This is the story of Milli Vanilli…one of the biggest scandals to rock the music industry.
Part one looked at how Milli Vanilli was formed and Frank Farian the producer behind it all before covering their meteoric rise to success and scandalous fall from grace. We also looked into what the duo did in the 30 years that followed the miming scandal.
In Part two we dive deeper into the details and reveal the shocking truth the record industry doesn't want you to know! Milli Vanilli were NOT the only imposters!

This is so good. Subbed and in awe, keep this going. I feel like it's almost diabolical how it went down with Milli Vanilli. Because would have Rob died like this if the producer was honest... Terrible. But this is well made!

C&C Music Factory was ALWAYS about money as well as fashion, jewelry and hairstyles.
I mean they never pretended that the dancers were singing the song as by then everyone knew what sampling was and how dance music was made.
Likewise Black Box, I mean everyone I knew was aware that it was a sample loop.
They were always promoted as models and dancers.
It was all a bit yuppie cringe but I think this documentary misrepresents what C&C and the mega-hit dance music of the early 90s was all about.
So someone who sang a session song and was paid a basic studio fee is miffed they didn't get credit on a record that they otherwise had no input on at all but seriously the record companies OWNED those samples.

Must be lucrative or they wouldn't do it. The music industry is a pimp-ho business model: pay for the artists' clothes, cars used in music videos, touring costs, drugs & parties then tell them they owe YOU money after the tour's over. It's part of the reason they want young (often poor Black) naive singers--so they'll not understand contracts & fine print.

That's the gamble they take. If it's successful, they make enough to be able to pay up expenses, (usually out of court), to make it worth their while, and if it flops, hardly anyone notices it and there's no real case against them. It's a win-win for them. Contracts are written up with the fine print worded in such a way that the record companies literally own the recordings with the artists only getting royalties, usually only about 3% of any profits. And, if they can find a loophole where the actual singer isn't credited, they'll take it. Any legal action taken in retrospect is already accounted for. The record companies don't lose out, that's for sure.

There are so many artists today who don’t need auto tune while singing live, and there’s a long (nearly a century-long) history of artists lip syncing for live performances. I think you need to look at this from more of a zoomed-out perspective if you’re going to make disparaging comparisons

There was another huge hit in 1990 with the same pattern. Snap! and "The power" The lyrics which define the song are taken from "Love's gonna get you" from Jocelyn Brown. Again in the video someone else was lip syncing. Jocelyn was neither credited, nor paid or asked for permission to use her voice. The whole case ended up in a law suit as well.

    • @Traxploitation
      @Traxploitation  2 года назад +33

The story of "The Power" is a little more complicated than that. The original version samples vocals from both Jocelyn Brown and Chill Rob G. Chill Rob G vocals were replaced by Turbo B who rerecorded the sample (adding a couple of lines) and Penny Ford (musical director and backing singer for Chaka Khan) also recorded new vocals. In the video Jackie Harris mimes to the vocals of both Penny Ford and Jocelyn Brown. It's definitely a story worth telling though!

That scandal really destroyed their lives professionally and personally for a long while and, I think caused Rob who was already fighting depression and drug addiction that nobody knew about to take his life. Always thought it was cool that Arsenio Hall was the first to have them perform as themselves when that whole scandal was over with.

Since I was around during ,Milli Vanilli, I did always think they never should have been treated as the bad ones in this, it was that producer that tricked them into it, they were the real victims, not the fans of the music who bought the albums mostly because they liked the way the guys looked, more then how they sung!
I also remember the others here of course, that all came after, and though I knew that lots of movies dubbed in the singing in a lot of musicals and movies showing an actor singing, but I was surprised just exactly how sneaky and underhanded it was at times, towards the actors and the singers!
I actually never knew the Monkey's was also done that way at first, I did know that some of the guys really wanted to do their own music and wanted the show the end so they could leave the group even!

The Monkees at first, sang the songs. They didn't play the instruments. Two of them were actual musicians, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith. The other two fought against Headquarters. But Dolenz learned to play. This was a situation where they weren't using other singers' voices. Whatever. They had great sonwriters, including Nesmith, John Stuart, Boyce and Hart and Neil Diamond among others. And their sound was great. The Beatles used other musicians in their songs. Like Eric Clapton in While My Guitar Gently Weeps. George Harrison just couldn't play like that (I am no Clapton fan as a solo act or his racism). Paul McCartney played the drums for Ringo on Dear Prudence, who up and quit for a while on the White Album. Studio musicians are rarelygiven credit. They sometimes have to fight for it. The music business really sucks

    • @Traxploitation
      @Traxploitation  3 года назад +12

Sadly, you're right. The music industry wasn't set up for the sake of the music, or the fans, or the musicians. It was started by opportunists in search of the next money-making scheme. Many of the people that set up the first music publishers previously sold corsets, bras, bibles and encyclopedias, when Edison patented his phonograph he intended it for use in court cases to record the events, not as a music medium. When it was sold as a domestic playback device the first recordings were speeches, comedy routines and sermons as well as music. Like all ventures undertaken solely for profit the only 2 ways to make money is to underpay your workers/suppliers or overcharge your customers, or both.
For example. Back when the Beatles were putting out music a record cost 40p, the equivalent of 2hrs wages for men, (or 4 hours for women!) thats like charging $20 for one song in 2022! Yet from that 40p the Beatles were paid just 1p shared 4 ways.
The exploitation of both the musicians and audience is baked into the music industry.

However to the comments...I got some rage on behalf of Martha reading some people 's comments on this video. "NO ONE WOULD KNOW WHO MARTHA WASH WAS WITHOUT C&C MUSIC FACTORY. " With all do respect the person who commented that, you are only speaking for yourself. I did and I was a child when C&C music factory was making videos that I remember skipping the video thinking...oh...that's not a music video...that looked like a work out/buns on steel video. I didn't care for the video, I only understood it was an actual so once I heard it on the radio. I knew who Martha was, she was one of the Weather Girls. I was a kid. I didn't get the adult concept of the lyrics "It's raining men" but it didn't stop me from driving my family insane by practicing hitting every note Martha could. Clearly the person who only discovered music with C&C music factory didn't have a radio as a child or had no interest in any other genre of music.
    Oh yes I did...I went there....not sorry.
As for the comment "NO ONE WANTS TO SEE A 300LBS WOMAN IN A MUSIC VIDEO" that person who added that to the comment. You are speaking for yourself. Not for everyone. The Weather Girls did their own videos. Prince, yes Prince the music legend was happy to have a fantastic singer who also was had a fantastic voice, was a plus sized woman dressed seductively, in the video Get Off. You might not to see a plus size singer in a music video but true great musicians, that did their own work...again...I went there...still not sorry....they did. They gave credit where credit was do.

AMEN! Glad I'm not the only one enraged by some of the comments! Martha Wash is a beautiful lady with a wonderful voice, who deserves credit when her voice is used on a hit song. End. Of. Story!

@@Traxploitation What about Karen Wheeler from Soul II Soul? She wasn't a small lady and was front and center of their outfit. She's beautiful with an amazing voice singing what would be groundbreaking British Soul tracks in the late 80s/90s. Try telling Aretha no one wanted to see her on stage.
"BOY, YOU BETTER THINK!!" and give these lady's some "RESPECT!!" would be what you'd hear. LOL

@Marvellous132 I read out loud as I was reading that "Damn straight! You know it!" Adding snaps of my fingers.
Yes! You get it. It is disturbing how much the music cares more about "the look" over actually talent. I am not going to even say female singers as it happened as it happens to males too...the first time I lived through a male singer being erased visually from the band, was with John Popper the lead singer of the band The Blues Travelers; lead singer. When they got a hit started getting attention, they were told not to show John- the lead singer, in the music videos and on live TV appearances he was really only shown playing harmonica. Hands covering his face as he played.
When it comes to weight people will use the "entertainment industry beauty standards " arguments. But no one uses the same agreement if an artist/band is slender/fit/healthy but is not conventionally attractive in the face. Someone can be conventionally "unattractive " and be an artist, no "entertainment beauty standards/no one wants to see that" arguments. People will defend the talent the person has instead of relying on any standards of entertainment industry beauty standards as a defense. Which to people who see are as a visual product make music no longer art. It's no longer music that one can listen too.

To beat it all, these are great songs! All the ones listed here, that was popular in the US, are still "go to" and favorite songs I will always play. I was crazy about the Monkeys music, and I had the Archie's album too! To love these songs so much, it's extremely disappointing to not have the proper credit on everything! Heartbreaking for these artists. 💜

They used Martha's vocals and the video was lip-synched by a slender model and pretty face! They did that a lot back in the late 80s and 90s!! Such a shame!! Thanks for this content!!😲😲😲😲😲😲👋👋👋

Much of which I was aware of being in the music business myself you meet people & lots of things get said & as plausible as they may seem it’s difficult to establish at the time but as with all things, over time the light reaches in the dark corners as our eyes become accustomed to it. The song “I’m a believer” sung by the Monkeys but written by Neil Diamond, made popular again in the movie Shrek. Good video, thanks for the history of music in the 80’s and beyond.I truly hate what happened to Mili Vanilli… that cancel culture caused a man to delete himself due to backlash, humiliation, and ridicule. So sad and look what image has become!

I still remembered and convinced back then that Katrin was the voice of Black Box, until Martha Walsh came out, and was also the voice of C & C Music factory. Darn confusing as a kid back then. Then my dad added there was Christopher Cross who song those hit songs in the 80's, but people thought he was some Tom-Selleck look alike but they were wrong lol. Even back then people placed image over talent.

Great video. The section about The Monkees isn't entirely accurate though. They assumed one they'd been cast that they'd be responsible for the music and only found out later that they'd be restricted to only providing vocals. Mike Nesmith was allowed to produce the songs he wrote though and managed to sneak Peter Tork in to play some guitar on those songs. Mike and Peter were fighting with Don Kirshner for more creative freedom from day 1 but he wasn't interested. Eventually, he was fired after doing some dodgy deals behind the show's creators back as well as his ongoing war with The Monkees who were now banding together in wanting to be a real band. While it is true that the show's rating did start to decline, sales were still strong. The first album The Monkees had full control over, "Headquarters" made it to number 2 on the US album charts. This was seen as a fall from grace as the previous albums made it to number 1. However, this was purely down to bad timing as the album happened to be released on the same day as The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". It did remain on the charts in that number 2 position for the same amount of time as Pepper was at number 1 though (or close to it). Interestingly, the musicians who did play on The Monkees earlier recordings were the same musicians playing on albums by The Byrds and The Beach Boys. That's a lot of information for a small part of a longer video though. Keep up the good work and I look forward to watching more of your videos.
