Good analysis, I learned some things I didn't know before. Whilst I'm sure Holyfield was on the sauce, I'm skeptical of all 90s era guys to be honest, and doubly so for HWs. The physiques we saw were ridiculous compared to previous eras. And the testing was commission-only. They were under-funded and more importantly, their revenue was directly tied to how well the boxing business was doing, and suspending big names would limit their scope. It'd also probably result in a decrease in exciting fighters, too.

Sir, I don't believe you've analyzed particularly the 2nd bout enough if you don't see intentional headbutting. You have to know what you're looking for. I believe there is a great chance Tyson would lose this rematch because of most of what you said and some of what you didn't say. People never really pick up on it and talk about. Tyson and Don King, citing a “long count” when Tyson floored Douglas in the 8th, tried to have Douglas stripped of the title! They only backed down when the public response was so overwhelmingly derisive. It’s also a bit much to say that the cuts “sealed Tyson’s fate” in those fights. We’ve seen fighters from Bobby Chacon, James Toney, Rocky Marciano (there are countless examples throughout boxing history) grit their teeth and win fights where it looked like they were bleeding to death. Tyson was just a psychologically fragile fighter who tended to come unglued in moments of adversity. I should have said that Holyfield was a cruiserweight who moved up to heavyweight. At any rate, there was a big weight gain and gain in muscle mass.

Armchair man, Hollyfield is huge. He was leaning in Tyson repeatedly and many say he was on steroids, which I believe is true. Leaning on a boxer is serious, it fatigues them. And leaning on a smaller boxer is career ending and dirty. Tyson told the referee and if you watched the fight the referee repeatedly told Hollyfied to stop leaning throughout the rounds, which he ingored repeatedly and then manipulated, repeatedly! Tyson became so frustrated he had nothing else to do. Many would have done the same. I wont have you further media demonise Tyson 25 years later with you faux 'non criticism' waiver! For a man of Formans size to have cheated like this just goes to show how pathetic he really was. Or his managers, who probably ordered it. Boxers are controlled.
You know nothing at all about this sport. Outside of youtube compilation videos of Tyson knockouts, how many fights have you even watched? Speaking of “dirty,” Tyson was an old hand at hitting after the bell, hitting an opponent while down, hitting on the break, forearm shivers, headbutts (Tyson has had points taken away for intentional headbutting), elbows, etc.

Holyfield showed great boxing skills in the first fight, this anaysis is heavily biased in Tyson's favour by stating that Holyfield won because of three factors - 'Tyson's lack of training, headbutts and steroids'. That's garbage.
Holyfield always wanted to fight Tyson since 1989 - he was ringside at the Tyson Douglas fight and expected and wanted to fight Tyson next, but Douglas won, and Holyfield wanted the belts to become havyweight champion, his lifelong dream.
He fought Douglas for the belts and was scheduled to fight Tyson in 1991, then Tyson withdrew through injury and was then sent to jail in early '92.
Holyfield always knew how to beat Tyson. Anyone who's boxed at a decent level should know that he beat Tyson with counter punching and footwork.Tyson could only fight coming forwards. Listen to the commentary of the experienced Ferdie Pacheco in the Showtime fight commentary when Holyfield stuns Tyson with a big right hand and then stops him in the next round - he skilfully caught Tyson coming forwards square on. That wasn't fluke, it was a tactic he had specifically practiced.
Holyfield beat Tyson with skill, and he would have done the same if they fought before Tyson went to prison. This guy to be blunt is clueless, and I'd guess has never boxed a round in his life, but is talking like he's an experienced expert.

That video is inadvertently hilarious. The position of Tyson fans seems to be that Holyfield is simply not allowed to fight, and that anything he does other than letting himself get run over is some sort of offense against the cosmic order.

Yet the best refs in the world at the time, and every pundit and trainer watching the fight saw no problem. Mike could've adjusted to the style clash but couldn't. Also i dont buy all sports people are taking it. this has never been proven. If it was true Balco would of never had cutting edge results like with Marion jones since EVERYONE is taking it including her competition. but marion blew away her competition. Holyfield appears to be a cheat. So Mike Tyson is ranked higher now.

I had to chuckle a little bit at the assertion that Tyson made no excuses for his loss to Douglas. Tyson and Don King, citing a “long count” when Tyson floored Douglas in the 8th, tried to have Douglas stripped of the title! They only backed down when the public response was so overwhelmingly derisive.
It’s also a bit much to say that the cuts “sealed Tyson’s fate” in those fights. We’ve seen fighters from Bobby Chacon, James Toney, Rocky Marciano (there are countless examples throughout boxing history) grit their teeth and win fights where it looked like they were bleeding to death. Holyfield himself needed 36 stitches against Larry Holmes, and beat Ray Mercer and Michael Moorer while dealing with cuts at least as bad as Tyson’s. Tyson was just a psychologically fragile fighter who tended to come unglued in moments of adversity.
Without intending to be rude, this video is an example of what I’ve seen noted on a lot of boxing forums I’ve been on since the 90s-Tyson fans tend to be just Tyson fans; they’re not really “boxing fans.” (Not knowing how to pronounce Bobby Czyz’s name, calling Holyfield a middleweight,etc).
Fair point. However, they gave that up pretty quickly. Tyson always maintained that Douglas fought a good fight, and that he wouldn't take anything away from him. The takeaway is that Tyson blames himself for that fight, not the ref, though King did raise that complaint, as you point out.

@@Revelation1316you don’t know a lot about boxing. Cuts can cause fights to be stopped but Tyson’s was not even particularly bad. We’d be here all day listing the fighters whose fate was not “sealed” by cuts around the eyes (many of which were much worse than Tyson’s here).
The level of adversity that Tyson faced here should not have caused the complete mental breakdown that it did. He was always fragile.

I heard that the Tyson camp and Don King picked Mills Lane for the ref and that they tested Holyfield for steroids so there's that but thanks for not buying into the headbutting nonsense because there were no clear intentional headbutting!
At least according to Tyson, his camp did not want Mills Lane. But it's not like they get to choose the ref. And with that said, I cannot find any fault with how Lane officiated the fight.
Yes their was. It was masked. So was Hollyfield constant leaning. He was told to stop 8 or more times and didnt. This is compelling the headbut was deliberate.
@@Revelation1316 there was one intentional headbutt that was actually initiated by Tyson which was the one that the ref warned Holyfield about but there was no warning against either fighter moving forward with their heads down and is not an intentional headbutt. If you Tyson fan girls would look at the fight objectively you will see that Holyfield was the clear decisive winner of the fight and the only defense you can give Tyson is that he ( like he have done in other matches) underestimated Holyfield and didn't train as hard as he should have but even that is no excuse but would be more credible than the headbutting nonsense!

However, in the years since, as people who actually saw that first fight live on 11/9/96 get older and don’t engage as much in online opinion-forming discourse, and Tyson gains new young fans through those RUclips knockout compilation videos, Tyson fanboys have done a very good job of putting a quasi-asterisk next to a fight that was clear and decisive on the night.
