Thanks for the vlog on Chippers. I struggled quite a bit chipping until I bought the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 Black Satin Chipper. It has helped immensely.
I've been using the Ping ChipR since it was released and it's helped my game massively. I've taken it out of the bag now and started using my 9 iron and pitching wedge and just carried over the same stroke I would use with my chipper. My Ping ChipR was a great training aid, for how to chip.
I have the Cleveland chipper and I absolutely love it. I hit it from 100 yards and in. It may be my favorite club I have ever owned. I love the shorter shaft, upright lie angle and heavy head. Mark, you are sponsored by them. Tell them to produce an entire set of chippers from 26 degrees to 42 degrees and I will buy the whole set!!!
I bought the square strike 45 degree and its the best club in my bag. I was so impressed, i also got the 55 degree for situations where i dont have much green to work with. Hit the ball with a steep angle of attack and have gone from the world's worst short game to deadly accurate. Square strike says its good from 40 yards but I have found for me that 25 yards is the limit. Past that, I use a 52 degree wedge. However, I still cant say enough about square strike.
I carry a Cleveland Launcher HB 9-iron as a chipper. I played a full set of these for about 6 months as an experiment. I sold the set and then purchased a single 9-iron. I figure it saves me 2 - 5 shots per round. The loft is 39 degrees (Ping is 38 and Odyssey is 37). The sole is rounded so you get the good, forgiving turf interaction no matter how tight the lie is. I can use it more vertical / toe-down for shots out of deeper rough. Its my go-to club for 20 - 100 yard shots where I want to land on the apron and release onto the green. More, I can use it for longer carry bunker shots -- either cross bunkers short of the green or longer green-side bunker shots. While it doesn't match the rest of my irons (Mizuno JPX 921 HM), its just another golf club with some pretty special capabilities. Used price is between $50 and $100. I could probably just swap out my regular Mizuno 9-iron and be fine. It might gap a bit off, but I could likely adjust to it pretty easily. As it it, it's just one of 14, and I am happy to make room for it in my bag for all the things it does well.
After an awful bout of shanks I watched numerous RUclips videos without any success. So I sold my vokey wedges and bought a cleveland chipper and chipper and a couple of cleveland smart sole wedges. The chipper is a god send and totally changed my confidence and enjoyment of this wonderful game.
Have not played golf seriously for 8 years so looking at chipper to get back into the game. I used to come home from work and hit 60 balls every evening with a 7 and 9 iron. I won a stableford comp 1 year by shooting 40 points with 2 blobs .... must have chipped 3 in during the round. Now I need all the help I can get. Another great vid ... love how Coach is on the chipper trail to keep up with Crossy !!!! Lmao
I bought a Tour Edge Hot Launch Chipper. I'm happy with the purchase. $70 US. They are made two hours from my house. I received it in two days. It has the same loft as my 8 iron.
PING CHIPR review Second year golfing, made my 10 first birdies this year, I think 5 of them were with the chipr! Used as a putter from the rough around the green, made some loooooong ones with it by trusting the spot I wanted it to land and the line was spot on after. Love it!
Love this review I currently use a odyssey but have a ping on order to blend with my ping irons , but i did start off using a Wilson which worked really well. Keep these reviews coming
I use the Ping ChipR a lot on the course. I live in a mountainous region and the club really comes in handy on hilly terrain when the ball is above your feet
I shunned the notion of a chipper for the 30-plus years I've played this game. But I bought my wife one, so I decided to buy the Ping. I do like it. It's not as flexible as using higher-lofted wedges, but it keeps things really close a lot. I really do enjoy hitting it, especially on long chips. But the dilemma is: which club do I pull? My initial urge is to drop the LW, but I have a set of single-length irons (Wishon EQ1-NX), so my SW is really long and not so great from the sand, so I tend to go with the LW there. But I hit a lot more chips than I do sand shots. The Ping SHOULD be upright because a chipper should mimic a putting stroke. The Ping's loft is comparable to a 9-iron, so I know to use a 3:1 ratio--1 yard of carry for every 3 yards of run. That means that a 25-pace chip would require 6-pace carry. This is adjusted for the speed of the green slope, etc. The grooves aren't important. They cannot add spin to chips--the swing speed is too low. The other use of grooves is to wick water away from the club face. But the same dynamic applies: the slow swing won't wick much moisture anyway. The Ping is a 9-iron with a putter's lie angle. That is what makes it distinct from either a 9-iron or a putter. Oh, and the swing weight is in the E-3 range--quite heavy compared to typical irons. That is an added plus.
I did get the Cleveland chipper after seeing a video last spring that Mark made and it’s quite a clever club but practice is required, at least for me 👍
I play the original Ping Chipo. I build my set around it. It is like magic. I use it as a trouble club, bump and run, and long chips. It always go where it is told, and feels like butter.
I use a Cleveland Niblick. From maybe 2011, I bought it used as a joke for $20. It's great! Looks (and I imagine performs) just like the Cleveland Smart Sole.
I bought a Wilson Pro staff like that one when I first started playing golf just over 5 years ago, it helps beginners so much and to be fair, I have toyed with getting another chipper for winter use. Would be the ping for me
I used to play the Wilson chipper and loved it. I suffered badly with the shanks so used to use the chipper for approach shots. I could reach the green from 150 yards out and it went dead straight. Unfortunately the club isn’t built for full shots and after one to many full swings the head flew down the fairway (very upsetting at the time 😂) I’ve got the Cleveland chipper now and although it performs well around the green I don’t find it as easy to hit from further away. Thankfully my shanks have gone now and I can use any club to chip with but the Cleveland stayed in the bag for now.
I can chip traditionally, but I’ve also taught myself how to grip my wedges like a putter and hold them more upright. Finally, I love chipping and hitting punch shots up to 170 yards with my hybrids.
Broke down (in part from your comments to lose the ego and just play better) and got a.Chipper - absolutely live the Cleveland Smart Sole. No problems hitting frome 40 and in with it.
Interesting review. What do you think of chipping with the Cleveland Launcher XL Halos? Does the wide sole of these hybrid irons offer the same benefits of the chipper?
I’m not a horrendous chipper bit bought the Crossy Cleveland after seeing how well you used it! 2 winter rounds and can’t hit the thing! Would be great to do a vid on how to use in different circumstances 😊
Struggling to find the Cleveland… wish there was more stock. Borrowed a friends PingR and really enjoyed it but found in the 3 rounds I had with it, I had limited opportunities to use it. My club has very small greens, tight fronts so if you’re a bit left or right, there’s a bunker in play. That said, I want one for the winter where small pitch shots or chips in a very muddy course means for me at least, an almost perfect strike with a wedge. Chipper would make winter golf a bit more fun 👍🏻
I was really interested to watch this video, as I’m planning to do my own version on my much (much!) smaller golf channel. I’ve recently bought the Ping ChipR to review, and want to provide a helpful comparison for average golfers like myself. I’m usually a fan of Mark’s approach and honesty, but this video frustrated me. For a video titled ‘Top 5 chippers - BEST CHIPPERS in GOLF’, what we actually get is a light touch comparison with no real justification of why these 4 chippers are the best in golf…I appreciate so much of golf is the player and not the club and so no club comparison can be totally objective…but you clearly say the Wilson is a bad club. Given your audience, reach and resources I was hoping for a far more helpful video which was promised by the thumbnail and title. Perhaps I’m just being overly sensitive in my sleep deprived state (my newborn is 13 days old!), and if you do see this Mark, feel free reach out, or ignore it 🙂. Appreciate my audience is tiny compared to yours, but I thought you might find the feedback helpful, and I wanted to share as I’ve watched your content for years and it has been a big influence. Kevin
I use my smart sole chipper for any decent lies inside 100 yards. I would say I stick greens 8/10 times with it. I may even be buried with it. It’s my favourite club as a high handicapper
I only started playing this year and using my wedges gave me the fear. I bought the mazel chipper it gave me great confidence to go on and use my wedges.
I have the previous model Wilson chipper. It has it uses when I play sand scrape green courses. i think it has about 36 degree loft. I do struggle with length of run out with it and might prefer a 45 / PW loft club.
Interesting video Mark. I went back to using a chipper for confidence. I have the Odessey and use it very much as a putter with decent results, I also use it up to 40/50 yards. I wasn't aware of the Cleveland, but wanted to try the Ping. So pleased you have them in the same group. I will see if I can find the others to try them against my own. Thankyou for the video.
I’ve got the Cleveland smart sole 3 chipper with midsize putter grip, unfortunately only played 4 and half rounds because of injury to my left arm, but it’s a great club even out of a bunker.
A guy I play with uses the Odyssey. He is deadly with it from 50 yards in. In 1 out of 20 and tap in with the chipper 17 out of 20. Round a couple of weeks ago he took his putter out 3 times in the round. Guys give him the gears for it but man he gets results.
Used my ChipR for the first time last weekend. Great results including two tap in putts from off green 20+yd chips. I got it fitted at AG with extra grip size. It would be interesting to see what the cheap Wilson would be like with a grip upgrade (probably a CPX Jumbo grip for me) ie better value for money with a better grip than the main brand ones?
I like the look of the Odyssey one the best. It looks exactly like one of their putters, which, to me, would promote a very putter-like stroke. I think the putter stroke is an easy stroke for the average weekend duffer to emulate. The one thing I don't like about it is that the bottom leading edge looks a bit sharp which could result in it digging into the turf if you hit it just a tad fat.
I have a very old chipper, unbranded, and I like it a lot. It has horizontal grooves and can even spin the ball a little. I use it 50 yards and in. But I struggle to get it any farther than that consistently. Would you recommend upgrading to the odyssey? Would it potentially spin more than an old unbranded one considering the odyssey face? Would the odyssey insert allow it to be hotter, maybe making it easier to go longer with it, potentially? Would a new Amazon chipper from say, Mazel, perform just as well for less money? Unfortunately there is no opportunity to try them. So I'm trying to have some info before I spend over $100 Thanks!
I’ve just taken delivery today of the Cleveland C wedge and if it ever stops raining I’ll be straight down to the short game area at my club to try it out! Is there any chance of producing an instruction video on how to use these chippers to their full potential (ball position, grip, stance etc)? Is it just a putter motion for every shot or can I also use a wedge swing for certain shots?
I am between the cleveland and the ping, any suggestion? And in case of be the best option the Cleveland Golf Smart how many degrees should I buy? I saw in amazon they have 42 - 50 - 58
Great comparison video overall! Chippers come in such a wide array of styles and lofts that they kind of remind me of putters. Well... Yes they are meant to be used as a putter which is probably why they have putter-like designs. But I mean chances are there's one out there that will have a look you like. Though one hiccup is that you never mentioned the lofts. The Wilson Prostaff is 36 degrees according to the Amazon listing. No loft stamp on it though. Odyssey's X-Act should have a 37 stamped on it. There's no stamp on the Ping ChipR either, but the site lists it as 38.5 degrees. Finally, the Cleveland Smart Sole is a 42er according to the site, but it too has no stamp. ...Come to think of it, the loft isn't stamped on most chippers. Maybe more manufacturers should do that because people may have a preferred loft for a chipper. ----- A thing that seems common when people talk about chippers is that the higher lofted chippers seem to be more versatile. Square Strike, Top-Flite and Mazel make a 45er, then Mazel continues on up to a 55 and 60 so those are likely worth checking out too. But my guess is that they can be "too" high for some players as it may become intimidating like a lob wedge and could cut into the idea of using it for longer approaches. I also noticed that some prefer no grooves because it almost ensures that it runs rather than bites which they find more predictable. So Wilson's may be the killer club for some. Though I think those players are just using it around the green like you said.
It's Cleveland for me. in fact I think that doesn't blend with irons I think it blends with my CXB wedge which in turn blends to by RTX wedges. Dit I mention I also play a bronze Cleaveland mezzo putter and use AD333 balls in the winter and Q-Star in the summer? Did I also mention I play Wilson Staff C200 irons? on your recommendation I might add although they feel old now
I picked up all three of the Cleveland smart sole wedges after a video you and Matt did on them. Absolutely no regrets and thank you for that review and this comparison also!!❤
I have a Cleveland niblick kicking about somewhere and might put it back in the bag! Can't understand why these type of clubs get such a bad wrap when you have a whole plethora of game improvement versions of clubs that nobody seems to mind. Is it because the short game is where a golfers skill is most visible and no one likes to look like they're cheating a bit!!
I carry a 56 cleveland & 60 cleveland but my go to is the Odessy 37 chipper. I can take a putting stroke from as far a 50 yards and right up to the fringe of the green. Eliminates the chunks and low thin shots.
I actually own the wilson chipper! I only bought it because i had 12 clubs in the bag and wasn't prepared to spend over 50 for a half-decent one. only use it once in every 10 rounds-ish? lol
Just brought the Cleveland smart sole chipper..It's amazing .Glad I've got it in the bag. Great from tricky lays..Missed par 3 green .Chipper out to 3 foot ..walked off with a par👍
Mark, I game the odyssey and it angers me because it snags badly. I tested indoors and have played in the past with a modified 7i I built, so I was very disappointed when I got it out onto the course. The issue comes with the 5m from the green shots. They need to be delicate and have a sense of touch about them, and that's when the odyssey is snagging because there isn't much force in the shot.
I wondered too. Started using a Square Strike a few weeks ago and I am looking forward to giving it a serious chance to stay in in my bag. So far I'm really pleased with it.
Interesting that in a top 5 video you could only find 4 - is there not a Taylormade carbon twist face chipper you could have included? 😂 On a serious note, I was fitted for a TSr driver in September and casually asked if Titleist were likely to bring out a chipper - the fitter could barely carry on for laughing, so there is still a bit of snobbery with some manufacturers!
I wanted the cleveland to fit my bag but couldn't find one in stock anywhere. Bought the odysee but cant get used to it at all. It made me practice with other clubs more and now the chipper is in the garage.. Does anyone want a slightly used chipper???
I picked up a pinemeadow chipper for 39.99 usd to try one and I enjoy it. I love the look of the Cleveland but I couldn't justify the purchase without knowing if I would like it. Would definitely get the Cleveland if I can find on win the wild again.
So four not Five? I have a tour chipper that looks just like the Wilson except it has grooves and cost me $5 at Goodwill plus another 10 for a new grip.
Think you missed a very important point. Why are you using a chipper ? Generally because you can't chip with a normal club .... So it's then.... Ok well chip like you putt analogy ..... Which leads me to my point, the Odyssey as a putter chipper may well be the better one ? So maybe why they look different.... For different reasons, to help with certain issues .... . But good you recognised their great value to normal golfers 👍
Seems to me the Wilson came out the winner here. Arguably performed best in this demo and it comes at a fraction of the price of the others. If this is really about dropping the ego and playing what works, it's hard to justify spending $100-150 more based on looks.
Wilson has some serious history. Creation of the sand wedge via Gene Sarazen, more majors won with Wilson irons than any other brand. 62 in fact. Ogg- mented iron design that was the forerunner to cavity backs. No surprise they work and not a crap product. Sure they have cheaper lines but Wilson shouldn't be a punch line. Top of the line chipper? No. But it's 20 bucks and from my viewpoint of your chips, it hangs with the obnoxiously priced.. Some golf snobbery going on here for sure! That being said, I probably wouldn't use it. Lol
Ping chipper is the best but has no enough loft and being heavy hits very flat balls. It is the best from 30 + meters out. The next model should be with a loft of about 50 degrees. I can see that the "global warming" finally hit UK!
Cleveland and Ping are no doubt the lookers of the bunch. Clubs should look like clubs. Of course, it’s all about that personal comfort level. That Wilson looks like it got caught committing a crime. LOL. Is that even a chipper? No grooves and no shame… It’s like a date that’s actively trying to get you to hate them.
I have the Smart Sole 4 chipper in my bag and it's not going anywhere. Love it. No more thins and chunks chips & pitch

I love the ChipR Ping model looks. It does look spectacular for that type of club. I don't own one but I may get one just because it looks fun.

Realised that chippers are often 9 iron loft few months back . Since been doing lots of chips with 9 iron. Seems to be going well :)

I’ve only tried the Ping ChipR but love it. I carry three wedges I hardly use now. It saves me 5-6 strokes a round I reckon.
I have the Cleveland chipper and I keep it in the bag right next to my Ping putter. It blends in just fine.

Crossy Wedge ❤ I’m not hitting a lot of GIRs. This stick is gold for me!
Got a Crossey wedge in my bag and it's transformed my game 😁
I have been using a Dunlop I got 12 years ago for £4 and have put a jumbo max grip on it works every time
I have used a wilson prostate chipper for years now. My go to club from 100yds in.
ITS TIME FOR ANOTHER PRO SLAYING!!! Give Andy sully a call. Always best banter and great golf ⛳️ 👍 👌 👏 😎
I have two chippers in the bag a putter style for round the green and one more like an iron for out the rough and further out

Callaway should go with a MD chipper , wedge like and keep with the Odyssey as the putter style. For my money it’s Cleveland. Nice review.
Took the mick out of the Wilson every hit and then proceeded to hit it the closest. Gotta love golf.
Wilson. That’s my one. Clearly best if it goes in! Might have newer version as my grip feels very putter like.

what an ideal opportunity you had there to show how they play from 50 yards out and whether the wilsons lack of grooves actually made a difference 🙃
Grooves make a difference, there is no debate. 👍
@@MarkCrossfield i know that. but it would have been nice to see how they performed from distance. maybe next time.
@@thesugarlipslove the Wilson is comedy bad. Subject to strike conditions.
@@MarkCrossfield lol i dont doubt that for one second! does it have a handcrafted shaft though?
You have to do a full review with the Wilson Chippper.... PLEASE.... That would be fun.

Wish you’d picked up the Wilson Harmonized chipper bc it has grooves.
So I'm trying to have some info before I spend over $100
Thanks!
Great video - next time you do this test can you include a 9 iron?

A thing that seems common when people talk about chippers is that the higher lofted chippers seem to be more versatile.
Did I also mention I play Wilson Staff C200 irons? on your recommendation I might add although they feel old now
Love my ChipR.
Decathlon do a chipper that’s 35quid, similar to the Wilson but with grooves, might well give it a test
I have the Cleveland, it goes in and out of the bag based on course, amount of bump and runs I need to hit.
Using the Inesis chipper at the moment £35, great around the greens
i use the Slazenger one, £14.99 , works for me
Makes me want to go and demo a chipper now
I picked up all three of the Cleveland smart sole wedges after a video you and Matt did on them.
Well done mark 👏 👍
My wife's mates all have chippers, so we had to get her one, obvs went cheap so I got the Wilson for her, its a cheat stick, she's a demon!
I carry a 56 cleveland & 60 cleveland but my go to is the Odessy 37 chipper. I can take a putting stroke from as far a 50 yards and right up to the fringe of the green. Eliminates the chunks and low thin shots.
I fancy the Cleveland chipper but they never seem to be in stock anywhere
Thanks guys
I suck at bump and runs (distance control). So can't imagine being any better with a chipper. I'll stick with PW, 52, 58 wedges.
Use what helps you folks. I do. My group I play with poke fun at my collection of weird in the bag and it does not bother me.
Great from tricky lays..Missed par 3 green .Chipper out to 3 foot
..walked off with a par👍
Mock the Wilson, it works great for me! My mates can't believe how close i get the ball to the pin with it😂
bring on the 50 yard challenge!
Guys, ball and hand position when setting up..?
What about hybrid vs. Chipper?
i recently got one myself (orlimar). definitely easier to control shots with that, than having to navigate turf control.
No square strike ?
I wondered too. Started using a Square Strike a few weeks ago and I am looking forward to giving it a serious chance to stay in in my bag. So far I'm really pleased with it.
Interesting that in a top 5 video you could only find 4 - is there not a Taylormade carbon twist face chipper you could have included? 😂 On a serious note, I was fitted for a TSr driver in September and casually asked if Titleist were likely to bring out a chipper - the fitter could barely carry on for laughing, so there is still a bit of snobbery with some manufacturers!
You should have gt a slazenger to compare, they're fantastic for £15
I wanted the cleveland to fit my bag but couldn't find one in stock anywhere.
Would definitely get the Cleveland if I can find on win the wild again.
i love my Cleveland
Lol
Do u think having a putter grip on the chipper would be advantageous coz the stroke is so similar? Maybe a superstore or something similar. 🤔
@@gordonwood1594 is that a R&A rule?
@@gordonwood1594 very true. The Bryson jumbo grips are almost the same as a 3.0 superstroke grip.
What about the mazel?
Ping chipper is the best but has no enough loft and being heavy hits very flat balls. It is the best from 30 + meters out. The next model should be with a loft of about 50 degrees. I can see that the "global warming" finally hit UK!
Whats the Ping Chipper like in rough around the green?
The Wilson Chipper is 36° Mark
Cleveland and Ping are no doubt the lookers of the bunch. Clubs should look like clubs. Of course, it’s all about that personal comfort level. That Wilson looks like it got caught committing a crime. LOL. Is that even a chipper? No grooves and no shame… It’s like a date that’s actively trying to get you to hate them.
What would you take out of the bag to put a chipper in?
Dog on the Wilson but performance was as good as the others. 🧐. At a fraction of the cost.
It sure you actually watched the points on that club. Haha.
Come on guys lets see what the Wilson will do further out.
