The audio quality here can do nothing to diminish Manuel Barrueco's amazing gifts. Beautiful rubato, fantastic technique and another wonderful glimpse into Manuel's dedication and supreme reverence to J. S. Bach and the majestic instrument he holds.
macleod41069 no offence but I disagree, the JW version is superior to this in at least 3 key musical points: 1 interpretation (name one interpretation technique he employs in this video) 2 tempo vs harmonic sentiment - this is too quick (fantastic technically but lacking understanding of the gravity in which Bach likely wrote this work). 3 performance skill (he looks like he is asleep; how are we supposed to connect to the death of Bach's first wife when a robot plays the music?) Don't get me wrong he is technically amazing but I believe you've been dazzled.
That line at like 410 is the best interpretation of this part I've ever heard and I'm an unapologetic segovia admirer. I'm going to have to adapt that fingering and phrasing to my chaconne its just so amazing. So much better than the somewhat screeching high runs in the segovia arrangement. Incredible :)
To me, even though played extremely well here by Manuel, I found this climactic passage of this performance you are referring to to be a disappointment played down an octave. In fact, this particular passage in most performances is disappointing to me...even with violinists. To me Segovia nailed it! I love the way Segovia emphasizes that climactic high note, almost as if it is a downbeat (which it actually is not), emphasizing that this is the true climax of the Chaconne. Most players just pass through that climactic high note as if it's just another note. Plus, it is interesting to note that in later recordings maestro Barrueco plays this passage up an octave. While I do find the lower octave arrangement interesting, I think ultimately it should be plaved Up! You mention Screeching high notes...Screeching? Really?
Que belleza de obra en manos de un experto de la guitarra clasica. En Cosmosofia se dece" EL VERBO ES EL SONIDO", y esta interpretacion ayuda a comprender ese aforismo. Bravo Maestro!!
I remember my 1st Master Class with Manuel. 1976 I was learning an Allemande from 2nd Lute Suite. Bach is very difficult to perform. This Chaconne is great however; I will say that Segovia paved the way for New Repertoire with his transcriptions of JS BACH. I think Manuels performance is technically perfect. I wish that I could find the JOSE' TOMAS bach transcriptions I lost mine during a move.
An elegant guitar player with a very robust tone well balanced and full of body. An excellent ambassador for the classical guitar. Shame about the acoustics.
La interpretación de M. Barrueco para esta pieza de Bach es muy buena. Los equipos técnicos de sonido le fueron desfavorables, pues hay ruidos de arrastre que molestan y hacen perder la calidad de la grabación.
FatCatGames Not uncommon; I'm twice removed from Barrueco by two (two!) of my teacher's teachers. I was lucky enough to inherit Barrueco's right hand figure on Villa Lobos' etude 1. A great pedagogue and a great performer
Technique 9.7/10 Performance 2/10 Musicianship 7/10 Interpretation 4.5/10 Sense of majesty around the greatest work ever written 3/10 Shoe size / probably 11's UK. I like some of Bach I have on a CD but this was treated just a quick and lifeless scale run. BTW what's the best version you've heard? Guitar violin or symphonic or big band no matter which.
Brian Cullen On guitar, Segovia ;) Jokes aside, probably Russell, as is the case with almost all things Baroque. He is the greatest transcriber alive . On violin, Julia Fischer, although I have a lot of affection for Hahn's performance. I'm always surprised by how good her Bach is.
GhostBrah Russel is a very good choice. I quite like the John Feeley version, you can see it in HD on YT "Chaconne in d minor by J.S.Bach (Arr. John Feeley) "
Bryan Vázquez Films critics don't make movies, therefore they shouldn't be allowed to do their jobs. Nor should food critics or literary critics because they aren't chefs or writers.

Wow. Just wow. One of the great masters of guitar and to have this performed flawlessly live on television says so much.
He's always been one of my favorites. I'm glad I found this video of Manuel playing Bach's Chaconne. Just amazing.
its really cool that this performance hasn't been lost :D cheers for sharin'
I guess that's the best I ever heard/seen that played live on guitar (despite poor audio quality). Thank you for posting!
Have look at John Williams, equally as good.

@@soundknight 3rd point is pointless. How he looks is completely irrelevant, he's absolutely focused!

What a memory! Currently working on the Sarabande - Double of the same suite for my sophomore year in university.!
There is no allemende in the 2nd lute suite, are you thinking of the 3rd one?
one of the greatest few high- level players. Super grandmaster as of chess
Such a beautiful sounding guitar!
Amazing!. What mastery.
Simply one of the greatest!
What a wonderful performance !
Great, maestro!
Me saco El sombrero . fantastico!!
This is why Segovia was Segovia.

Thanks! I vaguely remember he also played Henze in this TV recital, and it captivated me. Do you happen to have that for upload, too?
lol was good this was my guitar teachers teacher lol

Bob Ross is my fav guitarist!
Great!
No music...no life... like a robot...
Friend, quit tearing yourself down like that! There's still hope for you!
Amazing playing and technic but there is no Bach araund.
A good version on guitar is Christopher Parkening.
such a tedious piece but he makes it sound almost listenable.Lets have some good old fashioned spanish guitar like the greatest Vicente Gomez.
Bach "flamencanized".
Guitar "Bachnifized"

GhostBrah Well said. Too bad I play guitar so I can't be a critic.
You can't even play this song as good as him or better than him.
Great performance which suffers from being performed on a Spanish Instrument, poor sustain and limited polyphony which Bach requires
