I have see several tutorials on how to make selections to avoid fringes and a few that discuss removing the fringes by using remove matting and defringe. However, I have had horrible results with these techniques and usually either resorted to changing the background layer to a different blend mode or painting the fringe and accepting the hard fried edge look and then blurring the mask. The results are barely passable. I appreciate that this tutorial accepts the fact no matter the selection (I used channels to get the best selection possible) there will be some color cast on edges (I know this fact all to well). I am intrigued with the idea of two layers (one for paining outside mask and one for cloning inside). I look forward trying them out with my projects. This is different than anything I tried. Thanks.
What I love about these videos is you really have to pay close attention because there will be some tip like that, which just changes your whole workflow.
I discovered this technique a few months ago by just pure problem solving thinking. I do tons of subject masks for work, and this has done wonders for defringing more than just hair, but also clothing and color decontamination. I always wondered if I was the only one, but of course I was not because Mr. Umesh is a Photoshop guru! So nice to see self-taught skills also being learned by the community!
You explain things like a wise person yet not like an old person, instead with patience and care. I respect that about you. Keep up the good work Unmesh. ❤️
Rili Tili I have a degree in graphic design and I’ve learned more about photoshop from these videos than I did in 4 years of schooling... I want my money back lol
This technique has the advantage of being almost universally applicable. My technique is different, but less univesal. I start by making the best possible selection, never with the classic selection tools, but with the channel method where I try to increase the contrast to the best possible way, without frying the edges. Next, I make two layers using the same mask. The second layer is put in the normal blending mode. For the first layer I try to look for the blending mode that blends in the edges best with the underlaying background (note thus that I never correct fringes without first applying the final background layer). The blending mode depends on the nature of the background. Sometimes multiply helps, but it can be whatever mode. Next, I create a group from the second layer, and apply a mask. To this mask I apply a soft black brush and paint slightly around the edges so that only the blended edges of the first layer become visible. This lets the new background shine perfectly through the edges. If the same blending mode is not usuable for all the edges, cut up your image in pieces. Note that I did not come up with this technique. I thank RawExchange International for this super way of blending images in a new background. I hope this helps. Erwin
So happy to hear that you are proficient in PS. There are so many ways to achieve the same task on PS and yours is one of them too. Thanks so much for your feedback and watching.
Great work! When removing a colorful background, you should always look out for and remove color casts as well. In this image you can see a cyan color cast under her arm. It’s pretty easy to remove. Unmesh has a video on that too.
This really helped me a lot. I cut out koi fish for ads and some of the fin detail is a little tough to work with, this just made things so much easier. Thank you
This is the best method of all time!!!! Going forward, this is going to be my selection mask style. It is not real difficult and it gives you amazing and realistic results. I bet after ten tries I will become like second nature to me! Thank you Unmesh for sharing this!!!! You are correct, fringe shows up in about everything. I can see this best used for animals and people. I think channels will work best on landscapes. Your the best buddy! Moonpie
Wow! This is so cool to learn! I never thought about Blurring those loose strands of pixelated hairs! Thank you so very much!!! I saw one tut, by Russel Brown, I believe, where he removed the color from the fringe with the Hue Saturation Adjustment Layer, set on the Blues, in this case.
Thank you for your helpful videos. If I’m doing hair AND extending my backdrop (both from your videos) would I put these hair layers about the subject layer after I do my backdrop gradient?
Hey, thanks so much for your tutorials, they're really great and helpful! I was wondering if you could do some videos on "how to cut clouds out of sky" the best way possible, without leaving traces of the background and without butchering the smooth and fluffy edges of the clouds. :)
Our client does not pay for the time spent. I select a new layer with blending mode "colour" and paint over it in the adjacent colour. It doesn't matter if I get too far inwards and I save myself the effort of stamping. Or if I need to do it very quickly: New layer colour saturation, desaturate background colour.
To fix the teal cast on the bottom of her right hand. I usually paint on a clipped layer set to color blending mode some cloned or healing brush samples of fleshtone. Sometimes I need to rotate my clone source to match the grain direction and wish that I cold modify the key command of Shift Alt < or > as the increment is too small. Do you know of a better way/key command to rotate the clone source visually?
In case you are pressing the shortcut one at a time, try holding it down for a moment, increments will be much faster. To make it even faster open the clone source panel from 'Windows', just click and drag on the rotate value.
The painting technique can also be applied to removing fringes around a masked tree. I haven't found that it's necessary to also resort to the Clone Stamp tool in that case.
Hi i loved your style of explanation... in the above video u have shown trick to remove color from hair when its on plain background but what if same situation is when image is on other background like wedding time. As if some time we get color cast when we click images in wedding party then how to remove color cast specially from hair ends.. thanks it u can make video on it too...

Hi gang... anytime I try this the edges always look way too pixelated and choppy, still as if I just used the selection/magic wand tool. Whereas in his videos, even in the color range panel, the images are flawless and the edges are smooth. Obvi we want to start with the highest resolution, but is he using some kind of RAW photo files? Or is simply because I am in PSCs6 and he is in the latest version? Please advise. thank you!! :)

Brush blend mode > Overlay... Heaven sent, thank you for that! That makes masking significantly easier!
What I love about these videos is you really have to pay close attention because there will be some tip like that, which just changes your whole workflow.
You also may use a dodge tool for highlights and burn tool to darken the grey colors, for me it is sometimes even more convenient)

Even tho i already know how to do this i still watched everything just because you're so good
Light travels in a straight line. The "bending" effect is actually an optical illusion.

Thank you for your helpful videos.
If I’m doing hair AND extending my backdrop (both from your videos) would I put these hair layers about the subject layer after I do my backdrop gradient?
Clever. I just wonder why I was not clever enough to think about this obvious and easy solution by myself... :-)
Fez um bom trabalho, essa técnica com a clone ficou legal. Obrigado.
Who makes these intros? Dopeness 👏😎 Unmesh everything you teach in Ps is gold
Thank you so much for your tutorials, Unmesh. Unfortunately, the link to the sample image is broken--it leads back to your RUclips channel.

Wonder what result you'd get if you did a desaturated adjustment layer then painted the hair then used blend if. Hmmm
Great! Thank you so much !
I'm really like your channel..
Thank you so much dinda, I've got so many lessons here..
Simply u rock!
When I hold alt and click the mask, it wont turn black and white, just become selected.
What should I do with that? Could you help me please?
click on the mask and rasterize it. then try to hold alt or option and click!
Thank you so very much.
Interesting...do u prefer this over shifting the edge ?
It depends of what you are trying to accomplish.
Creative Me awesome...well FYI I'm a big fan
What was being eliminated before 4:21? I saw it but what problem did the first 4 minutes eliminate?
thank you. I can use the clone tool!
Thanks. Ypu are the man !
Select and mask with refine edge tool then using second technique of editing hair colours.
i would make it with hue saturation and work only with Cyan to remove this color
I could swear that I know that model! She looks like a model from the American Photo Model Shoot I attended a few years ago.
Amazing video
The painting technique can also be applied to removing fringes around a masked tree. I haven't found that it's necessary to also resort to the Clone Stamp tool in that case.
what is the hotkey for making the brush softer/harder?
I was not thinking about the background 😘
