Couldn't you just... connect the first pumper discharge right to the second one?? Why do you need to loop it back through a several thousand dollar valve?

You would then need to stop the flow of water, disconnect from the hydrant, reconnect the attack truck's supply hose to the discharge of the pumper truck, set up a 2nd supply to the pumper, ensure all connections are tight, then reopen the hydrant. This allows all of that to be done WITHOUT interrupting the flow of water and in turn interrupting the fire attack.

You can but there's more risk. If the relay pumper fails, you lose all water at the fire ground while the failed pumper is swapped out. With a hydrant assist, water continues to flow if the relay pumper fails but with lower pressure. A new pumper can be quickly brought in and connected to the hydrant assist to restore the boost.
