    Thanks Matthew. I had read many ways to reset that were what you were saying but your video made it so clear and easy. After I watched your video I had it done within two minutes. The key was when you showed how to use the *. None of the other written instructions had said that you had to remember where it was to press. I kept trying to open the fax again and press and it wasn't working. So thanks for your clear instructions.

    Hey Matthew - thanks very much for this. Helped me reset my MFC9335CDW. Still printing strong blacks and needed this to make sure I maximised the cartridge and saved the environment a bit of junk!

    This worked beautifully!
    The first time, it was easy. No issues. The second time I had to power the printer off and then turn on again because when I opened the front cover, it did not display "close cover" message. I learned that, that "close cover" message must be displayed in order for the invisible asterisk button to work and take you to the "Reset Menu".
    Bravo, Matthew! Thank you!

    • @matthewjeschke
      @matthewjeschke  8 лет назад

      +Melissa Theide ah yes, I've had this trouble, you have to have the cover open to reset the toner... in which case the astrix is not visible... so make's it a tad tricky.

    Matthew - I was searching how to replace the toner on my Brother MFC 9130CW printer and found your video. I was concerned that after I replaced the toner, how to make the printer know it was full again. I saw the videos about resetting the gear and when I saw your post, I tried it. It worked. Now when I refill the cartridge, I do not have to worry about the gear. Thanks so much.......

    THANK YOU Matthew. After about 700 pages my MFC-9330CDW showed black "toner low" - but no loss of density and no streaking. It stopped printing completely due to this error message! Your brilliantly demo'd procedure fixed the problem and I'm back in business without spending a cent. THANKS FOR SHARING!
    Tip: use the corner of a sticky (Post-it) note to identify where the asterisk button is on the keypad when not backlit.

      Yea I thought of that too... at least they make it easy, a lot of Inkjet printers have a chip inside that counts the pages and the ink cartridge was still half full when it says it's "empty" and it requires some firmware level hacks to disable (or changing the chip, or using cartridge with read only chips).

    Mathew, I used your method about 8 months ago when one of my colors indicated low. I have still not changed the toners. You have saved me a shitload of money already. I cannot believe the software makes you replace the cartridges while they are still full. What a con!!!!! You are a legend.

    I have a Brother HL-3480CDW and tried this method and it worked perfectly. Something that may help is to mark with a pencil the exact location of the * while it is visible so it will be easier to find the exact location after opening the lid. Also, I found on my 3480CDW that I could reset all 4 cartridges before shutting the lid. Just wait after selecting the cartridge and clicking 'yes' to reset until it says accepted; then select the next cartridge and repeat the process for the other 3 cartridges. Then shut the lid and all four cartridges will be reset. Saves time having to go through the recycling and holding the * key again for each cartridge.
    A REAL BIG THANK YOU TO MATTHEW !!!!! Couldn't have done this without his video.

    In my case I went to replace a low yellow cartridge, got distracted and accidently installed in the magenta slot, which I had replaced the day before. I quickly realized what I had done and installed the yellow in it's proper place. Well the printer can be very unforgiving as it kept telling me to replace the yellow cartridge even though it had a brand new yellow cartridge. After uninstalling and reinstalling several times to no avail I found your video. It worked perfectly. Thank you so much!

    I can confirm that this works for the Brother MFC-L8850CDW because I just did it. It did not work the first couple of tries and then I did the following and it worked immediately.
    Steps
    1. Turn off by pulling out the power cable at the back
    2. Wait 15 secs and plug power cable back in
    3. If any messages come up to replace the toner, press X
    4. Put tape on the * (asterisk) so you know where it is
    5. Open the front cover and immediately press on the *
    6. If the "please wait" screen is displayed, it won't work, start from step 1
    7. If the "front cover is open" or "close the front cover" screen comes up, this should work
    I hope this helps you. Good luck.

    Doesn't damage a thing when low. Make sure when you change your toner carts, simply clean up the machine as well, and the drums. Keep a printer clean, keep it working. Vacuum it out, use a small particular filter so you don't blow toner around the house, or simply do it all outside. There are plenty of videos online about cleaning and maintaining toner carts and printers.

    It's great that this can be done with this Brother printer. Using a Toner Cartridge until it is ACTUALLY empty is more sustainable than changing it just because a micro-controller says it's empty.

    • @matthewjeschke
      @matthewjeschke  8 лет назад

      Sounds like a plan. Yeah I think it'd almost be better if we could buy quality printers that don't do this to us. Ones that cost more up front but are easier to reload, cheaper on ink, and work without all these restrictions / hacks.

    • @adysayswakeupffs
      @adysayswakeupffs 8 лет назад +1

      +Matthew Jeschke It's one of the biggest legal cons going, Matthew. Printers sold cheaply and programmed to waste ink in 'head cleaning' and fail to function, not only in mono printing but also in scan only mode , just because the colour ink is low. So, you're forced to buy more ink just to use the scan function but most of that ink ends up in a catchment sponge at the base of the printer! Saw this with my Kodak all-in-one. It was soaked in unused ink! I gave the damn thing away in the end and bought this Brother model. I'm so glad that it's use of toner and programming, that allows you to continue to use a cartridge until it is ACTUALLY empty, is far more ethical and sustainable than other, if not EVERY other, makes of printer. I'd recommend it to anyone, despite once saying that 'I'd never buy a printer from a company that makes sewing machines!'. I've since gladly recanted on that statement. It's an awesome printer.

Aside form this (common practice) I've LOVED my printer thus far. I've actually hacked and reloaded cartridges several times :) This little printer is like a tank :)

      +Matthew Jeschke hi sorry if u have already covered this where is the best place to get Ink to reload cartridge?

    • @matthewjeschke
      @matthewjeschke  8 лет назад

      I don't believe I have. I order off amazon. You can SOMETIMES successfully reload toner one time. Then the hopper starts to wear out. You unscrew the side of the cartridge opposite the gears. There's a small plug there. You can pour the toner into. Last time I ordered this toner amzn.to/1GRTOTH it worked fine. Your first 10-20 prints will be garbage. and FYI this is one of those do at your own risk. You likely won't hurt the printer but may end up getting no results and having to buy new cartridges anyways. If so these cartridges are AWESOME and affordable, amzn.to/1GRTTGJ FYI ~ these are affiliate links so thanks for the coffee money. You're welcome to also shop them out on your own. Hope that helps :)

    Thanks so much man, worked perfectly on the MFC8850CDW. I won't ever change a cartridge again unless it looks bad on the paper, these messages are worthless!

    This is brilliant, I hate to think how much has been wasted, and how many printers have been thrown out and replaced all because of a bug to stop people using non genuine toner.

    • @matthewjeschke
      @matthewjeschke  8 месяцев назад

      Yeah isn't it crazy that they do this. I think they expect to recoup / make their money off toner more than the printer itself. I'd honestly rather pay more for a printer that doesn't do stuff like this.

    Awesome! Thanks so much Matthew. I did it on our MFC-9140CDN and it worked a charm.
    I suspect that besides a page count, it also has a timer programmed too, as we really don't do that much printing (I estimate we've printed 250-300 pages max. since purchasing around 14 months ago) and we got the low toner warning.
    And I really don't like how these printers will just not print when the toner is supposedly low. It's a rort.

      A lot of printer manufacturers do stuff like this, include a helpful ink/toner level gauge that of course "expires" and all that... inkjets are especially bad because they're basically made to be disposable. Like a chip with each cartridge that tells the printer how much ink it's in it and refuse to print when certain condition is met. Oftentimes firmware level hacks or read only chips have to be used to bypass them.
      And of course they run out long before it ever does because you know, that's how they make money with cartridges that cost more than printers themselves. But at the same time I suspect the reason they do this is because a lot of these print heads relies on the ink to keep them cool, and when inks run out, the head burns up and fails to work at all.
      But with color laser you are already spending a ton of money on the product... they're not as disposable as the inkjets. Then you have these Epson L series of printers that takes inks in bottles (like those large format printers) that costs a lot more than their cartridge printers. But their inks are cheaper.

    Here is a finer point:(at least on the 9330series ) when you open the printer cover, you must NOT click the X
    that lights up as the warning to close the printer cover appears. If you do that, keeping the * pressed will not do a thing.
    The video show the steps correctly, but it is too easy pr4ess the X, without even thinking about it.

      Another thing I should have mentioned. Even if your prints are starting to streak, sometimes you can shake the toner cartridge and it will work again :)

    Aug 2018 - Awesome! Confirmed it works for Brother HL-3180CDW. Good thing too since I had a previous model that died just after I replaced the cartridges with regular size versions (so more capacity than the starter cartridges). At the Cartridge prices, that black one alone was 1/3 or the cost of the printer.

    this is fantastic thank u so much! I only usually want to invest in black toner (because theyre all so expensive) since I only need to print black and white documents, but somehow the 'replace toner' message stops me from printing anything in black and white despite having a full black toner level..... THANK U!

    Worked for me!! Thanks a million dude. Took me a bit to get it right; I needed to lift the whole lid, not just the first stage lid. I also used a little bit of white out to mark the unlit button, which helped.

      +Alexis Ali C Parkhurst Finally had to replace my cartridges about a month ago, and today my cyan decided it was empty. All the others still show as full so I'm guessing it's an issue with the generic toner cartridges rather than actually empty. Just used the reset again and so far so good. Thank you again for this video! You've saved me hundreds of dollars!
