- The Solo Charleston competition at the International Lindy Hop Championships on August 28, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
The winners were:
1st - Juan Villafane
2nd - Nathan Bugh
3rd - Jo Hoffberg
That was great; I don't know how the judges could choose between so many talented -and diverse- Charleston dancers showing off. Awesome to everybody!
I see a lot of complaining in the comments section about this being a bastardisation of the original dance, but i really don't see the problem. These guys are just having a good time. Who cares if it's not exactly according to the way it was originally intended. Things change, deal with it.
+barely a pun Haters gonna hate. My kids are now into dance after watching these videos. A great quote from Gregory Hines: "How did all the greats learn their moves? We steal them...change them up and make it ours..."
I never get tired of watching these Charleston competitions. You can't watch these people dance without smiling!
This video makes my day every time I watch it. It's wonderful this dance is still alive and well. May those dancers have a long and wonderful career!
That was one of the most entertaining solo Charleston comps I've seen! Love it!
you can not have more fun than this with your clothes on! Then again I think some of these dancers will disagree!! Thanks for posting this!!
The best Charleston dancers I've ever witnessed! Fabulous performances ya'll!
I had no idea this even existed. This is completely awesome.
This is one kick-ass video, folks! Everybody that was in this video rocked with their dancing! =D
i like how much fun they are having and how they just support eachother and stuff
I had a permanent smile the whole time! They got the crazy legs syndrome and I love it!
that realy looks like a lot of fun the Charleston is a masterpiece and never grows old i love it
@REDSKINS8923 The name of the song is "That's a plenty", created in 1914. I love it.
I was just gonna start learning break dance. Screw that now. This is way way more epic.
The first song was called That's A Plenty.
Stunning performance!
koto Visitors
the all skate at the end is the best. they look like they are having so much fun.
what a awesome happy dance, cool
That was sooooo freaking entertaining and aweeeesoooomeee
hahaah that's just wonderful. you just don't see that kind of joy and energy anywhere else
Admit it, you got the urge to dance while watching this! and on of your legs was following the rythm ;)
WWOOAAAAHH EVERYONE ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!!
Soy el único que cree que el charleston debería volver?
Live recording that can be found on this compilation : Live at the Beverly Cavern - The 1949 Radio Transcription Series. Can be listened to on Deezer (legal stream music platform).
May you have good luck with the Charleston, my friend! =D
hahahaha i can't stop laughing. This guy in the back keeps laughin the same way as if it was on playback 3-4 times then screams once. Then proceeds to laugh again, screams, laughs, screams and so on.
@REDSKINS8923: The first song is titled 'That's A-Plenty'.
Basic 1920s Charleston is just:
Tap step, step, tap step, step.
Rather easy really. It's just styling and which other solo jazz moves you throw into it which make it grand.
Cause you can see the dancers are loving every second of it :P
OMG ! It's awesome! Happiest dance ever !
I feel happy after watching this video. =D
They look like they're having so much fun! Gosh, I want to do this!
Super entertaining! Love Sharon Davis !
So much fun!!
=O pinez respect c'est TROP beau !
I went boxing as lad. Join the British army when i had the chance. But my god i wish i could move like this and them.
Increible como se puede bailar asi realmente genial!!
Think I found it : Kid Ory & His creole Jazz Band. Awesome track !
I love Dance from Heart)
Thank you.
I love them all!!!
awesome!
How do you choose they are all AMAZING
Hurley you're still my hero!!!
@elizabethvictoriabor There's always a whooper. Cameras should come with a whoop filter.
But nonetheless that was great. It's Kevin St Laurent for me.
That looks like so much fun!!
Wonderful!
@REDSKINS8923 "That's a plenty". Not sure who's performing this version though, it could be Sidney Bechet
It doesn't matter what race you are to be a "better" dancer, or dance better, and no not all black people are "normally" the ones that dance better but still, they all were good. I'm black myself but honestly think everyone is good.
Came to this after watching a competition with a modern style of dancing. Every one was so aggressive and poorly mannered, like the two were just trying to make each other angry,
I much prefer this. Everyone's happy and impressed with each other rather than trying to show each other up; they just love dancing.
The first song is That's A-Plenty, I don't know the arrangement of it though
i love this!!!!!!!
Good jams!!
fantastic!!!
Seriously I've been trying to learn a bit of basic Charleston for ages, but it's just impossible! I can't see how EVERYONE in the 20's could dance like this!
And you probably won't unless you buy the four disc Kid Ory & His Creole Jazz Band - Live at the Beverly Cavern 1949 Radio Transcription. There's actually two recordings of "That's A Plenty" on that collection, and both of which I'd imagine would be darned difficult to find anywhere else. I bought it a while back, and I most certainly recommend it for similar style music.
This is so amazing!! :D
Великолепно!!!! молодцы ребята) Им туда бы еще Ксению Пархатскую!
PArecen de Plástico!!! Los amooo ;D
either i'm missing something or this is the coolest thing ever
@FOTONOVELLA1978 Me too. The redhead was my favorite...
Love the guy with a beard!!
Boy am I happy!
Kevin is my favourite, cant believe he didnt make the top 3
that's great! I'll use that motion in my dance! like
Thanks lots. :D
Anybody knows the titles of these songs? The artist is Fletcher Henderson, but i dont find it anywhere.
Do you have a swing club in your area? If so, they usually give lessons and they might be able to teach you some of this stuff.
Otherwise, just try imitating videos like this - a lot of those moves are easier than they look! And since my local swing club tends to focus on lindy hop and blues dance, I learn a lot of my charleston moves from RUclips videos like this, and there are some videos out there too that actually walk you through some steps. Good luck, and have fun!
cooooll!!
fantastic fun! could stop at 5:34.
10/10 would bang #107
if you like this watch the video for James Welsh 'Air Valley'.
You know what's missing from this...
Truckin'
Where'd you find that? I had a quick search and couldn't really find much on that particular recording.
DOPE!!!!!
the beginning of shuffle !!!!!!!!
@shaka066 No not shuffling. Charleston is most certainly NOT shuffling. O____O
Bugger street dancing, I want to learn me some of this!
I couldn't find a perfect version though.
the guy with the golden shirt looks like ted mosby!
The only thing missing is the live band.
thats really Plenty...
-_- .... BANDS WILL MAKE HER DANCE!
I like the red head . . .
Indeed. This is where my nitpicking comes into it, as their comment was just a little too ambiguous for my tastes.
i can't believe hurley didn't win. hurley is amazing!!
Perhaps. I'm probably just being a little overly nitpicky, but I don't think one should be throwing credit at Daft Punk for the Solo Charleston Finals at ILHC.
That guy who looks like Jim Kramer (Mad Money) has legs made out of rubber. Abe Lincoln was pretty good too!
hellyeah!
thank you daft punk
is the second girl Mary Jane from the big 3 podcast?
And to think, they danced like this WITHOUT alcohol.
Здорово!Супер!
Is that Evita in that competition?
indeed
the Gams on that first Dame were the bees knees
long lived the moonshiners era
5:00 looks so much fun
ohhhhhh my gosh! i want to do what everyone is doing!:D
who's the guy that went after Kevin and before nathan?
