For me "Empty Daydream" is almost operatic in the way the lyrics and music tells a story. Everything ties in so beautifully and nothing feels out of place; even Miyako's "shadow" backing vocal feels necessary, if that makes sense. Great song writing and amazing talent all the way around.

Asami is a wonderful singer. She is very reminiscent of 80's and 90's R&B and Pop icons vocally. Her grasp of music theory allows her too meld her Soulful delivery into the Brilliance she and Lovebites delivers. This song has awesome vibes.

Some random observations: 1/ when I discovered Lovebites, I wasn't sure about Asami's voice - I usually don't really like this kind of voice, even if the talent is obvious. I needed a few songs to really appreciate it and now I couldn't imagine the band with another singer! 2/ Haruna is a master at "physical damage-free" playing - perfect position of the body, shoulders and wrists, that's how she can play those very demanding songs for two hours long despite her tiny stature 3/ her cymbal work is often understated she has a very expressive and creative cymbal playing 4/ Miyako ... many people don't notice that beside piano and guitar (and composition of course), she's also the main backup singer for Asami - Miho and Midori help too on simple vocals, but when there's complicated lines or harmonies, it's always Miyako. I'd like to hear her singing alone one day (I'm sure she does it for her baby, so yes for a lullaby 😀 5/ It's always interesting to listen with headphones because the mix is so good that you can always distinctly hear what the other guitarist is doing when one is soloing - and it's nearly never "simple rythm" parts. Same during the singing parts.

Lovebites is a superstar hit-factory. This song is an instant timeless classic, the day it was released. The songwriting is almost too perfect. It's like a team of Generation-X composers are writing this stuff. So many influences from the 80's. That's a big reason why we like it so much! So interesting that young Japanese women want to play this kind of music! It's not really from their generation, but they do teach this stuff in the music academy's in Japan. While music in the west is mostly mindless hip-hop beats, the Japanese are keeping real "music" alive. It's a blessing.

When I first Started listening to Lovebites, I didn't know if I was a fan of Asami's vocals, then I remembered that I also took a very long time to enjoy the band called Iron Maiden, for me it was also a vocal issue, once I got over myself and actually listened to what the singers respectively were doing, and their ranges etc.. it became clear to me that I was incorrect in my initial assessment and I'm much better for it concidering Lovebites has risen to be one of my favorite bands of all time, such incredible talent.

Always appreciate it when you have a channel, where the host has musical knowledge but does not make the reaction all about therm. It is such a good thing you carry out with your post production, by adding in script. This means you are not over pausing or mumbling too much while we watch and listen to the video you are reacting to.
This is not one of my favourite Lovebites songs but I believe it is one of their best constructed songs writing wise and the arrangement is first class.
Many thanks for your reaction and appreciation of Lovebites, as a band.

    LOVEBITES - Empty Daydream lyrics:
Memories I can’t erase still haunting me
Silently you stare with cold, empty eyes
    Falling down
    Breaking heart
    A growing addiction
    Just let me go away
Just let me go my way
Just let me go, I won’t become a doll you control
    I’m losing sight of me
    I’m losing sight of you
I’m losing sanity and I don’t know how I will go on
Nothing new, pretending not to know the truth
    Rendezvous, without emotion or heart
I won’t show how weak and sad I am inside
Even though I know it’s just silly pride
    Empty room
    Endless rain
    The end of a daydream
    You never call my name
    You never feel the same
You never make me feel like I deserve any love
    I’m waiting for the dawn
    I’m waiting for the time
I’m waiting for my bleeding heart to heal, so I can go on
Memories I can’t erase still haunting me
Silently you stare with cold, empty eyes
    Falling down
    Breaking heart
    A growing addiction
    Empty room
    Endless rain
    The end of a daydream
    Just let me go away
Just let me go my way
Just let me go, I won’t become a doll you control
    I’m losing sight of me
    I’m losing sight of you
    I’m losing sanity and I don’t know how I will…
    You never call my name
    You never feel the same
You never make me feel like I deserve any love
    I’m waiting for the dawn
    I’m waiting for the time
I’m waiting for my bleeding heart to heal,
    so I can go on

there is more than one reactor that says asami's vocals aren't their favorite - although i give you credit for acknowledging that she is an amazing singer. but then they hear the 'e' songs - edge of the world , epilogue and this one and a lot of them appreciate it much more. and on top of that miho and miyako's backing vocals knock this song out of the park and give a new perspective on what this band can do. jeezus you have a miyako pick. not fair !

They also back her vocally on the song Burden of Time and even Midori is singing on that song unlike here where she lets Miho and Miyako handle all the backing vocals. also in Burden of Time Miyako at one point plays the guitar and keyboards at the same time.

Great song. Very Dream Theater vibes when starting verses. Yes, Lovebites is mixed and mastered at Finnvox studios in Helsinki. They do many metal bands, Nightwish, Stratovarious, Sonatica Artica, etc. Burden of time - live studio, is a great song where you get all singing behind Asami.

I get what you're saying about Queensryche. There's a hint where they go into what you referred to as the open section where it sounds like a missing song from "Operation: Mindcrime." Wave Potter pointed out that this song reminded him of "Beat It," and that makes sense since Miyako wrote the song and is a fan of Jennifer Batten. I uploaded a couple of short Instagram clip compilations including Miyako playing the solo to "Beat It" plus another clip of her playing "Empty Daydream" on piano for about a minute. I'm not trying to promote my channel - what's there to promote? - but they're there if you'd like to take a look.
Regarding the Nightwish connection, all of LOVEBITES' releases are mixed by Mikko Karmila and mastered by Mika Jussila, both of Finnvox Studios. They've worked with Nightwish, Apocalyptica, and a bunch of others.

Lovebites will probably become one of your favourite bands, if not your favourite band. It happens a lot, even to people who don't like them at first, or don't like Asami's vocals at first. I got into Band-Maid in 2015, and by 2017 they were my favourite band (and Mary's Blood). Same year (2017) I discovered Lovebites, and by January 2020 (after they released Electric Pentagram) they were my new favourite band (and Mary's Blood) which was/is surprising since I've never really been a "metal" guy. I liked them right from the start, but there are lots of people in the "Wolfpack" who didn't like them right away. Since they've gone on hiatus, Nemophila have become my new favourite band (and Mary's Blood, and Lovebites). I still love Band-Maid, but for me they peaked in 2018 even though they've become a lot more creative and adventurous since then.

Glad you liked it and start to like them more, took me some time too to really get it but now I love this band. I really thought you wouldn't like this song because you said during Set the world on fire that was the style (the thashy one) you want to hear from them and that's definitely not thrash metal lol. If you want something more or less in the same vibe try A Frozen Serenade, for something thrashy Thunder Vengeance, a song with some vocal harmonies and great riffs (and a favorite of mine) try Burden of time and for more Miyako piano awesomeness Swan Song with piano intro!

hearing this song again after a while, brings up another reason why I will miss Miho so much, not only founding member along with Haruna, but her vocals, I loved her vocals. who will replace those? this is why I am really pulling for a Japanese woman to fill the bassist spot, preferably Mina formerly of "Girlfriend" I know she can handle the bass lines, add more flair and some amazing solos and slap, her vocals would be even stronger, etc. IDK who else I can think of that can fill all the angles that Miho did. Wishful thinking I know, but that'd be my pick. (assuming she'd be interested, audition, etc. ) but no doubt I will miss Miho going forward no matter who joins.

I totally get it, Ryan. Asami is so tiny, and her range is so high that she just sounds 'different' in some registers - especially when she goes lower (NEVER bad or off key, but 'different' because she is Asami, who happens to be 4'10" and 'maybe' 90 lbs soaking wet). But her breathy straight vocals are just beautiful, and you could illustrate a textbook with her Clear High Belts (I am Convinced that she must have Perfect Pitch). And even on the lower intensity songs like this, that hidden POWER is bubbling under the surface, giving her vocal presence extra depth. As a musician/producer I LOVE this band, and each individual member for what they bring to the table. Including Miho - such a great loss, but in reality the easiest of the 5 to replace without dramatically changing the band's sound. I think the hardest part to replace will be Miho's Commitment to making the band sound Metal (which I suspect may be why she left). I am praying for a positive resolution to the crisis coming out of this Hiatus.

I love Asami's voice, as long as she stays in her lower register. But when she goes high, especially the vowel "a", she can get that strangled cat sound that is a bit grating.
It's possible it also has something to do with singing in a foreign language. Take a listen to the two versions of Bravehearted. I really like the Japanese version better. As far as I know, it was their only Japanese release.

Some may disagree but Midori / Miyako are the best duo out there today as far as I'm concerned and there's not many metal bands that can pull this off. What's really impressive about them is they can do it all - thrash, power, progressive, and ballads - and it all sounds great! Not many others can say the same, back in the day (80s), you'd have to listen to different bands to get the different genre sound, not with these ladies.
You should check out some of their prog stuff.

Oh, I meant to ask, what is Midori doing at 7:03? I get the part where she starts with the pick slide, but it looks like she somehow continues it with the side of her right hand while doing hammerons with her left. I feel like I don't understand what's going on there, or maybe I'm just over-complicating it?

Sliding it during this changes the harmonic notes that sound. Similar moving your hand up and down the neck

    Hotel California on steroids!
But, sadly, they are not for me...
Four statues, a mobile drummer and songs that do not inspire.
Understand: I have really tried with this band, but they have nothing for me.
My heart and soul were captivated, uplifted and reborn by a different five - piece Japanese all girl rock band.
    Moi, moi....

@kit Weng Wrong. Most music comes from the classical period. So everything after that era is "stealing"? Chords, scales, modes, everything. All written a very long time ago.

@kit Weng The legal side of this is getting horribly bad. It's being abused by corrupt companies and dirty lawyers. It should take a lot more than a few notes strung together to justify a copyright claim. But that's the sad times we are living in.

Power metal vocals. I usually ruin my reactions to them by talking about it....

    • @MaartenT

It has always been the same for me as well. I am typically not a huge fan of the more "epic" higher power metal vocals or melodies (so I am not a huge fan of a lot of the chorusses). I think Fuki from Unlucky Morpheus is an other great example of this. I really like the musicianship and a lot of the music from Unlucky Morpheus (I absolutely love what Jill brings to the table on the violin), but it depends on the day and my mood if I'm up for her vocals. Nothing against her though, I think she is a great vocalist, just not 100% my style.
That being said, I am actively trying to remedy this by buying CD's and blurays of a lot of different Japanese band's music that have more of this style of singing/music writing in the hope of either getting used to it or to be able to once and for all accept that it's not for me. I bought the physical releases to force myself to give them an honest shake.
Some of the bands I bought stuff from inlude Lovebites, Mary's blood, Unlucky Morpheus, Fate Gear, Destrose, Aldious, ... And I am starting to get more used to it and actually start to enjoy some of their songs quite a bit, especially from Lovebites, Unlucky Morpheus and Mary's Blood. I have always had a lot of respect for the musicians and vocalists in those bands, but their vocal styles (from what I heard before) just didn't click with my personal taste.
The more ballady type of songs are still not my thing, that goes for most bands in general, and I do still prefer more midrange vocals over soaring higher vocals. Asami seems to have changed her vocal style a bit over the years from what I can hear and I prefer her newer style over the older ones.
But I have to say the Lovebites Heavy Metal Never Dies bluray and specifically the song Set The World On Fire is what made my ears perk up and made me buy some more of their stuff. A lot of their music is still not completely for me, but I really like their more thrashy songs and I absolutely love Set The World On Fire. That last solo by Miyako reminds me of Slayer for some reason and I absolutely love it.

@@RyanMear , have to disagree with you here. Asami is actually a more well trained R&B singer than a woman who sings Power Metal. My favorite song by Lovebites is "Inspire" because Asami's vocals remind me more of Teena Marie, Mary J Blige and the late Minnie Ripperton. I can think of NO POWER METAL SINGER who could pull off that vocal performance on Inspire.

That's probably why I like this song so much. It's not a powermetal vocal song, and she sound fantastic and comfortable!
