My father bought a Gameboy Colour for me about twenty years ago. I played this game a lot, though not being able to survive till the end. Two months ago my father died, I am now watching this video and think of him. I want to cry. Only now I know he did so much for me so that I could have such beautiful memory.
One of the most ambitious ports of all time. To even think about porting an snes game that uses so many of its built in sprite capabilities and tech to the OG gameboy... whoever thought of this was an absolute madman
aa yes. super probotector ported to the game boy as probotector 2 finished that game but it was hard. as for later, on the game boy advance contra advance the alien wars ex.
@@dr.decker3623 I did play the original SNES game, and of course it is superior. It isn't fair to compare an SNES game to a Gameboy port, but this is still really impressive for a system of this stature-
My mom gave to me a '200 in 1' cartridge in the mid 90's and Contra was one of the games. Along with Aladdin, Mario Land, Alley Way, Solomon Club, Pitman, Tiny Toon Wacky Sports, I still remember a password for the last level on Easy mode where you start with 7 lifes, 5 bombs and a flamethower. It's DWSW
The NGB/GBC had a very extensive library of titles; logic dictates that you will probably not try/play all of the Gameboy/Gameboy Color until you do (at least in my honest opinion). There are tens and hundreds of titles for many consoles / handhelds that I have yet to see or play ... because A: I have other things to do and B: I don't currently have the financial means to buy hundreds of electrical video game titles. Happy gaming; don't let anyone tell you that this hobby isn't worth your time or that any of these titles merit a study/quick look !
yeah sucks that anybody can just develop whatever game they want today as it results in mediocrity. found some on android that were rip offs of mario and sonic. they suck
@DaJaeff This version of Contra 3 is developed by Factor 5, a German company known for Turrican and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. This was one of their projects with Konami (The others were International Super Star Soccer Deluxe for the Genesis and Animaniacs for the GameBoy)
That is really cool. I didn't know they made this, and it looks like a fun game. I'm surprised how similar they were able to make it to the snes version. Thanks for putting it up =)
One of the best ports for GB ever made (especially if we compare it with the aberrant port for GBA, which is not even the original game by replacing some levels with some of Hard Corps).
Nope, Contra - Hard Corps and Shattered Soldiers is the best in my OPINION, because of the story, Hard Corps is the sequel of Contra III, Shattered Soliders had a good story.
This is definitely the lesser known of the Contra 3 games, overshadowed of course by the SNES original but also by the GBA version that came much later. Konami has all but forgotten about this port.
Oh, and Stage 3's is also pretty good, too. Before I found the ROM of Contra 3 for the SNES, my youngest brother's Game Boy was my introduction to Contra 3's music. I was impressed by the tunes back then, and when I played the SNES ROM, I was not too disappointed. Although I think that Stage 2's theme could've been adapted for the SNES version a bit.
Why this great Contra game not included on Contra Anniversary Collection on my Switch?! c'mon Konami you must give an update/dlc to ad this gb game to us to become satisfied..
NOPE, the aliens are taking over planet earth =\. But the reasonable ones who are innocent are, Dr. Wily(megaman)Giygas(earthbound series) and KingDeDeDe(kirbys adventure)
Both OG Gameboy Contras are great. I was just thinking about if either had a 2 player mode on them? I have both but no link cable...I also dont have 2 carts. More reason to buy an Everdrive. There were some pretty cool little game copiers that companies made back in the day for Gameboy so you could copy your game onto the provided cart with re-writable memory and play your game 2 player (with another Gameboy and link cable)
Something that distracts me about this ports is that the sound driver Factor 5 used seems very similar to Pokémon RBY's, and as a result different to most of the other Konami's GB titles, so my brain hears this as Pokémon Contra 3 haha.
Came here for the music of Stages 2 and 4 (both overhead missions). RUclips's censors removed a few vids relating to those two tracks. Idiots. Can't we all have nice things every now and then? >_
How did I not know about this game I knew it was on SNES and I knew about operation C but I didn't know this was on gameboy....📝*notes* "buy Contra 3 alien wars for gamboy"
Contra 3 on the GB was fine for me, the graphics are fine, the gameplay is very slow-paced for me, so I did a 1.25 speed to make it like the SNES one, and the Soundtrack had good porting on it, so I call it a decent port, but why did they made it slow-paced? I mean look at Operation C, its engine is a great port of Super C on the NES, and its was fast-paced, enjoyed that on the GBC back then. Why did Konami picked Factor-5 for the port not Ultra Games like Op-C instead?
Ultra Games was an in-house developer group at Konami. It's not a separate company. I think they specifically worked on home console games rather than arcades. Factor 5 is well known for pushing consoles to their limit, often making ports of games that you wouldn't expect on that console. I'm sure Konami was really busy at the time so they turned development over to a reliable third party. But, that's just a theroy.... a GAME... never mind
Ultra Games only existed because Nintendo at the time had a policy that publishers could only release a certain number of games per year...Konami didn't like this so they invented Ultra Games to publish twice as many titles per year.
"why did they made it slow-paced?" Probably because old LCD screens were prone to ghosting. If you moved an object across the screen too quickly on the original Gameboy, it was practically invisible.
My father bought a Gameboy Colour for me about twenty years ago. I played this game a lot, though not being able to survive till the end.

I'm shocked how the sprite work is actually well detailed for its time.
aa yes. super probotector ported to the game boy as probotector 2
finished that game but it was hard. as for later, on the game boy advance contra advance the alien wars ex.
I can't believe my eyes. This is the quality of the SNES game on a GameBoy!! Damn, even though we had less, we did more!
lol,.. you haven't played The Real Alien Wars on the SNES have you? this game is garbage. play any other than this and FOrce.

I'm honestly surprised how faithful this is to the Super Nintendo version.
it was one of my fav games for the GB during my childhood.
Tito Schmidt - AOR Melodic Rock same buddy

I didn't know that this was released for game boy.
Me too 🥺🥺

me too. the sound effects and the retro vibe makes it more creepier

@@cheeszy4696 hi
Mine is different, I was scared by playing Doreamon 2 gb game because of monsters are creepy.
if this version was the one you played, then you would have never wanted to play the snes version
All these years and I never knew Contra III was on the gameboy until now
Pyoro64 lol, all these years and I just realized this game was on Super Nintendo. I only knew this version growing up :/

Wow this is really faithful to the Super NES game
The level of faithfulness to the SNES original is impressive.
Most epic over-the-top game I ever played when I was a kid! When games were hard, unique and offline!
yeah sucks that anybody can just develop whatever game they want today as it results in mediocrity. found some on android that were rip offs of mario and sonic. they suck

Wow! Faithful rendition of the SNES Port! Can't believe the humble GB still impresses me in 2023!
Amazing how the music really pushed the gameboy. I mean wow, they really tried to do it just like the SNES version.
The music is so classic, nostalgic
CHILDHOOD , this is one of my first contra games when i was a kid on the gbc
Amazing sprite work for the lightweight og game boy performance
This is a decent port, even if stuff is missing. The boss theme is way better than the original though.
Robert Binnie It's even better compared to the GBA one, that really was rushed.
+MetalSonicodraco7342 I liked the hard corps stages tho
Robert Binnie it's cool how the second half of the boss music sounds like the start/pass word music from Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest.
Not really, the original Contra 3 boss theme got your heart pumping, this one sounds like Bill Rizer was depressed, and the bosses were too.
Boss themes don't sound better on this version. So yeah it's not.
Stage 1 - City 0:46
Stage 2 - Ruined Highway 3:38
Stage 3 - Steel Mill Factory 6:51
Stage 4 - Desert - 13:03
Stage 5 - Red Falcon's Abyss 16:08
The Contra games on GB were fantastic
Those special effects are amezing for a gameboy but the boss music just works on my nerves, phew.
That is really cool. I didn't know they made this, and it looks like a fun game. I'm surprised how similar they were able to make it to the snes version. Thanks for putting it up =)
To be a port of a Super Nintendo game the truth is well achieved, although it is easier than its original version.
Carajo lo recordaba con mejores graficos jaja.
Que epocas :')
So they didn't attack aggressively in this version?
DaJaeff Well the game is from Konami (a japanese company) but it was ported for Konami by Factor 5 (a german company) for the Game Boy
Love the music for this game espically the bosses musics
This is 100% nostalgia right here
*>Perfect game to play on a TI-89 platinum.*
(Especially since it's easier than the original game.)
played it for years, almost every day beating this final boss xD
Masterpiece ever. Greatness
This is impressive for a Game Boy console!
the over head view was way better in this version. i dont think they needed mode 7 on the snes version.
Yeah a lot of things in contra 3 just felt like glorified tech demos of the snes' capabilities with sprites.
this was my very first game boy pocket [green] game i ever had.... the nostalgia ty
OMG I finally found the game i played non-stop when i was young ! thank god!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pretty impressive for a game boy game
Love that game. Used to play in the car
0:34 Bill rizer looks like Hank Hill lol

The only GOOD contra - game I know.
WAAAA??!!! Not even Super C is good?
EYTPS It's only MY opinion, no need to take it too seriously.
I know, I just a little surprised, that's all

- Contra (NES)
- Super C (NES)
- Contra 3 (SNES, GB)
