Kevin, this is to all resellers: don't let anyone tell you 50K is not possible part time at 20 hrs. a week. I have been doing it for 25 years! I have no RUclips or social media presence (not even Fakebook). My incomes have ranged as high as 100K and as low as 25K . I started it with a $20 investment on a whim when the plant I was working at cut our overtime and degraded our pay grades. The key is to use eBay like a bank. Make the money when you need it. Don't burn yourself out by listing like a robot. Push yourself into the higher end market with your knowledge, as you go along and lastly, DON'T be afraid to make mistakes. Anybody can do this! PS You are one of the few RUclipsrs I watch nowadays, keep on keeping it real!

My go 2 tape. I spent Mondays 4-6 hours at thrift stores. Friday's 4-6 hours at garage sales. Tuesday- Thursday 4-6 hours listing and shipping. About 75k last year.

Hello Kevin, I think that it’s doable for many but not for all because some are slower at listing and picking and packing ect. With experience it all gets easier and faster. Where I might have to look sometimes up to know the value, you may have sold it 10 times in the past. I know that I can’t do it yet, but I am getting faster at all of it especially the packaging and shipping. 😀 But I have only been doing this for 11 months.

You can absolutely make 50K a year working less then 20 hours a week. Starting from scratch it would be hard but once you have a good size store, you keep your ASP high and you know how to source. I have done it and will most likely hit that again this year. I have a fulltime job and three kids with all sorts of school activities, and I have to get family time in there. I do a a few hours on Saturday, I might hit an estate sale on my lunch hour once or twice a week and one night a week I stop at a thrift store on my way home from work. I list and pack at night after the kids go to bed while I watch TV. I would be surprised if I even hit 20 hours a week. My secret is working my sourcing into my life. This weekend I was running from one obligation to another and passed a garage sale. I stopped in at 11am and asked for what I usually look for then picked up a concert shirt for $20 that will sell for at least $125-150. That stop took me less then 5 minutes.

The wife and I will make 30-40k this year without even trying. You’re exactly right about the way you source. I used to go out almost everyday and buy almost everything that made a bit of money. Now I only buy higher price items. So more money for less time invested.

Well said! I think this is more or less the natural progression of a lot of resellers. Maybe start with a few items around the house, then when you "catch the bug" you source anything and everything. Then you take note of what does and doesn't sell, how long it takes to sell, and how much effort goes into cleaning, shipping, and sometimes repairing an item. After a few less than stellar experiences with certain items and over the moon, great experiences with others, resellers hone in on the best "bang for the buck" sourcing wise.

In 2021, my last year as a part time reseller I netted $50,659.52 / $4796.67 out of my booth and netted $45,863.15 on EBAY( that I saved as a cushion for when I retired in 2022). It is very doable, organization and having a routine are some of the skills that are needed.

You make a very good argument for your personal 20hrs and 50k profits.
I'm confused because it seems that your family members spend time every week with your reselling business. If their time and effort contribute to your sales, wouldn't the hours per week far exceed 20 hours?
Your family's involvement enables you to achieve 50k with only 20 hours per week of your time.

I have a full time Accounting Manager job and do ebay on the side at about 20 hours a week and had about 200k in sales last year. Roughly half sports cards at 20% margin and yard sale/thrift items at more than 50% margins. I might average a little more than 20 hours per week but definitely not full-time.

I love when people with no experience on the subject give their expert opinions. Pure comedy gold. 15 years ago, I had a seasonal Halloween store on ebay. I made $35,000 net in the months of Sept and Oct selling costumes/accessories for Halloween. I worked less than 20 hours a week during that time period. Now, I went to trade shows a couple of times during the year to source items, but this was my fun on-the-side job, I still had my full time job. It's 100% doable if you have the drive and do your homework. It's not for everyone, but it's definitely possible to make good money on ebay part time. Just my two cents...from someone who actually has experience in the subject ;)

I've been reselling part time for 25 years because it's fun and I've made more than the aforementioned amount on less than 20 hours a week. You may not be as efficient or productive and it's great if you want to share your story. But implying that your experience is the only possible outcome and that there's no way someone else could accomplish what you obviously could not, is quite a narcissistic. I think it's definitely doable, but it takes time to get there. I estimate that if I have 700 listings, I'll make $20k. That is with the type of stuff I pick and list. As I get better at picking, the number of listings needed will go down. I started in December and I'm having a lot of fun building this business. Not making much this first year though - maybe $7k before shipping supplies and mileage.

I sell everything ( mainly electronics but I sell everything ). Taking cost if goods, Ebay fees and taxes I can tell between $50 and $60k are profit.

The old saying is you make your money when you buy. I haven't personally made that much profit for several years now because I had to dedicate myself to moving is from California to my Kansas hometown a couple years ago, and now I make more money for my dad selling his collectibles than I make for my own bank account, and I have too many competing demands on my time.
But! I think a naysayer like that is just someone who's bitter that they have not been able to turn a good profit. I'd love to look at what things THEY sell and their feedbacks.
Dude! I once found a 1951 Coleman gasoline lantern new in its original box, never assembled, for $20 at a Goodwill in Southern California. It was engraved Sacramento OCD (Office of Civil Defense). Two bidders ran it up to $488. One asked me about pits or cracks in the finish, and he knew exactly where to look, because I had not seen them. Ya don't find those every day though!

I focus mainly on one particular niche - high end watches but I make $25-40k per month on eBay working well under 20hrs a week. Knowledge is power in reselling - know more than other buyers and sellers and you’ll have the edge you need.
My 11 year old makes $20-30k during yard sale season buying and selling the stuff he loves and understands. He does have cheap labor with me though 😂

I have been a full-time reseller for 28 years. However, when my best friend had cancer, I went and stayed with her and took care of her for a year until she passed away. I was barely able to work 10 hours a week and I was selling $49,000 every 90 days. That was freaking more than I usually made full time LOL. So yes, it can be done and yes, it is all about the sourcing.

I'd say possible, but not for everyone. If you don't have major physical disabilities and limited sourcing. Tag sales where I live only really are useful for sourcing maybe three months/year. Or used to be - I had maybe four good weekends between May and September. Covid killed off the best charity thrifts and rummage sales in my area, never to return. Private picks are required if you want to make a decent living here. With good sources of decent-value items with a good sell-through, you can do it. As long as eBay doesn't throttle you or start taking things down thanks to the hidden VERO list. Etsy does similar things, and we won't even discuss Amazon. I think I maxed out at about $20,000 in my best year.

    • @OriginalNethead
      @OriginalNethead 11 месяцев назад

Another thing to note: it takes close to $60,000 net per person in my area just to live here and pay your bills. One big reason why most semi-pro resellers live elsewhere.

I've done over that with 10-20 hours a week, largely because I bulk source and do quantity listings so I list once, sell over and over. Most of my time is in shipping. I will fall short of it this year (barring a GREAT Q4), but I moved cross country and was off line for most of the first quarter I had a kid and reduced my hours to 5-10. Next year, I expect to be well above that with a full year to sell and more time to put into it again.

Some weeks I list very little but can drive around buying collections, and grouped together I’ve spent 20 hrs in a week just on sourcing and picking and packing orders. Not even any listing.

Just like you said...I run two businesses, one of which is my eBay business. I'd say it is about 20 hours a week. Sometimes more in the winter since it's more difficult to source, but that's a good average. You aren't a liar, or I'm one too! $50K net is definitely doable if you are all of the things you stated...consistent being the most important. The hours may be slightly deceiving, though, because it is a LOT of work. Rewarding, yes, and if you like the work it's a great way to make money. However, make no mistake, it is hard work.

I've been reselling for about 2 years now. I could easily see someone building up to 20 hrs a week for 50k net sales. I'm not doing that but I am not 100% committed to it (I work a full time "normal" job too"). The only caveat that I would add to it is that there is some start-up time and money to get to the point where you START to make that much. If I added up all the time and money spent to get to this point I would have made more if I would have picked up a part time job for 2 years BUT I would have HATED my life for the last two years working for somebody else at 60 hours a week to make them more money that I got. I loved doing this for the last couple of years and all the money I made was for ME.
I would suggest to people to start VERY slow. Get a very small store going that doesnt make much just to see what life will look like for you if you decide to commit to it. I think it is worth it but I like the reseller life.
    Just my humble opinions. Godspeed.

July through Sept was awesome! Oct was slower :(
If I always had July-Sept I'd have over 40K and I don't know how much I work. I'd like to work a little less but I don't actually track. And I'm not quite 18 months back into this. My only purposefully under $10 are Disney stickers. My Avg. sales price per item for the year is $40. Best ROI so far this year are books.
I put some purses in the flat rate padded just bubble wrap more of those little extra pieces so they don't rub the bag or each other.

I can't speak for everyone but this is my 2nd year reselling. Last year I didn't do a good job tracking. I would say I spend 10 hours or less a week sourcing, packing, etc. After taking out all expenses up to this point I have a net profit of over $10k. There is way more that goes into this than people think (including myself) but I absolutely love it. I think I'll be at around $15k profit for the year. Just think if I could devote more time to this. I think the $50k mark is attainable, but as you mentioned it's a lot of work.

You have to NET $961 per week. That’s after C.O.G , shipping supplies, shipping cost, gas, EBay fees, cleaning supplies, and whatever else I forgot….doable. It’s the 20 hours per week I’m questioning. You really need to source higher dollar items quickly and cheap.( but that’s what you said) It’s not like you can’t do it. Very good question.

3-4 hours a week sourcing (and that’s fun imo)
    30-60 minutes 5 times a week packing (we’ll say 4 hours)
    4-5 hours a week listing
So 14 hours a week and we’re making $35k year net

I work well over 40 hours a week at reselling but this is my first year and I’m trying to build my business and there are MANY kinks to work out. I don’t think I’m currently on point to net 50K this year but we will see. There are many learning curves in this business but my goal is to net 75K in 2024.

I source on Monday’s ($1.00 day at thrift store) for maybe an hour. Then I buy at regular stores for sale items an hour or 2 a couple of time a month. My business has just started making money, within the past 2 months. I don’t like garage sales. I make about $1500.00 a month. Only 2 years to get to this point. Someday I’ll make more but I work alone and don’t have help. On average I have 4 sales a day, everyday. I’m comfortable. IF I sold $50,000 a month I’d probably go crazy. 😂 It takes time and patience. Enjoy the ride.

It's probably a gut response from someone who doesn't understand value beyond their own thought process. Too many people only value what they value. So anyone making money from things they don't value is impossible in their mind.

I do part time and i dont make 50K net profit, but it is possible. it just takes a lot of work. I dont know if its 20 hours a week. but close to it. it all depends how you source. it all comes down to your sourcing. But it is possible. i dont have you tube or anything. but as long as you have a garage and good sourcing, after a year its completely possible. That said, i dont think EVERYONE can do it, we all have different skill and abilities and desires, that plays a big part and its ok if you dont. we dont all have to be re-sellers.

I used to spend about 5-12 hours a week sourcing, now I find my self spending 20+ a week and not getting enough good quality stuff. Not for all you guys helping with tips n such I’m still at it making a decent profit. My go 2 tape!

I know I can definitely make more than I am. But between my situation and disabilities, I have gotten in my own way. I just need to rethink how I am going some parts of the process. Due to the situation and a lot of good friends, I have a lot high and mid end stuff. But, I can't navigate the place. I didn't want to, but I am looking for help here in Louisville to get my stuff moved into a storage unit so I can organize and set up dedicated areas for photos, packing and everything. I'll never be successful by moving 60 to 70 lb totes to get things shipped every day with collapsed disks and bad knees.

You absolutely can make 50k and more I do and I don’t have social media. This year I will make less than usual I will make a little over 50k but I’ve been on Maui since June 21st helping my daughter out with my new grandson. My sister ships my items from New York when ever I make a sale I also source once a week here on Maui and post once a week. It’s absolutely possible. I also went to Japan for 2 weeks with my older grandson and I paid for it. I’m a younger grandma I was in my mid 40s when my first grandson was born🥰

This is all great if someone only needs part time income. Hard to live on $50,000 these days. So, if someone else makes money in the house, that is good. Otherwise, have to work many more hours to make more $ to live these days with rent, insurance, food, car payment, medical needs and these are just the basics of needs. And, this doesn’t include any “wants”, like a movie or snacks… let alone a vacation!!

the biggest hurdle I find for most resellers who believe you can't do this full time, is lack of knowledge. They go after video games, pokemon, mtg, and that's about it. Their focus is primarily on the low hanging fruit, which usually gets gobbled up the first hour of the day. The real money is in everything else they leave behind. I thank them for that.

  • @richardslade9307
    @richardslade9307 11 месяцев назад

I’d say absolutely possible but improbable for most.. especially in your first few years doing it.
You will need to gain both knowledge, sources, and capital to achieve numbers like that.. someone who is starting this business with $1,000 in capital is not going to be netting 50k profit anytime soon. If you need to sell items to be able to buy new items you are not at the scale to hit those numbers.
Once you find inventory sources that can be repeatedly sourced from for profit it gets a lot easier.. it’s a lot of work to find those.

I’m only a part timer and spend maybe 2-3 hours a week buying and 3 hours a week listing, and my 90 day average is around $6000 on eBay alone. So if I spent more time with my eBay store, I could easily see making 50K a year @ 20 hours a week. Haters are always going to hate and the envious ones will always give negative comments.

I live in the middle of nowhere so no a lot of options for sourcing but I do garage sales and when garage sales are over. I’ll go to the bins once a week which is 3 hours away. It is VERY possible

I think 50K is possible, I average 3k a month with an average of 250 active listings. I source bin stores about 4-5 hours a week and another 5-6 hours listing, shipping etc. This is all on top of my normal 9-5 job. I know it wouldn’t be hard to double or triple those numbers with more effort.

I know I could make far more than $50,000 net in a year, but I do everything entirely by myself. I am also retired and have to stay under the amount the feds say I can earn. Can you believe that. If I make over about $20,000 net they start taking away my Social Security. At that point I would be making very little money. For every two dollars I net over that amount the feds take away one dollar from my Social Security. It isn't worth working at that point. The retired folks on Social Security are the only people that the feds actually limit earning potential.
