Yep for desktop always PC. I do prefer MacBooks as my laptop choice. The new M1's shine best when they are in laptops. For me battery life and quietness is important in a laptop so M1 Macbook's are the choice for me.

If you want an Apple computer where you can change and repair the Mac Pro with the M1 ultra/pro/Max is coming up (maybe during the WWDC) the Mac studio is the new Imac
With Thunderbolt you can easily add a 4TB Gen 4 SSD if you want to. You do have to buy a Thunderbolt compatible enclosure, but it’s just as quick as directly connecting it to a a PCIe bus. That doesn’t mean I think the Apple studio is great value I’m just pointing out there are ways around upgradeability.
But this is not the way the industry is going. Even in a few situations it is getting difficult to upgrade because standards change so often or new chips generations need a different socket and MB and those iterations have just speeded up over the years. That and more companies are going to be adding more parts to the SOC because otherwise they just won’t be able to compete on performance. The real question to be asked is that as the process allows more in less space ie 10nm to 3nm why the price of the SOC is not coming down. We are currently not seeing the benefit of like for like competition and Apple still has an advantage in software and eco system integration.
The real problem is that the SOC needs to be available to upgrade so you can keep the case MB etc and have the output upgradeable, so that you are not throwing away the case power supply etc. Nothing that Apple or other Manufacturer’s couldn’t do but they have no reason to. That is where governments come in to regulate, but we all know how that would go down in the US. Most likely the EU would pick up the regulation mantle.

You could keep the ultrawide for the real estate and then use something like an AJA T-TAP or Blackmagic design output device to send the Program Monitor feed to a broadcast display (or even a nice TV) with more accurate color via HDMI or SDI.
Resolve 18 just dropped and there's a ton of optimizations for the Mac chips, would be interesting how much improvement is it over Resolve 17 and even the PC running Resolve 18.
I went from an iMac Pro to a Ryzen 9 3900X back when the R9 processor came out. Apples optimizations ran circles around my Ryzen, even though the Intel iMac Pro specs were a fraction of what my PC had to offer. So it's very interesting to see what happens.

I decided to stay with Premiere v15 and it has been better than my old imac...but but...I'm so excited to hear great that Premiere pro is finally really optimized for m1...which version are you running here? V22.3? I wish I liked FCP X but I just prefer the simplicity of Premiere...so...also you have the M1pro mbp too correct? I know this studio ultra is much faster but the m1pro is the best laptop I ever owned and powerful enough for now- do you do a lot of editing with the m1pro? Do you find that the studio ultra "crashes" the M1pro? I'm thinking about a Studio M1max, but I think I will wait to see what new chips Apple releases. I hear there is a M2 chip coming soon...and I'm sure there will be a M2 Max sometime next year? I wish there was a new imac with m1 max inside but that's not going to happen-the Mac studio and the display are the "replacement" for a lot more money! oh well...Thanks for the video!

I for one made the move as a long time Apple user to PC. It was before the Studio came out but I'm very happy with my Ryzen 3950x and RTX 3080Ti. Windows 11 has an awesome instant multiple desktop switching that you add labels. For non-video centric people PC is great especially if you wanna start dipping your toes in 3D and of course gaming. For development, it is awesome to be able to buy cheap RAM for virtual machines and have the luxury of having every app you might need open at all times making app switching instant.

For color-accurate monitors, check out Asus ProArt. I've got a 32" 2k 165Hz for $750, it's 100% sRGB and rec709, 95% of DCI P3, and factory tuned to be color accurate Delta-E
did you use the nividia encoder in resolve, it speeds up everything. I've exported a 400gb 4k file/timeline in 10 minutes (h.265/nividia encoder)

Thank you, this was an excellent video. Sorry, to be so late to the party but, your comments are "right-on-point". Tried to order a Mac Studio but found out there was a 5-month back-log. So, I picked up a trash can size 2014, 8-core/D-700 Mac Pro with 64 GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD for $1,200 and paired it with my Apple 20-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display and everything works great together. No T-2 security chip to worry about, can upgrade the processor, can upgrade the RAM, and, I can also upgrade the SSD, etc. (smile...smile).
For 1200 you can get a way way way better PC so I hope you need macos A LOT
There are colour calibrators out there though, I'd suggest giving those a try for your current monitors!

Nice video! However, I don't think most of the concern over the SSD is about user customization or upgradeability. The most worrying aspects are right to repair (the fact that Apple is consistently anti-repair doesn't mean we shouldn't stop calling it out!) and reliability. After all, these machines are marketed to professionals. With SSDs, a drive failure can mean having to get a new one while trying to recover the data on the old one. With proprietary storage, you'll likely face downtime until you can get it replaced by Apple, and I suspect data recovery will look pretty rough.
And even so, it's just strange to me to have pro-grade machines without room for expansion! 6000$ is a hefty investment, and you'll likely want to keep it long enough that your needs may change or you might just want more on-board storage. But hey, that's just priorities!
How many cores actually get used simultaneously during those video exports on either machine? It would also be interesting to know how the fastest 12th gen Intel CPU ( i9-12900KS) would compare.
That LG monitor on the pC has my interest BUT I have two 31" LG HD monitors and see no reason to switch. Thoughts?

has anyone used the Studio Max with Premiere beta version? I have the 2017 iMac 40gb and on the premiere beta it is horrendous. Just want to make sure the max can handle it far better than my 2017 version.
13:34 Depends on the era you talking about. Like Apple in 2006-2012 for example. You absolutely could open your Macbook Pro or Mac Pro and add in whatever you like. (Well, SSD, RAM, Storage and for the Mac Pro: GPU and other PCIe cards...)

Regarding the logitech craft keyboard not connecting when setting up the studio, I'm pretty sure that if you use a logitech USB dongle that's already been paired to the keyboard/mouse on another computer it'll work.

You lifted your mac out of the box and started work and did the work of a specially build pc w your stylish glasses kit. The only thing I worry about is the wear and tire on the ssd drives they use internally, you cannot just order or buy locally there drives.
For me, there is the "Unix" option that macOS provides (playing with pytorch and image generation right now), amd CaptureOne. I bought the cheaper one - half the size of your processor, but with 64gb of memory. External SSD for bulk storage. Been moving out stuff that is not speed critical to the external and symlinking back into /Applications or whatever. Gotta love the ports on the front for backups. Went back to hard drives - the spinny kinda. Hard to beat 2x4tb drives for $200. One on site, one off. Never left connected so as to avoid ransome ware if I'm lucky. Now if I get pytorch to not be so nVidia centric!!

My 2018 ThreadRipper build is still serving me somewhat, but I notice a low of slow downs in PremierePro. And I'm hardly even editing 4K footage at this point.
The Mac Studio seems like a really good value for an upgrade. I just don't know if I'd really quickly regret not being able to have all my internal hard drives or being able to game when work is done.
But both
Davinci Resolve added a fix to color and gamma shift for exporting from Mac. Use Rec.709 A for output color space. This will fix the gamma shift. Also in general preferences on user tab click use Mac displays and/or always tag Rec.709 A
I was gonna get Mac Studio. My biggest concern was that many software tools have yet to be adapted to M1 chips.
I had the same concerns before mine finally arrived (yesterday) and I set up my workflow in AE - which the version I need for my work isn't optimised yet. Only a handful of the plugins I use are updated, and the version of the app itself is still X86.
Let me say that Rosetta is so good you won't be able to tell it's being emulated! If it works on X86 MacOS then you more than likely have nothing to worry about.
@@TyroSean This is inaccurate, Rosetta is not a particularly good solution in software like AE,
there are lots of crashes and a significant drop in performance.
I do not understand what is the point of buying an expensive computer for less performance and compatibility issues with an unsupported plugin.
It amazes me how people give up backwards compatibility because of the hype of a product, instead of focusing on a product that works for you.
@@uribak9144 As I said, I've experienced no crashes and actually a massive gain in performance compared to my 2018 Mac Mini (which is admittedly a low bar but I think a lot of people will be upgrading from old hardware). It even renders the same AE project faster than my workstation with a 24 core Threadripper and 3080!
If it's for ML, don't buy a Mac. PCs are far superior. Check a channel called Alex Ziskind. He compares ML performance.
It is bad especially if your doing software development outside the apple ecosystem. For instance Homebrew still is ok but I needed to use GCC for a class and Rosetta made it compile for Intel but it looked for the arm header files it was awful. I have a second computer but still not perfect.
Love this, amazing performance on the Mac studio for it's size.
A better way to compare: $5000 Mac Studio vs $2500 Windows PC. Mac will be *utterly* *defeated* .

An inexpensive SpyderX or X-Rite should fix the display issues -- the Apple just comes better calibrated but the higher end LGs are also excellent.

Kinda random but I love that Davinci is becoming more common. Premeiere has become so frustrating that I love there is an alternative that hopefully ends up making both programs better
Software optimisation is always going to vary. FCP X being the fastest on a Mac is a given. Good that Resolve is picking up. It won't be perfect no matter what but always good to see the tests...
Macs got so fast for video editing, I love it and I really don't need it to be modular.
I have a friend debating leaving apple since he runs premiere pro, and is looking to drop about $6k on a PC and he specifically wants the upgradability of the PC over the Studio. Not to mention the price difference in storage and overall capacity.
My ‘08 Mac Pro is neglected in a cupboard 350 days a year and only comes out for data recovery or troubleshooting other friends older macs.
Soooo...you mentioned you have work arounds on the PC for all the stuff you used to do on a Mac...that would be a nice video to see.

The classic Mac Pro and the non-retina unibody Macbook Pro, both manufactured until 2012, are probably the most upgradable computers Apple has ever made in the desktop and laptop categories respectively. I own and still use both of them.

I can also switch SSD's/HDD's and other PCIe related cards with my Mac Pro 2019. I was so happy when they announced that beast of a machine and i'm still very happy with it! I have the 16-core with 8TB SSD internal storage, 96GB of RAM and an AMD W5700X for the GPU. Which is the only bottleneck. I didn't feel like i needed more at the time of the purchase because i'm more in to music producing than in to video-editing. Still though, i'm seeing a lot of peaks, even with the simplest tasks. But i've seen another RUclipsr with the same problem and apparently if you use a third party screen with another resolution setting than those that the Mac prefer, it apparently takes a big hit in performance. Didn't know that! Anyway, i wonder how the new Mac Pro will be. Because i really hope we can at least have some customization, like having a different GPU or adding a bit of RAM and Storage.

The Mac’s of old used to be upgradable and easily repairable. With my old Mac book pro, I upgraded the ram, hard drive and even converted the cd drive into another another hard drive a slot. Just wish the Mac Studio was at least easily repairable. It’s a very nice machine but I’m put off by its lack of repairability and upgradeability. Since Tim Cook took over apple the Mac’s have been getting less and less repairable over time.
I did exactly that on my mid-2012 13" MBP.

It’s tricky.. because the unrepairability is exactly what makes them so good now.. and with the potential to last a lot longer.
But, one thing is for sure, they COULD work to make it more modular and repairable and for parts to be affordable TO repair. We don’t need to be able to replace the cpu if the whole board is modular and affordable… and even upgradable… but they are against right to repair in its deepest meaning.

I swear I must be unlucky but Premiere Pro on My Mac studio is basically unusable. Can't export with hardware encoding turned on, and the timeline and general interface is hella slow, honestly evey click is like a full second behind!. I'm only using Sony A7iv footage (10 bit / 140mbs / 4:2:2) Wish there was something I could do, I love Premiere and don't want to move video editor!
Apple used to be about the DIY side of things when they started. Like you mention though, it's not like they have been like that in a decade by now. I would also argue that if you need an editing rig like this, it is a very good option and you should probably have a 10G NAS to store stuff long term and have a backup of that somewhere else. I am not a video editor/YT content creator. I have done a lot of code development, and for what I do a PC makes more sense. Where I (now) live, buying nice hardware is impossible pretty much; Importing a video card with the current shortages is insane, it is cheaper to fly to the US and back again by about 200%... I have my iPad, for the rest, Android stuff.
Use what works for you. I had a Mac Mini (pre-Intel days) and it was great for what it was. the latest M1 stuff is pretty darn awesome.

One of the most helpful Mac Studio reviews I’ve seen! Proxy generation and Sony footage tests are super relevant to my documentary work. Not too much 8K Canon R5 footage coming across my desk lol. Timeline performance and overall quality of life opinions are really useful too. Thanks for keeping it fun and helpful and staying away from the fake controversy outrage garbage a lot of other people put on YT.
For most creators, the Mac Studio with the M1 Max is the way to go. By going with the M1 Ultra you get hit hard by diminishing returns. Whereas, the Max chip price to performance value is remarkable.
On a Windows PC, there's a big difference between 8-core and 16-core cpu for creators. And it only costs $250 USD to basically *double* cpu performance.
Too bad that on M1, double the cores means pretty much nothing.
@@DerekDavis213 Funny pov, considering many videos show exact doubling of performance with double M1 cores. That doesn’t happen in all cases, simply because of how software works, which is no different on windows.

When you go from 8-core Ryzen to 16-core Ryzen, productivity software sees an 80 to 90% boost in performance.
But then again, Windows 10 Professional is far superior to macOS. Microsoft has a much larger team of software engineers working on the flagship OS, compared to the guys in Cupertino.
Windows is how the *WORLD* gets the job done, 24/7. macOS is a toy in comparison.
very nice video. but I did not get the proxy /editor analogy. Whenever I do proxies the files I get are larger as the raw files were very compressed. I guess you do it differently and just keep the codec and just lower the resolution massively. The resolution to me is less of an issue as you can just select "play at 1/4", no need to create new files.
Proxies can be made for 2 reasons - to make editing easier (think pro res or DNxHD). Those files will be larger and easier to edit. Or reason #2 make them lower resolution and less quality (but still compressed) so the proxy is only a fraction of the size of the original media so it’s easier to upload and download the footage for a remote editor. So a 150GB project turns into 30GB. 30GB is much easier to downlOad from say google drive

Just to be clear, Sara, there was a point when Mac’s were VERY upgradable. Their enclosures were works of art with their simplicity. Remove the battery, loosen two screws, and you had complete access to your MacBook’s ram and hard drive. The cheesegrater Mac pros were equally easy. Do I wish things were like that still? Sometimes, but I can understand how the technology came at the price of flexibility. Does apple make more money this way? Of course they do. But with a bit of advance planning I have a computer that lasts me for 7-8 years.

In the timeline for the projects? It’s XAVC-L from the FX6 and then the a7s iii was XAVC HS 420 10bit from the second top down angle! Sometimes they were overlapping each other as a PiP with the A7S

To answer the posed question, yes, Apple has made entirely modular computers before. Every part inside my MacBook Pro, a laptop even, can be individually replaced, and I have done so over the years, which is why it runs better now than when I first got it. RAM, disk drive, hard drive, battery, motherboard with processors, jacks, and keyboard are all replaceable with little skill. Apple knows how, has done it before on mass produced items, and just doesn't now.
Sara if you don’t want to ditch the LG monitor just calibrate it properly because you’lol get the color accuracy instantly if just changing the display white balance properties to the ones they match your environment it’s the key to proper color like when you set the temperature in your camera when you record and just setting up properly the brightness and contrast makes a difference maybe not as big as white balance but it changes how the screen provides your image with the correct response to the lighting of the room.
And by the way I’m a huge Apple fan and they make incredible displays because they’ve found a way to make them look decently good no matter what product you’re using.

Mac studio is fast. But isnt your pc older gen intel? Ultra is brand new. May be it would have been nice to mention the gen differences?

Why I don't go with mac's is it all in one card build system.
Why if anything breaks you out of the computer., because the entire computer is on one card = motherboard.
We use Davinc resolve and it works supper on PC with windows 11 pro workstation edition. And the best part it's half the cost of Mac.

Even as a normal I do not feel the Studio Monitor is overpriced for a 5K monitor with all of its options inside the Apple garden world. The LG Ultra HD 5K Ultra Slim USB-C Monitor Widescreen LED IPS LCD w/ Webcam - Black - 27MD5KA-B that I purchased because Apple does not have "Pick Up, in store" option when I was going to purchase Studio Display The cost for the LG 27MD5KA-B model on Amazon is now from $1,319.95 to $1,560.00. Normal just look at places like Amazon, or BestBuy.
Then when it comes to the Mac Studio you have to choose the tools that work best for you. The one thing I like is like you said "Apple just works". The Apple Mac Studio running macOS/UNIX is solid, and a KISS solution other than the need to purchase the configuration that is going to work best for you.
I do not need the power of the Mac Studio. Young people talk about the price. Thing is in 1984 I purchased the original Macintosh for $ 2,500.00 that with inflation today would cost me around $6,764.87 on the introduction date of the Apple Studio lineup.
Again do not need the power so I purchased a setup that replaced my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) with 2TB SSD. I now have a MacBook Air M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 7‑core GPU, and 16‑core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage, CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock, and a LG Ultra HD 5K Ultra Slim 27MD5KA-B Monitor on a desk VESA arm.
One of the persons I use to work with always said when it comes to memory space, and storage "Crap will always expand to the space available to it".
I'm disappointed by the majority of reviews on RUclips for the Mac Studio. They degenerate into,
"I'm A vIdEo EdItOr NoW lEt'S bEnCh, oOoH lOoK aT ThE tImEs!!!!"
Great. Any monkey can do that. To your credit you mentioned the keyboard issue and the display calibration.
If performance alone determines how or why professionals get certain equipment, then they would all be power users. This isn't a "should you get a Mac or PC video". This is a performance comparison. The two best reviews I've seen on this product are by far LUCIDPIXUL and Laura Spender's reviews. They explained how they use it far beyond the mundane benchmarks.

It's 2022, and Apple still has poor ATD (attention-to-detail).

I WAS LITERALLY READY TO ORDER AN EDITING RIG FROM PUGET SYSTEMS TOMORROW. BUT HONESTLY FOR THE PRICE OF A PUGET PC I'D EXPECT NO COMPARISON TO AN OF THE SHELF "MAC STUDIO" SO... APPLE IT IS...
IMO, the biggest turning point is the OS. Even you, mentioned "comfort" and "stability" as your reasons to stay PC, is the OS, not the pc. Yes, there is people who likes to change around all the components and stuff, and "gamers" who likes RGB and liquid cooling systems and that's fine, there is a big market for that. But comparing a Mac to a PC, is not understanding at all, what a Mac or a PC should be.
BTW, my main Desktop is a Linux build over AMD products, and my portable is a MacBook Air M1.

The drivers for my Mytek and MOTO audio converters do not exist for Linux.
Also, for audio production; Most plugins just don't run on Linux.
Which is very, very annoying. Bitwig and Davinci Resolve however, do.
@@reptilespantoso Bitwig is huge, but expensive, and once you get jack running on linux you can run most of audio plugins, but yeah, linux its always tricky.
