private confession with an Episcopal priest, you can make an appointment with the priest.

Basically, if you believe Christ is present during the Eurcharist that's fine. And if you believe in transubstantiation that's also fine. Some people kneel and bow to the alter and some don't, it's all fine. No one will kick you out of the church.
Some mystery has to be left to God. It's not anyting like explaining how a V8 internal combustion engine works...
Both are the same. Transubstantiation means that the bread and wine are transformed into the body and blood of CHRIST. When and how it happens is during the communion prayers. The words and actions are not magic words. It happens because CHRIST loves us and he freely gives us the grace of his body and blood. When two or three are gathered CHRIST is really present (Mathew 18:20). Even if we are not celebrating holy communion, he is really with us as Mathew taught.
@In the Wilderness of Be'er Sheva that is awful. I thought that we are in full communion with the Lutheran churches. They should not have singled you out or refused you communion. We had priest serve as interim for a few months who was ordained by the Lutherans and serves in the Episcopal Church. She is retired from Lutheran ministry, so does that make it different? I don't know.
@In the Wilderness of Be'er Sheva I went to Roman Catholic Schools for elementary. I went through 1st Communion and served as a altar boy for school and Sunday mass. I was asked to be in an Easter pageant. I told the priest only then that I was never baptized and wasn't Catholic. I was kicked out of school. I was sent to a public elementary for 6th grade.
My view of taking the Eucharist or the communion is that you are not only becoming United with Christ in his body and blood but you're also saying I am in communion with this body of christians. I do not take communion in churches where I do not feel that I am in communion with them. Whether that is right or wrong I do not know it is what I as a farmer Anglican priest and now a retired minister it is what I believe and what I practice.

Why? The Holy Bible is full of inaccuracies, especially the various English versions. It has been both purposely and accidentally mistranslated and misinterpreted countless times over thousands of years even without considering, but especially when considering historical and cultural contexts. Some books of the Holy Bible were never intended to be taken literally from the beginning, but as 'books of wisdom.' These are facts.

4:04 is ridiculous, I was baptized into a Church as a child under the similar pretense yet my life was utterly sinful & devoid of the love of God. It was only when I truly put Faith in Christ did I become born again into a new creation seeking after righteousness & justified by way of Christs sacrifice through Faith. They truly preach a false progressive gospel in which the road to salvation is as wide as possible, to state those who continue in homosexuality are not rebelling against God is blasphemy against the clear words of Paul in Romans 1:26, 1 Cor 6:9 etc. this is what happens when you lessen the Word of God, all scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit, ppl here i read want to argue against this due to supposed translational errors, if u actually knew, the consistency of translation is at like 98% accuracy and has nothing to do with foundational doctrine, only the inevitable fault of human error. See how ppl use any excuse to change the Word of God, once this begins it is as a plague, nothing is off limits, I pray for the people swept up in this.

They believe in another Christ,not the Christ of the Bible. They also tie works with salvation. Which is saying that Christ blood is not powerful enough to save us. Read John and Romans to get a clear teaching of the Gospel.
If you want a milktoast religion that will make you feel good about yourself and not require any sacrifice and where even devil worship is seen as "well that is not a good thing; but let me pray on it so you don't hurt yourself" then the Episcopal Church is the place to be. A Place where good and evil do not exist because all is relative and we do not want to hurt anyone's feelings because there really is no right or wrong except perhaps wanting to raise children with a mother and dad in a marriage. But being a transexual is great and being a homosexual is even better. That is why I left this church because it was not consonant with the New Testament as Jesus Christ taught it and is written in the New Testament.
TEC didn't welcome me, my wife, my elder son, or my black grandson. They love to virtue signal, but their three rules are shut up, sit down, and put money in the plate.

I'm a Young born again Christian I go to an Episcopal Church and after seeing this and how unbiblical the teachings of the Episcopal Church are I want to find a different Church but I can't I'm too young to go to a different Church on my own will and me and my family already have a community in that church but I still I want to be a place that actually worships God what should I do?

The Episcopal view of Hell is very similar to Eastern Christianity. Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Catholics all have that in common. I know of both Eastern and Western Christians who also don't believe in the Virgin Birth. Orthodox and Catholics in the East, and Protestants and Catholics in the West. Sad but true.

THE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH has been derailed from the teachings of the Holy Bible now for at least since the 1960's about the time of its' most notorious Bishop, Bishop James A. Pike.

Pope Leo XIII had no authority over JESUS neither did he have authority outside of the Roman Catholic Church. Papal superiority is not taught by any scripture or by any Ecumenical Council. Those are the Councils began at Nicea. The pope has no authority over anyone not submitting to him. Only JESUS is the head of the church and no pope tells him what to do.
