  • Without art and artists, comic books are just words. And what would be the point of that?
Ron Richards, Josh Flanagan, and Conor Kilpatrick talk about what makes up their favorite comic book art, what some of the early favorites were, and who is doing the best artwork in comic books today. The idea of art is certainly subjective, but there are a few things all three can agree on; things like Darwyn Cooke, for example.
From style to to storytelling, and artists who used to draw one way, and now do it another, we try to cover as much as we can.

As a young guy, almost a teenager, George Perez and Frank Brunner were two whose art I really took notice of. I loved, but was tired of Kirby in the mid-70s, so I looked for almost anyone "new" or distinctly different.

I think that the art style should depend on what era the comic book is set in

My favoirite artist would be Charles R. Knight. He is not a comic book artist but his backgrounds to me are masterpieces.
Then there's Hal Foster and Alex Raymond who'se styles I fell inloved when reading resues of his works on news journals back in late 80s early 90s. Raymond in particular inspired Jack Kirby who trully is my favorite comicbook artist because the worlds he would draw I haven't seen in any animation or film that I can compare them with. He was not only gifted but unique.

Art is very subjective. I have people look through my sketchbooks. No one person really likes the same sketch the most.

Quitely is my favorite, because of great depth, real detail(not that scratchy line bullshit), great paneling, and he draws unique looking people.

McFarlane is barely even "realistic", much less photo-realistic, his work is cartoony to a high degree. It perhaps has a higher degree of realistic "rendering", sort of subtly approaching "3d" art in a "plain nearly diagram-like 2d" - "fully-rendered 3d" spectrum of "realism".
