How long can it live in water? For however long you want it to. The key is removing all soil and keeping them clean. You may notice when you initially make the switch, you’ll lose some of the old soil roots (they may get soft and mushy) and your plant may lose leaves as well. Chances are you’ll develop some new and white water roots. For my plants in water I use dynagro foliage pro liquid fertilizer once a month and replace water once a week or as I see water needs to be replaced. Any additional questions that you have, leave them down below and if you found this helpful, follow along for all more planty tips along the way.
I'm not completely familiar with the product but based on the name, I'd assume it's for plants that are composed of only leaves, stems/vines, and of course roots. Flowering/fruiting plants have different needs than foliage only plants (usually more nitrogen). With any plant, do an online search to learn it's fertilizer needs (which can vary based on the stage of growth it's in) and use a fertilizer with numbers that are at least close to what is suggested in your online search. I try to research any new plant or seed (needs, maintenance, etc) prior to buying it. This way, I can grab anything else I may not have... or decide it's too much for my budget/lifestyle/space. Hope this helps!
krystal, i found your channel about a year ago, right when i became homeless and moved into my first place alone. it was great at first and then got really tough. but my love and knowledge of plants grew exponentially when i started watching you so even at the worst times, i had my jungle surrounding me, and your joyous presence to drown out my sorrows. i’ve lost a few but even when i couldn’t take care of myself and was bed bound for weeks at a time i still got up to care for my plants (and my gecko Tofu). you helped bring a lot of happiness into my life at a really hard time. today is another hard day. i lost a good friend and you’ve just popped back up on my feed. i’m going to go water my plants and look at new baby leaves. thank you for being you❤
You just shared one of the most honest comments I’ve ever read. I’m happy for you for creating a home you L🩷VE & your plants can thrive. So sorry about the loss of your friend. My grandma gave me her red maranta when it was starting to go downhill and she didn’t know what to do with it. I let it continue to deplete slowly until there was almost no hope left. I planted the last remaining pieces in my “fishtank garden” which is just a fish tank that I put all my random props and high humidity plants in. The maranta has been growing in the fishtank for 2 years! Every time I see it I am amazed that it’s still with me. Never coming out of the fishtank tho lol.
I knew marantas could live in water. Everyone told me it would die, but i kept it in there for about a year and only potted it because i had 3 others of the same type and was running out of space so i gave it to a friend. It's nice to know it wasn't a fluke!
could you do one with the opposite > getting plants that have been growing in water for months back to soil - will they need moist soil to get used to the new conditions? thank you
Yes they will need to stay moist for a few weeks! Water roots are different from soil roots so it needs time to acclimate and grow the right kind of roots. But it's usually pretty easy, I water propagate a lot of my cuttings and transfer to soil, pretty much the same thing! I usually keep moist for 2 weeks and then let it slowly dry out, then find a regular water schedule that works for that type.
I have done it 3x....all i did was put it in bottle of water and put it in the window and let it do what it do. Was so proud when the roots grew. I did not rush to plant it. They are now doing so well. 😊
Thanks for another fun, informative video!! You are my plant/gardening go-to green thumb guru. I have learned SO much from you. Any time I have a question I go to your channel first to find the answer. I think I’ve saved virtually every video I’ve watched (wish I could save Shorts but instead I “Share” with myself). 🤓 I was doing some repotting etc. on the w/e and my partner came out to help…he was asking about watering one and I told him to “drown that hoe” and shuckled…he didn’t get the reference (even though I’ve made him watch some of your videos) and thought I’d lost it. Lol Speaking of original quotes/sayings…I shared a pic of a cpl of my plants with my sis and she said that I’d become quite a horticulturalist to which I responded “better to be a horticulturalist than a ho”. Lol. I thought of you immediately! ❤ from 🇨🇦
I've been drowning them hoes for weeks now, and shimmying dat s'ch'oil too thanks to her videos lol. My prop station has gone from 3 plants, to about 20 since finding her channel haha. I've learned so much from her, she's awesome and she shares so many wonderful tips and tricks with us!
Do you have any tips for being a plant parent in a flat? Keeping repotting a relatively tidy affair? I love your videos and your positivity. You’re the reason my flat is like a jungle 💜
I’m a messy plant enthusiast too!! I find potting/repotting using a boot tray (I use the same one as Krystal uses from IKEA) but still usually make a mess. If the plant (pot and/or planter) is small enough, I find using a dishpan (basin) is the easiest clean up). You can find them fairly inexpensive at Dollarama (in Canada) or Walmart and probably even cheaper at Dollar Tree if you have one close. If space is an issue, look for a collapsible one. Good luck!
Go to the dollar tree and get one of those rubber boot trays that have raised edges, and also a small garden shovel to put soil in pots. The soil will be contained to the tray and you can dump it back into your container or outside if it’s not able to be reused 😊
accept some mess, get a mat like others have mention, sometimes I lay down an old bed sheet under so I can discard the excess soil back I'm my soil bin, outside, or the trash.
Little handheld dust buster style vacuums will literally change your life. I use mine ALL the time and they're like $30 or $40 on Amazon. You can easily vacuum every crumb and don't have to worry about wiping or sweeping a bunch of dirt up, especially if it falls in weird spots
I put a shower curtain from the Dollar tree under a dishpan (again From the dollar tree) the dishpan holds my potting soil and the shower curtain catches all the Overflow
I put maranta cuttings in water and they love it. Nice roots, new leaves. I plan to keep them in water. They seem thirsty like peace lilies, can never get enough. Nice ASMR!
Ya know since I've gotten into plants I've been really curious about hydroponic growing. I want to order some Lotus seeds and try doing that first and then try some other stuff after that!
I've been trying hydroponics with my monstera deliciosa, I tried it as a way to get some good roots to repot it, but I don't think she's been liking it too much after these past few months, wouldn't recommend it for monsteras, but it works wonders for other plants 🤩
This is so helpful! My beloved rhap tetrasperma was struggling so i chopped-2 propagating in perlite are slooooooowly growing roots and no new foliage. The one in water has both growing like crazy! I was going to transfer to soul but now maybe not??
There’s something VERY important that doesn’t get mentioned enough. Do NOT do this to recently acquired plants. It’s too many changes for the plant to deal with and it goes into transplant shock. I killed several plants mere days after putting them in water because of this. Give it a month to get comfortable in your home and then change it to water.
I have to say I LOVE your channel! My plant thumb is so black I kill a plant by looking at it! Lol, I still love watching you take care of your plants.
I just got those coconut hanging planters to repot my fluffy ruffles that haven't been repotted for 5 years. Sorry I wasn't thinking! The Roots look Brown some of them break off very easily summer really tough and there's a whole bunch of dry Roots wrapped around the top of the root ball. Just curious if I should try to remove all the soil before repotting or or not mess with the root ball very much. I can't tell which roots are dead and which aren't they're all brown the ones around the top are very hard they look dried out but the rich below in the dirt are brown as well some are sturdy some come off the root ball very easily. The soil (if not well draining) will hold on to the moisture, while not allowing any airflow. This can cause the roots to rot out from "poor circulation" The water alone has enough oxygen in the total volume to keep the plant happy.
