I spent many hours listening to all the recordings of Christopher Parkening in the mid 1970's as a teenager, and I fell in love with the Classical Guitar, I am a Self-Taught, collecting sheetmusic as a teenager. Classical Guitar is a passionate hobby - studying Sor, Carcassi, Guliani as well as collecting 33 LP vinyl recordings at the time of Andres Segovia, Alirio Diaz, Julian Bream, John Williams, Jose Maria Rey de La Torre, Alexandre Lagoya/Ida Presti. Thanks for posting.
I remember seeing the first recital in this video (where Parkening is wearing a turtleneck shirt) on TV when I was 18 yrs old. It changed my whole mind and spirit about playing guitar. I sold all my electric guitars and amps, bought a Classical guitar, started taking Classical lessons and never looked back. Thank You for posting this video. It is still inspiring to watch after all these years.
Only Ida Presti, Parkening and Segovia could play that Courante. Quite a treat not only to hear him but also to see him when he was in his prime. Thanks!!!
All these pieces played by Parkening sounds very familiar to me via his old recordings. Especially I like his colorful mellow tones and natural interpretation. What a shame that he retired so early ! Segovia kept playing in his concerts just before his death. John Williams also retired and Bream passed away. Who might be substantial leaders in the field of classical guitar ? David Russell must be one of them. Who else?
Regarding the other guitar masters ... they SFCG (which I was a member) used my camera. And I burned several of the performances to DVD. And I discovered these DVDs in my storage a few weeks ago.
For this performance look for a Hal Leonard DVD titled: Video Collection, Christopher Parkening Virtuoso Performances. It's a documentary covering Parkening's accomplishments. It has several live performances and recitals. It features Segovia playing a few pieces too. The clips I've posted are about half of the music on the DVD.

Sick of Parkening, sick of Segovia. Third rate musicians.
