Already in March 2014, the Wolfsburg-based car manufacturer Volkswagen presented a concept study for a new compact SUV at the Geneva Motor Show. It should take until the 23rd of August 2017 until the presentation of the 1st production vehicle. The vehicles of this trend-oriented series were ordered from mid-September 2017, the first deliveries took place on 25 November of the same year.

The agile Wolfsburg is built in the Portuguese Setúbal for the European market. Vehicles intended for the Asian market are manufactured at FAW-Volkswagen in Foshan, China.
The biggest competitors of the VW SUV model are the BMW X1, the Audi Q2 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Also, the PEUGEOT 2008 and the Renault Captur are in direct comparison, but have no four-wheel drive. The T-Roc moves in the basic equipment lines in the lower price segment. Even in the highest line, the base price has not yet reached that of the competitors of Audi or BMW. Thus, the model is a comparatively cheap SUV.
