Oh brilliant! I just mentioned you yesterday over dinner and ended up having a VERY fulfilling discussion regarding the Ed Sheeran case and music law and how great your channel is. This is hands down the nicest and most encouraging comment ive ever received on this channel. You're right, life does get in the way, and these videos take time to research and then produce and although the channel is monetised I only get about £60 a month in ad revenue, which just about covers Adobe subscription, Web hosting fees, podcast fees etc. I'm caught in a vicious cycle. I know this channel will do well but I need to get to about 100 videos (there's 37 right now) before I'll start earning enough to focus on it more. But I won't get to 100 videos any time soon if I don't put more time in! 😕 with that in mind I have activated super thanks and set up a merch shelf using spreadshop...so there are ways to support the channel... but honestly this message is worth 1000 tee shirt sales. (Hopefully more but certainly no less) My deepest heartfelt thanks again. 😊 Wayne.

I was born in 1980 and this was the first song I've heard, though I didn't know it was a cover of Tommy James & the Shandell's song until I heard the original version of the song.

She was huge when I was in high school and I played that vinyl LP a lot. I was surprised she didn't go on to have a great career, she could really belt it out and was a pretty girl. Unlike the other poster, I heard "I Think We're Alone Now" on the radio here in Ontario just the other day!
Looking back at how she started and the quick rise to fame, you do wonder why she didn't go on to have a long succesful career. From what I learned researching this, her personal life was very tumultuous. Would have made it really hard to focus on what needed to be done. At some point I'll do a full profile on her.
Whichever version we hear first, gets imprinted in our minds as 'the best', and we will forever think of that as the original, especially if it happened when we were growing up.
No. I heard the Tiffany version first. Her vocal performance is good but the backing track is a horrible and tasteless SAWalike. The Tommy James version I heard easily ten years later. I thought it was better then and I still do now.
2 things from the 80s that I always thought were interesting: both Tiffany and Billy Idol having big hits with Tommy James covers around the same time. That and Quiet Riot having 2 big hits by covering the same band (Slade). I always thought those were 2 interesting notes.
Those are exactly the kind of facts that I get excited about too...glad to know I'm not alone. 😊 I think it's crazy 2 Tommy James number 1s would be covered in the same year decades later and both go to number 1, in the same order it's kind of a weird coincidence 🤔
Lene Lovich is my favourite. Totally into new wave. Also heard a version of the Rubinoos. Very enjoyable too. But Tiffany did a good job, her voice is strong and she made a classic 80s popsong of it
Fun fact she’s half Middle eastern 1/4 Syrian 1/4 Lebanese. I’ve heard her mention her Lebanese roots before though not any mention of being Syrian that I can recall. The surname Darwish is Arabic.
I'm a child of the 80's and had Tiffany's posters all over my walls and even dated two girls just because they were named Tiffany, and they were pretty hot also so I much prefer Tiffany's version.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I'm from UK so had never heard of The Rubinoos. They aren't known over here at all and it seems they had very limited success in the USA. Their version of I think we're alone didn't even break the top 40...peaking at 44. I didn't mention the girls aloud version either and that made the top 10 in the UK, I didn't feel that mentioning either version would really add much to the story. Same with the Billy Joe Armstrong version.
She has rose tattoo but it’s more pop country it was a short album and just gave a taste of what she’s capable of. It was her first country album so she was experimenting and testing the waters for sure.
Well I'm 61 so obviously Tommy James nailed it but I really like Tiffany's version too. But having just heard Lene Lovich's version; that was good also. I loved this story... didn't know Tiffany basically got her start singing in malls; how cool!
i think it is interesting that her manager/guardian said she was 16 when they started touring Malls, she herself said that this happend when she was 14. -> even more interesting is that she performed in nightclubs before she did the malls - so she was 14 or younger when she performed in nightclubs? Add to that the divorce of her parents and her mom being in rehab at that time. jikes - i am sure that was all above board in the 80s but surely this would raise some eyebrows today.
I Think Were Alone Now version that is the best with Tiffany was arranged by John Edward Duarte who you see at the beginning of this video in the recording studio and also see at the keyboard at concerts.
That's the usual ruse. Even J. Edgar Hoover had the gall to get in front of Congress in 1955 and say "There is no mafia." while his friends in the mob were supplying him with underage boys.
7:25 - Tiffany was absolutely right - they missed a trick with that record, the B-side should have been an unadorned acoustic version a la here : ruclips.net/video/NCvIntx2M7Y/видео.html She has always had a great voice the stripped vocals version of the original here ruclips.net/video/2bV78uyLQGk/видео.html shows simultaneously the folly of the 'dance' production and the force, clarity and power of her adorable voice
I think her love was country and rock, she was hesitant to do a dance track. Who knows how it may have turned out if she hadn't gone with New Kids On The Blocks management and instead did what Pink did and switch to her preferred style once she had a bit of profile. 🤔
To me the problem is not the copyright infringement or the 100.000 for that. The real problem is 4,5 in legal costs. All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal because they can afford real lawyers
Hi thanks for watching, and taking time to comment. There's a lot of details I chose to leave out. The sync in Ted didn't really increase interest in the song the way "Don't Stop Believing" in the Sopranos or "Running Up That Hill" in Stranger Things did, so I didn't think it was a key detail. I'm thinking of doing a video specifically on Movie/TV syncs and the uplift effect they can have.
@@Traxploitation There's also the incident from last year, when a drunk Tiffany was struggling to sing the song before cursing at the crowd, claiming it was her song.
@@areasevenpro yeah I saw that. I feel for her tbh...its a tough biz...especially when u fall from grace...I'm going to do full profile on Tiffany, this one was more about the song than her...
I just went and listened to the Girls Aloud version. Tiffany's is definitely the better version. Tiffany's voice is just perfect and masterful. The different girls' vocals on the Girls Aloud version doesn't even come close to being as good.
Damn you Seth MacFarlane. Damn you Ted. This song will always get the volume turned up every time I hear it because of that scene in that movie. Lolz 😂🧸 Thunder Buddies 4Life.
I'm not much of a fan of 1980s mainstream pop, but Tiffany's version is pretty catchy for that genre, not quite as good as Belinda Carlisle's "Mad About You", but pretty good. However, it doesn't come close to the Tommy James & The Shondels original, which, with its menacing opening bass line and hypnotic tomtom and birds chirping leading into each chorus, was one of my favorite pop records of all time. I've read that the James version also featured an Ondioline, which was an early synthesizer that was first sold in 1940. I've always liked the sounds from those very early synthesizers better than most of the synth-pop cliche sounds of the 1980s. Anyway, I hope with the mob out of the way, the songwriter was able to get paid the second time around.
I remember growing up I always preferred the original and I still do prefer it, but I do like hearing Tiffany's cover here and there (joyous me I get to hear it every couple of days on the store radio at work!)
Robin sparkles? The fictional character played by Cobie Smulders in the 2005-2014 sitcom "How I met your mother"? 🤷♂️🤦♂️😆 You're either joking or very confused 😁
OMG, i was going to say the same thing! Thank you, i didn't know if there was anyone else out there who knows that one. Lene's version has a sultriness that permeates the vocal AND the beat, and the cadence and stresses of her sex-infused vocal offer a slap in the face to the "they" who are calling her and her lover "children." The high pitched "aahhh" at the fade-out is eerie but still sexy (as well as alien-operatic), The James and Tiffany versions both come across as the protagonists actually BEING children (well, young teens i guess), and that's fine, but it takes a truly gifted artist (Lovich in this case) to find layers to a song that even the writers didn't perceive (and you have to do this well, otherwise you're just misinterpreting the song, of course). That's not dissing James, who made some decent music (Crystal Blue Persuasion being the best, IMHO), but he could have left this one alone and no one would have missed it (except of course, that Lene got to hear it and make it a near masterpiece). "Lucky Number" is another one of hers that deserves huge praise, but i've hijacked your comment space enough.
There's probably a good story for a video in Lene Lovich. Labelling her "New Wave" doesn't seem quite right. I got into music when I was 11 in 1979 so New Wave was my growing up music. But I remember Lovich having a couple of hits and she seemed to be way more "out there" than typical New Wave acts. I thought of her as a performance artist making some kind of pop music crossover. But that's how I read it as a kid and I don't actually know anything about where she came from or where she went just that she was a one-of-a-kind phenomenon that brushed with popular culture briefly.
I grew up when Tommy James was having one hit record after another and "I Think we're alone now" was always a favorite. After seeing Lene's video "Lucky Number" I bought her album "Stateless" I think I became a bigger fan, once I heard her version of "I think we're alone now." But today I think I prefer Tommy James version.
i was going to watch a video about a girl i had a crush on in high school, and perhaps some history on Tommy James and the Shondells and their multiple 80s remake hits. but then right at the start you mention Mae Boren Axton introducing Elvis to Colonel Parker and then i got depressed :( one of music histories biggest tragedies.
Was Parker really that bad? The last I heard, and this was from the biographies that were put together hastily after Elvis' death, Parker took a sizeable chunk of Pressley's royalties (25% or maybe even 50%), but Elvis said it was worth every penny, and at least he wasn't left with nothing, like so many artists then and now. Even the Rolling Stones were counting pennies (as described in Bill Wyman's diaries) while topping the charts all over the world. On the other hand, however fair or unfair Parker was to Elvis, he probably played a big role in getting him signed to RCA, where he got a lot more exposure, but lost some of the raw spontaneity of his Sun recordings. That might have been the price of superstardom.
i have probably forgotten more than i remember as i havent really looked into it all in a very long time. Parker possibly made Elvis more wealth than he would have been, but i am pretty certain he would have been happier and healthier without Parker. Elbis wanted to be an actor and make REAL movie and he did not want to sing in them he wanted to just be an actor. but Parker wouldnt et any of the studios use Elvis unless he had songs featured in the film and performed them thus you famously have all these goofy bad Elvis films and no real serious roles which is one of the many things that tarnishes his legacy to people that dnt like him. Parker intercepted anyone that wanted to work with Elvis and had Elvis doing all the goofy pop music and while Elvis would always freely admit that he had never written a song in his life Parker would force writers to gice Elvis a writing credit if they wanted Elvis to sing their song, which is one more thing that tarnishes Elvis legacy and that people who dont like him look down on his legacy for when he really had nothing to do with it other than never stand up to Parker. Parker wouldnt et anyone near Elvis without his approval which led to Elvis becoming the first real shut in celebrity that lost touch with the real world and was surrounded with yes men which led to him seeming sort of strange and further tarnishing his legacy as well as having no real friends or at least making his friendships questionable as hey were all employed by Parker. even when he did his famous comeback special he had to basically beg Parker to let him have his old friend and guitarist Scotty be there so that it would feel like the old days for Elvis. he just controlled every facet of Elvis's life which i believe led to Elvis not actually being very happy and he spends his last several years doing the routine Las Vegas residency which has a kind of melancholy around it and also tarnishes his legacy. and he starts doing who knows what kind of drugs and medications to deal with whatever depression he is going through because he is always locked up until its show time and that led to his famous weird puffy looking weight gain which is one more thing that people that dont like Elvis just make fun of and tarnishes his legacy. i just genuinely believe if Elvis hadnt fallen under Parkers spell he would have lived a longer and happier life and would have accomplished more of his own personal goals, would he have been as successful and made as much money? i really dont know but i believe he would have been happier and i believe his legacy would be far more respected today as it should be.
Mae Boren Axton is Hoyt Axton's mother. They are the only mother and son to have both written a #1 song. "Could've Been" is a better song for Tiffany, in my opinion, as it shows her power and range.
The only Japanese version i know of is actually by Lene Lovich, she's British/American...she also recorded a version in German. 🤔 ruclips.net/video/URPtOAs_eMc/видео.htmlsi=6_D16zOdfJTxdGmI
That's true.. There's been at least 44 commercially released cover versions. secondhandsongs.com/work/10139/versions I think these videos would be pretty boring if I just listed every version...so I pick the notable versions... The only thing notable about Gary Lewis version is that it's Jerry Lewis son. It wasn't even released as a single by them. 🤔
SCOTTISH the song you asked about is "Queen of Hearts" (it was a big hit for the singer Juice Newton in 1981)... ruclips.net/video/P0DK-0fIKCw/видео.html
I can't find that anywhere on YT. I did run into Billie Joe Armstrong's version though, which was pretty good. Better than Tiffany, not quite as good as Tommy James.
Yes, America. She is an American artist, signed to an American label so naturally the American release date is the first and most significant. 🤷♂️ However, it was also released in UK, Japan and Across Europe later the same year 1987. It entered the UK chart in January 1988.
I'm live were Tiffany bought a home after her fifteen minutes of fame was over in the hillside up in North Tustin. Which was the home of Chuck Norris... She was a very unhappy person would drive around with nasty attitude this was like in the mid 90s. But I like her song and too bad by then she had lost her looks too... She Wasn't very gracious with her 15 mins of fame 😢
Interesting to hear first hand reports of how her issues manifested. It's really not as simple as her being ungracious. She went through a lot! Aside from the sheer craziness of going number 1 around the world as a young teenager with no adequate parental supervisor. She divorced her parents and dealt with a lot on her own. I didn't want to get into those details here as this video was about the song more than Tiffany but I will circle back as its an interesting story.
I think the original is a pretty well known song in general, even if Tiffany's version gets more radio play. I prefer the original, but the cover is alright too (the 80's cheese is at least amusing).
K. Well thank you for taking the time to watch something so uninteresting you felt compelled to comment 🤷♂️🤦♂️ and what a great comment it is. I'm so glad you shared your very important opinion. 😆 I bet you'd have a ton of elbow room at parties...if u ever get invited to one...let me know. 😁
Trends are cyclical. In the eighties you were Team Tiffany or Camp Debbie Gibson. I wasn't like a HUGE fan of either but I was always Team Tiffany Tiffany had an edge. One could tell.
I did mention it briefly at the end. But yeah, its not great and wasn't really a hit. Of the 23 singles Girls Aloud have released this one ranks number 17 with just 85,000 copies sold. 🤔
this is one of the worst remakes of all time. soulless, mechanical, boring. and tiffany had zero charisma. i'm glad this song has pretty much disappeared and the original stands strong, as the definitive version. only 13 year old girls in 1988 listened to this song, anyway.
@@weevie833 lol i was just joking around. however, if you ask the vast majority of people who were around when this song was released and weren't teenage/pre-teen girls, they will tell you that they always thought this version was pure garbage. especially fans of tommy james. billy idol's and joan jett's tommy james remakes were solid, and accepted as legitimate versions of 'mony mony' and 'crimson and clover'. of course, there are exceptions to this, but no one took tiffany seriously, seriously. it's just reality.
The title of the video is "the story of tiffanys I think we're alone now, signature songs that are actually covers" the video is about the song, "i think we're alone now" not the artists that sang it. This is also explained in the description. It's about a song sung by 2 different artists (actually 4 or more but 2 very famous versions), so naturally, roughly half the time will be spent on each of the 2 main artists, and a little mention of the other 2 well-known versions.. As is the case here. Tiffany is in about half the video, but it's not a video about Tiffany, and I didn't "advertise" it any other way. Thanks for watching, anyway. 😀

It was brilliant. Labels did it quite a few times after. Thats how they sold Britney and Christina after their Mickey Mouse stint.

@@Traxploitation Thats nice. Hope you had a nice time there.
@@PreciousFew6110 sure did! Did a bit of research for some future episodes. 😁
I love that one
Best version definately Tiffany's
2 things from the 80s that I always thought were interesting: both Tiffany and Billy Idol having big hits with Tommy James covers around the same time. That and Quiet Riot having 2 big hits by covering the same band (Slade). I always thought those were 2 interesting notes.
Those are exactly the kind of facts that I get excited about too...glad to know I'm not alone. 😊
I think it's crazy 2 Tommy James number 1s would be covered in the same year decades later and both go to number 1, in the same order it's kind of a weird coincidence 🤔
@@Traxploitation Joan Jett covered Tommy James’ Crimson and Clover 1982 - #7 for in US, #6 in Australia, #4 in Canada, but only #60 in the UK.🤷🏻♂️
Lene Lovich is my favourite. Totally into new wave. Also heard a version of the Rubinoos. Very enjoyable too. But Tiffany did a good job, her voice is strong and she made a classic 80s popsong of it
He's back
Tiffany’s is the Best
Fun fact she’s half Middle eastern 1/4 Syrian 1/4 Lebanese. I’ve heard her mention her Lebanese roots before though not any mention of being Syrian that I can recall. The surname Darwish is Arabic.
Yeah, her dad was Lebanese-American and her Mum was half Irish, half Native American.
Very diverse background.
I'm a child of the 80's and had Tiffany's posters all over my walls and even dated two girls just because they were named Tiffany, and they were pretty hot also so I much prefer Tiffany's version.
Great video. Surprised the Rubinoos version from 1977 was not mentioned.
That guy who didn't have any connections to the mob was extremely convincing.
Hahaha!
Quality channel, I hope more people hear about you and subscribe.
Thanks 😊
Me too!
Tiffany should do a country album,I'd buy it.
She has rose tattoo but it’s more pop country it was a short album and just gave a taste of what she’s capable of. It was her first country album so she was experimenting and testing the waters for sure.
Dude she’s done a one or two country albums, Rose Tattoo is one of them, she even re-released a country version of I Think Were Alone Now
happy to be your 800th like 👍
Well I'm 61 so obviously Tommy James nailed it but I really like Tiffany's version too.
I've met today and today would be fine with this just like every today in the past.
Tiffany versiin by far the best
I Think Were Alone Now version that is the best with Tiffany was arranged by John Edward Duarte who you see at the beginning of this video in the recording studio and also see at the keyboard at concerts.
She's great...
"there is no connection between the mob and the music business" 😠😠😠
yeah bro.. you sound very convincing 🤔🤔🤔
That's the usual ruse. Even J. Edgar Hoover had the gall to get in front of Congress in 1955 and say "There is no mafia." while his friends in the mob were supplying him with underage boys.
I remember her well I was just a little older than her.
Tiffany's version is definitely the most iconic, but I still tend towards the original of any track.
Personally I think Tiffany would be great in alternative rock and folk.
The real problem is 4,5 in legal costs.

pure 80s...........yeah baby !......never even knew about the original..........Tiffany did it better.
Tiffany had an original b side that sounded like Don Henley's boys of summer.
You forgot to mention that Tiffany's version received a minor resurgence when it was featured in the 2012 film Ted. Yeah, that was a creepy scene.

I recorded Tiffany once, and engineered sessions at George Tobin’s studio quite a few times.

I had the biggest crush on her as a kid she is 2 years older than me.
Tiffany version
Listen to the Birthday Massacre version. It's like a goth rock synthpop version.

The Rubinoos version is my favourite
I came here to mention the Rubinoos' version too, that isn't mentioned in the video. I've actually got a 7" single copy of the Rubinoos' version!
this is like when I found out For Whom The Bells Toll was actually written by The Troggs
Let me guess your not a fan of Madonna then 😂
Tiffany was just a back-up singer for Robin Sparkles, the singer of the very popular song "Let's Go To The Mall"
Robin sparkles? The fictional character played by Cobie Smulders in the 2005-2014 sitcom "How I met your mother"? 🤷♂️🤦♂️😆
You're either joking or very confused 😁
This is exactly like Heart Alone....a million times better than the original.
Lene Lovich version is infinitely better than the others.
OMG, i was going to say the same thing! Thank you, i didn't know if there was anyone else out there who knows that one.
Lene's version has a sultriness that permeates the vocal AND the beat, and the cadence and stresses of her sex-infused vocal offer a slap in the face to the "they" who are calling her and her lover "children." The high pitched "aahhh" at the fade-out is eerie but still sexy (as well as alien-operatic),
The James and Tiffany versions both come across as the protagonists actually BEING children (well, young teens i guess), and that's fine, but it takes a truly gifted artist (Lovich in this case) to find layers to a song that even the writers didn't perceive (and you have to do this well, otherwise you're just misinterpreting the song, of course).
The production and performance of Lene Lovich's version seems to be more consistent with the actual lyrics. It just makes more sense.
I grew up when Tommy James was having one hit record after another
and "I Think we're alone now" was always a favorite.
After seeing Lene's video "Lucky Number" I bought her album "Stateless"
I think I became a bigger fan, once I heard her version of "I think we're alone now."
But today I think I prefer Tommy James version.
Seriously? I just listened to that, and it was horrible. Tommy's original is definitely the best.
And let's not forget the parody "I think I'm a clone now"
I’m binging!!!😂😂😂😂
i was going to watch a video about a girl i had a crush on in high school, and perhaps some history on Tommy James and the Shondells and their multiple 80s remake hits. but then right at the start you mention Mae Boren Axton introducing Elvis to Colonel Parker and then i got depressed :(
one of music histories biggest tragedies.
So true. Imagine how different everything would be if Elvis had never met that crook? 😕
My favourite cover of it is from the 80s Aussie band RatCat
Mae Boren Axton is Hoyt Axton's mother. They are the only mother and son to have both written a #1 song.
"Could've Been" is a better song for Tiffany, in my opinion, as it shows her power and range.

Nothing against Tiffany. She did a great job obviously, but I prefer Tommy's version which is what I grew up with.
The best version is by a female-fronted Heavy Metal band called BITCH and the singer is Betsy Weiss. They released it in February of 1982.
I can't find that anywhere on YT. I did run into Billie Joe Armstrong's version though, which was pretty good. Better than Tiffany, not quite as good as Tommy James.

Anyone born in the 1960s knows that it's a Tommy James and the Shondells song
actually no, I was 2 years old when it was released and had no idea it was a cover when it was released by tiffany in 1987
I think the original is a pretty well known song in general, even if Tiffany's version gets more radio play. I prefer the original, but the cover is alright too (the 80's cheese is at least amusing).
Tommy James huh? Yeah.

This video is not showing Tiffany hardly at all which is very contradictory to this advertisement of this video!
