I just did this project on my W221 s550 M278 and didn't take anything off to remove the cam magnets. Piece of cake. Also changed my cam position sensors and put sacrificial harness's between the cam position sensors and cam magnets. LOVE this car!
@@joepasquarello1273 I had the M278 engine so it was all just nuts and bolts. Maybe one or two of the bolts were in a tough spot but nothing unbearable where I had to remove anything. Substitute the E8 socket for a 1/4" (I think can't remember) combination wrench on the hard to get to bolt(s). Easy peasy just do not drop anything in the exposed openings once you've removed the cam magnets.
Great video man!! That’s a lot. I will be doing this on my 2008 c350 next week. All 4 of my cam magnets are leaking, will be replacing the can positioning sensor rings as well.
Great video!!! And this did not cost $15,000 that I was quoted at the Mercedes dealership. It is unreal that this is a known problem with Mercedes and there are no recalls.
Going to be doing this today, but having problems with reconnecting the ECU after checking for oil. When I reconnect the rear harness, the fan kicks on suddenly and I can’t get it to stop unless I disconnect.
Did you have any performance issues / check engine light on prior noticing the oil leak repair ? I do not have an check engine light on or many codes , however been getting terrible gas mileage and sluggish power band on my 2014 ML63 (M157 engine )
I’m getting oil from passenger side exhaust magnet oil leak I don’t know when they changed oil they spill some down or my magnet is truly leaking Should I try replacing o ring first before replacing whole magnet? Did you disconnect battery
Fixed the source of the oil leek but unfortunately the harness will also need replacing if the oil has already got as far as the ecu its badly contaminated and very soon all the faults will reappear
Saw a video on another channel.the other day. Same car same problem. Tiny seal in cam shaft sensor. The electric current actually carries the oil all the way to the ecm. And ruins it.
Thanks for this video Brother, I was changing the Magnets on the M276 W204 and couldn’t get the connectors off ! Thanks for the demonstration !!

Any tips you can share?

@@darrenwilliamson7944 I've got the M278 as well. I'm good at improvising...;-) Thanks!

I got the V6, luckily only 1 camshaft magnet is slightly leaking. I have been using the connector cleaner to keep the oil from moving on.

Eric, Great video !! Where is your shop at?

Question:
It's the rubber O-ring in the camshaft magnet that causes the oil leak. Could you just change the O-rings only in the camshaft magnets?
Yess you can just order it from mercedes but you will need new bolts for the camshaft
Saw a video on another channel.the other day.
Same car same problem.
Tiny seal in cam shaft sensor.
The electric current actually carries the oil all the way to the ecm.
And ruins it.
Does it ruin it? Or can it be cleaned? Oil should not be conductive...
"A common problem" means a very poor design
Very awesome video
Hey dude what’s the average cost for a job like that?
great vid bro!
good job and thnx
You don't cover the painted panels ? ugh not good.
